Well, I agree with you there, CaesarCub.
You can see similar things on Kickstarter, with someone giving a super vague idea and then expect people to pour them money.

Some tips on how to make classic characters *really good* :

The protagonist always has an incredibly boring life before the adventure starts, and what better way to tell this than to slowly crawl through his everyday routine as slowly and tedious as possible until the audience is even more bored than the hero?
And he should whine a lot about being meant for greater things, but only until the adventure starts. Then he should whine a lot about how awful it is to be a hero and how he just wants to be a normal boy.
You don't actually have to show the protagonist doing good things, just have everyone tell him how awesome he is. And there is no such thing as a Gary Stu.

The strong female character is really good at fighting, so the male hero will look even more awesome when he has to rescue her towards the end of the story.
She should scream things like "I hate corsets" or "I don't wanna wear a dress!". Real strong female characters only like to wear practical combat gear, such as chain-mail bikinis or stiletto heels.
You don't actually need to show her being capable of fighting, just have her swing a sword at nothing in particular and say "I don't need a man. I can take care of myself." in a pointlessly rude tone.

The wise wizard/ Scientist should always look like Gandalf or Albert Einstein. They are a great way to deliver exposition to the hero, and the best way to do it is for them to hold a very, very long unskippable non-interactive monologue about it, and to make it extra good, have them bumble and forget their words and repeat themselves a few times. Also, it doesn't really matter weather the setting is sci-fi or medieval fantasy, all lab-equipment looks the same, funny looking bottles with tubes in them that are full of what looks like assorted soft drinks. A good idea is to have them fizz and bubble on a repeated loop while the old man holds his very, very long unskippable non-interactive monologue to the hero.

A villain has no need for a motivation other than Evil. If you want to be really fancy, have them be mad with power and want to take over the world/kingdom.
And there is no need whatsoever for the villain to have a well-defined or consistent plan, just have them do whatever is necessary to move the plot along.
There is no need to show them doing or saying anything remotely evil, wearing dark clothes and living in a Gothic castle is enough for the audience to want them dead.
And don't let the hero defeat them by the knowledge and powers the hero has acquired through the adventure when you can just use a Deus Ex Machina instead!

This discussion reminds me about something the author Kalle Lind wrote about Walt Disney...
"Walt Disney was great at making animated movies. Except that he didn't make the animations. And he took the stories from old fairytales. Basically, he put his signature on the movies, but he had someone else design the signature for him.
So I don't know what Walt Disney actually did, but he was good at it."

In my opinion, choosing good artists and writers and being a good leader of a team as well as acting as a vision-bearer can also be very valuable skills.
However, there is a difference between working hard to manage a group project and just look for others to do all the hard work for you.

Another thing that grinds my gears: People who insist licorice counts as candy.

Wow, the dark sure brings out a rather claustrophobic feel to it.
Looks good!

Now this really, really reminds me of the intro to mr Bean...

But I do think it looks rather nice otherwise, the cone of light does a good job of highlighting the door, man and ladder.
Maybe the walls could have a bit more going on, cracks, brickwork or similar, and the border between the middle wall and floor looks odd, but otherwise it looks good.

It's a third person game, and a fun one too.
I should know, I helped write it as well as some play-testing! :)

It's a great game... I played it last year...

Quite disturbing as well...
Emily Enough is probably one of my favorite games, not just favorite AGS game, but favorite game period. The protagonist does some pretty bad things, but it's done in a clever and well-written way.

He seems to be bound with rope from the knees up.
Yes, the movements look a bit weird, the character doesn't lift his legs when he walks.

"Sonic and friends: Club-House"

Who will be your favorite character? (laugh)
I recognize Sonic, Tails and Luigi well enough, but who's the one in orange? :)

Thank you so much for your votes, I'm so happy!!! ;-D

And congrats to Jack and Grok too!

Hi everybody!
I thought that it would be fun to experiment with adding FMV cut-scenes to my next AGS-project,
but I have no experience making 2D videos and want to hear if anyone has any can recommend
any program for creating FMVs that is easy to learn for beginners. Any tips?

An alcoholic divorced war veteran with a daughter, who I assume he never gets to see.
How close was I?
Spot on! ;-D
I know it's a bit of a cliche, but I wanted to test myself and see how much I could tell through a picture alone.

I agree with Creamy, the title doesn't make me think of detectives much at all.

Anyway, might as well give this a go, here is my take on a detectives office:

I thought it would be fun to give this detective a back-story, can anyone figure it out based on the room?
#1898
I'd think that when you have such lovely and detailed backgrounds it would be a shame to scale them down.
Is it not possible to maybe use some form of anti-aliasing or blur effect to smooth out the characters instead?
It's also hard to tell from a still image alone, but if you managed to get used to the difference in resolution,
chances are that players might too.

I guess this is one of the reasons why triple-A game companies are focused so much on multiplayer games, with a lame single-player campaign mode tacked on (or not):

You can't play the game unless logged in with a unique account.
Yes, I think Diablo 3 and Sim City was the worst offenders in that regard, since they needed constant internet connection for a Singel-player game. You have to be logged in in order to play alone, and you can't play if their servers break down.(wrong)
Are they actively trying to make players just give up and pirate the games instead just to avoid dealing with all anti-piracy stuff?

which would allow bereaved families of the 9/11 attacks to sue saudi officials for their involvement and support in the attacks.
Just... how?
What?
You can't just sue government officials in another country!

That would be like the Jewish suing Germany over World War 2.

America has a real fascination with suing everyone, don't they?
Haven't they heard that saying about rocks and glass houses?
Imagine if other countries would sue American Government for well, pretty much any of the wars they've been involved with the last decades, or american companies for ruining local businesses and unions.

And the whole war against piracy just feels so wrong, especially since it's screwed things up for so many people who haven't even broken any laws, and many anti-piracy measures in movies and video games have been either laughably ineffektive at best, or even taken away the product the consumer already paid for at worst.
