I'm just learning how to use the Sierra Style dialog... But I'm having trouble swaping the potrait so it's located on the right side of the screen instead of the left. I know it has something to do with game.swap_portrait, unfortunatley I don't know how to use this command! Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance!

Inkoddi: Wow. Those are awesome! Nice sprites!

Big Brother: I thought it was a children's book when I first read it. I need to read it again though, now that I'd actually pay attention and read to understand it.

Raven Gray: It was intentional that spelt it TABLE of Altheria in the title... It's also intentional that I'm now editing the fist post to make it read TABLET...  ;)

Sweet!! That's great. I was thinking, that one pic you've already done would be perfect for a dialog picture. I've been toying around with the idea of using dialog pictures in my game as I don't really like the Lucasarts style of text. So, if I PM you with some sprites of characters from my game, would you be able to whip up so more pictures in that style?

Oh an Big Brother: Le Petit Prince is an excellent book. I read it back in Grade 5 (In French!).

This is EXACTLY the kind of style I'm looking for!! Hey Evil... Want to do some drawings for my game?

P.S, how's the colouring job?

Nicely done Inkoddi! At this rate, I'll need to open a fan art section on my webpage!!  :o

Mmmm, me likes. It's got a nice style and feel to it... There's just a few small crits I have...

Number one (THE MOST IMPORTANT), is that the light doesn't look good. As easy as using the lighting feature in Photoshop is, it looks A KAZILLION times better when the light is drawn yourself (IE: Draw shadows...).

Also, the scene may be a BIT too dark. I don't know how it would look filling up the whole screen, but alot of people have dark monitors, and they might not see the dropoff of the cliff on the left there (Which might mean instant death depending on how the game is coded)...

All in all though, a GREAT background so far!

Yeah, there's a couple games I would switch around in those catagories...

Flashbax would be a medium game (IMO... It only took me about a half an hour to finish), whereas 5 Days a Stranger would be full (As it took me 2 days to finish)...

But that's just me.

Eggie... Wow... that's brilliant.

That's going on the webpage once I eventually get it done!

...BUMP!

I'm still hoping to get at least one submission for this... I'd really like to get some nice artwork into my game.

Dude man, nice sprite! That looks alot cooler, and more of a fun character to play!

I wasn't really trying to come up with a character design, I was trying to emulate the look of Sierra's old sprites, which I think you should do with the new design!

I present to you... My 10 minute attempt at recreating the Sierra-style sprite. the only thing ripped from an actually Sierra game is the head, but I changed the hair on that too.

My take on the Quest for Infamy villain...

Everyone here is making very valid points. When I started working with sprites a little over a year ago, I couldn't do ANYTHING! But now, I find myself to be a good sprite artist. I'm even hard at work doing all the graphics for my game, and alot of people like the art.

So it's not a dead end. IT IS POSSIBLE to become better and great at art, even if you can't draw a single thing right now. Look at everything you see like you were going to draw it. Think of how you could draw certain things. Soon you'll begin to develop your brain to get better and better at drawing things.

The pathway to great art is in your brain, it's just filled with high grass. You've got to traverse it a few times to stomp it down into a road  ;)

I just hope the King's Quest IX team was able to recruit Josh Mandel to reprise his role as King Graham...

DG: The release date for my demo is the 24th (Of this month). If I actually stay true to my word and actually make my release date, will it be eligible for the Demo AGS award?

Sounds like an excellent idea, I hope you can pull it off. I checked out the page, and first of all, the backgrounds I've got to crit a bit on.

The first two are mostly amazing. Mostly, because they are 90% Sierra made, ripped from King's Quest 5 and 6. The other looks like a bit was ripped too, but is also a bit original. Unfortunatley, the original stuff clashes with the fipped stuff, making for an unpretty picture.

First of all, I don't really like the first one. The whole piano thing sounds too, crazy and random, plus the drums are very random, and the whole thing seems too crazy and repititive to actually add something to a scene.

The second one is much better IMO, though still needs a tiny bit of work. For example, it needs a clear time signature. I dn't know if you know what a time signature is, so I'll try to explain it to you:

A time signature is the thing that tells you how many beats are in a bar of music. For example, most music you hear on the radio today is in 4/4 time. This means that there are 4 beats in the bar. Listen to a song, and if you're in any way musical, try tapping your foot to the song. Most likely, you'll be taping your foot on every beat, making four taps per bar.

Take this peice I'm workin on for my game for example... Tap your foot to it. Now try saying "One-Two-Three-Four" on the different beats of the bars. Get it? This song is in 4/4 time. It doesn't stray from that at all.

Is this making sense? *Hopes and continues*

Some songs have different time signatures... A waltz for example, is in 3/4 time. Try taping your foot (or dancing) to a waltz. You'll hopefully be taping "One-Two-Three, One-Two-Three". Three beats in a bar.

Now that THAT'S over, on to your song... The second one is hard to place the time signature, it seems to jump all over the place. Normally in songs, chords change at the end (Or sometimes if your CRAAAZY, in the middle) of a bar.

I tried to figure out the time signature for your song... It sounded like this to me:

One bar of 6/6 time, then a bar of 4/4, then another bar of 6/6, then a bar of 2/4... Then I stopped. Needless to say, if you want the music to be background music, and not to have the player's full attention on the music, you'll want something pleasing to the ear, and not jumping all over the place.

That's just my opinion, being a jazz musician and all. Hope this didn't fly over your head!

Another n00bish question from the most annoying n00b on the planet!  ;D

This is best described with an example...

Roger finds himself inside a blank room. On the floor is a triangle shape and a square shape, which he picks up. Now there's a door to get out of the room, but it's locked. Beside the door is a triangle-shaped hole. By using the triangle shape on the hole, the door is unlocked.

How do I make it so only using the triangle, and not the square, will open the door?

In other words, how to I make a puzzle solvable by using a specific inventory item on a specific place?

Thanks in advance!

Wanderlady: No. The purpose os the light source is to semi-hide a character on the right of the screen, so it won't sway in the game, though that's a good idea.

As you may or may not know... I'm working on a game entitled "The Tablet of Altheria" (More info on it here)  Anyway, I'm looking for an artist to help with the title screen of the game (And perhaps dialog pictures and/or cutscenes, but not as of yet). I would prefer a sortof anime style art, but it doesn't need to be. Artist also doesn't need to colour their drawings, since I'll be able to do that myself. Full credit will be issued in the credits to the game, along with a copy of the game before it is released. If you're interested, and would like to try out, please draw a quick sketch of the main character (sprite below) and post it in this topic. Thanks in advance!
