For NPCs who do not have a speech portrait, I like to use "DisplayTopBar" to show their name with dialogue.  Instead of having to write out that longer command every time, and for better integration into Speech Center... could we have a property added to Characters that would let you select if their text is displayed normally or with a top bar?  It'd be so much easier - I've run into a big problem with a project right now with this, and trying to integrate speech.

In one of our games, we wrote a simple custom speech command for NPCs without dialogue portraits using the DisplayTopBar command.  It looks like this

Code: ags
function TopBar60(this Character*, String WrittenText)
{
  Game.NormalFont = eFontSpeech;
  DisplayTopBar(60, this.SpeechColor, 16, this.Name, WrittenText);
  Game.NormalFont = eFontNormal;
}

Which works nicely, because you can just call the character name, and what they say easily

Code: ags
cRoberto.TopBar60("I'm saying this here sentence.");

as opposed to always having to type

Code: ags
DisplayTopBar(60, 15,16, "Roberto", "I'm saying this here sentence.");

It uses the color set in the character properties for the display window color, etc.  Nice.  Only problem is now I'm trying to add voices.... annnnddd, there's really no way to numbers these or use speechcenter.  I'm kind of stumped here.

Any ideas?

Hey guys! I meant to post this here earlier, but it's been kind of busy.

We've made a little one-room demo game for the TV series "Stranger Things" on Netflix.  It's basically just a little demo to explore, but if you're a fan of the show, you'll probably have fun with it! It's available for free on itch.io - link provided below.

Hope you have fun with it, thanks to many in the AGS community for always being so clever, supportive and awesome.

Quest For Infamy is now available at Steam, GoG, Desura and Humble!

Inspired by classic Sierra and LucasArts games we all love, Quest For Infamy is a Role Playing Adventure Game set in the Valley of Krasna, an idyllic place... or so it would seem!  Over 200 backgrounds, and more NPCs than I care to admit... it's a giant sized adventure!

Check it out sometime, eh?

Hey, quick question - hoping someone has an answer.  I'm probably overlooking something, but I need the collective knowledge base here.

Why aren't my portraits showing up as alpha blended sprites? The edges are not blending the way I expected them to.  They're imported correctly, and when displayed as an object, they alpha blend - why don't portraits?

I'm sure this has been asked before.  In fact, I know it has - I looked it up, and found some threads (6-9 years old!) about it, but I wanted to ask again here, because I'm sure you fine people know how to do this properly.

I have a background that has multiple hills in the background - how would I program my ego walking down the hill, behind it, and reappearing in the "distance" on the hill behind that?  I know there's multiple ways to do this, but I wanted to see what the best way to accomplish this might be.

Hello there!  Infamous Quests is looking for artists and animator who want to work on QUEST FOR INFAMY, our first commercial project.

BACKGROUND ARTIST

We're working at the classic retro res. of 320x240.  You can create your art in any size, but for in-game use, it'll be sized to 320x240.  Must provide examples and/or references.   Must be able to paint in the style of our game.  To view screenshots or play our demo to get a feel for it, visit www.questforinfamy.com

DECEMBER 30th, 2011 - After more than five years of working on the game, bit by bit in their spare time, the team at INFAMOUS ADVENTURES (www.infamous-adventures.com) has released their remake of the 1987 classic, "SPACE QUEST II: Vohaul's Revenge".  Originally written and programmed by Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe and released by Sierra On-Line, the game features the hapless hero, janitor Roger Wilco in a rollicking adventure that takes him through space!

Remade in a classic retro "VGA" style, like Sierra's later point and click adventures from the early 1990's, Space Quest II Remake provides hand-drawn backgrounds, hand animated characters, a full voice pack featuring over 4,000 recorded lines and a whole lot of extras and fun.  A labor of love and devotion to the original series, the team at Infamous Adventures is proud to be able to release this to the fans, both young and old.  Visit www.infamous-adventures for more details.

So what are you waiting for?

Special Thanks to all the team members involved in putting this together.  So many people came together over the past five years to make this, and they were all amazing.  I had a lot of fun working with them, and making this game.

Hey there!

I know I talked about being on dialysis and needing a kidney transplant in some other threads, so I thought I'd drop this note here.

Last Friday, I got a phone call saying they had a kidney for me!  I went up to the hospital, had some blood drawn - they admitted me and at 3:30 AM, I had a kidney transplant!

The new organ is working well; I'm home already, walking, talking and enjoy a dialysis-free life.  I have to take an immense cocktail of anti-rejection drugs for the rest of my life, but it's better than four hours on a machine every day!

Thanks to all who supported me on this.

Hey there, guys.

I've been working on this background for a game of mine.  I like the basic idea I've got here, but it seems a bit empty to me.  I think it needs some more "widget-ry" to Sci-Fi it up a bit.  I'd also like the extreme foreground (which is black now, as you see) to be a bit more machine like and interesting.

Does anyone have any ideas and suggestions?

I'd appreciate some fresh eyes on this.

So, last week I was at a local bar for a friend's birthday.  Amdist the beer and conversation, I began talking with my friend's co-worker.  We got to talking about what we did and I mentioned that I'd been making a game.

I tried to explain what I was doing...

"Well, we're remaking an old Sierra game.  Ever heard of King's Quest III?"

"Yeah!  I had that when I was a kid."

"Yeah, well - we're remaking it in the style of the later King's Quest games..."

"Oh, like V and VI?"

"Yeah, totally."

"You using AGS?"

I cracked up.  It's not often in my life that I get asked that!  Turns out the guy new exactly what I was using, and who I was by my net-handle (Blackthorne.)  Trust me, it's weird when a complete stranger says "Oh, wow... you're Blackthorne?  I visit your site."

Anyone else have experiences like this?

Hello!

I have a room (640x200) that I'd like to have scroll in a unique way; basically, I want it to appear as two 320x200 rooms - it scroll OVER to the other half of the screen when EGO reaches a certain point (ie the x=319).  Is this possible?

General Discussion / My Salty Vernacular

Hey hey,

  It has just come to my attention that some of my dirtier language around here has upset a few people.  For that, I apologize - it's how I express myself at times, and no one had ever taken the time to PM me and talk about it, until a MOD did.  Now, I'm gonna quote something here.

Quote9. If you have a problem with someone, send them an instant message and tell them to stop whatever it is that's causing your lack-of-sleep. If the problem persists, see a moderator or Chris Jones.

That's from the forum rules.  Please, if something I do offends you - PM me first, don't go running to a Moderator.  I don't like it when I feel I cannot confront and talk to somone who takes offence.  I'll be reasonable, but I'd like the opportunity to speak for myself.

Hey folks.

Okay, so what I'm trying to create here is a background in lo-res, 320x200 - a desert scene, much in the vein of later Sierra backgrounds.

I made this test screen to guide me; I know it looks like shit.  I just want a few pointers in the right direction.

I want it to have a western US desert feel to it, like Arizona's deserts - ala the Catci.  These colors I know are way to warm... but I also want the cracked ground look.   If anyone has any suggestions and paintovers, I welcome them please.  I'd really like to try to lick this one.

So, have at it - please!

Okay, here's a 320x200 256 color-style background I made recently.

It feels kinda of empty to me, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what might be able to be done.

This area is a cliff overlooking the sea behind a building.

Thanks!
