Huh? Why would FL not be usable as "standalone" program? I don't quite get that part. Don't know about Reason, but FL can be used and comes with more than enough generators/filters/fx etc. to compose and program a complete song with good sounding instruments. Without plug-ins or anything.

Sure, to echo Nikolas, it depends on what kind of sound you're hoping to attain. Reason and FL are both great for simple loops, riffs and effects, etc (and obviously, Reason grows exponentially more powerful with extra ReFill patches), however, often, a program like Cubase is often necessary to enhance the composition process tenfold by enabling you to splice a file and put it back together again (a la Talk Talk's later, more ambient work), record instruments that are not keyboards or other such MIDI surfaces, and heck, even use a parametric EQ.

Allow me to rephrase, then... Reason and FruityLoops respectively are often not viable for complete score composition unless your will is to create tracks which conform to the programs' respective restrictions, or unless working with full recording suites is not to your liking. :)

A suggestion (also a reference to my earlier post)... Propellerhead's Reason 3, together with its various plugins, is very difficult to beat as a composition and production program if one is to use MIDI surfaces as input devices.
Depends on the style of music one does.

Generally cubase, Sonar, Logic, Pro tools are more oriented to orchestral music, and "film composers" (game composers as well), while Reason and Fruity loops is more oriented to loop based music, although I've heard amazing stuff from both programs.

Still I find Reason lacking greatly for my own personal needs and what I do.

Yep, oh granted, Reason and FruityLoops generally can't be used as standalone programs.

I'm a blues singer. A rubbish one, but a blues singer nonetheless...

I have it. Listening to it now. Totally speechless.

A suggestion (also a reference to my earlier post)... Propellerhead's Reason 3, together with its various plugins, is very difficult to beat as a composition and production program if one is to use MIDI surfaces as input devices.

The use of that, in conjunction with a powerful mixing and production suite like Steinberg's Cubase 3 or the latest version of Adobe Audition, really ups your chances of producing professional, studio-quality sound for your game.

-- Suggestion: electric guitarists - if you're going to record, my tried and tested best method is to sling a mic over the amp (most decent mics will work, since a guitar's frequency range will generally be captured effectively by anything from a Samson Q7 live mic to a Shure condenser); route said mic through a PA system and line out the PA into the computer. I strongly recommend against lining an amplifier out directly into your computer, as this will cause freq clips and will also produce a less true sound than the former method. Just a tidbit of info intended to help the six-stringers among us. --

EDIT

Here's a short piano riff loop I made entirely in Reason, using sampled sounds exclusively from the program's two sound banks.

...Simple Piano Riff Loop...

You are most welcome to use it in any of your games, gratis, if you deem it worthy... only please tell me before you do so I can get a good play in when your completed game's online. ;)

Heya!

Wow, point taken about the number of sprites. That's pretty extreme. Not sure if AA requires 32 bit colour. I seem to recall its having worked for me in 16 bit before. Lastly, I haven't used the latest version of AGS yet, but from what I recall, there's no edge blending; AGS antialiasing works to get rid of jaggies within the scaled sprites - that's the consolation!

It's still visually appealing without AA so if antialiasing is not the foremost issue during the latter part of the production phase, ignore me. :)

Surprised nobody seems to use Reason. Great suite!

This is fantastic, only some of us third-worlders don't have forty quid to spare! Download it is, then.

(That said, Radiohead's probably my favourite band ever.)

Hey! Looking very nice. Just a suggestion... have you thought about perhaps working on the sprites in a larger format, then scaling them down with antialiasing set to true within the actual game? Will make characters and objects blend much more smoothly with the background's look.

Can't wait to play this! :)

Hello.

My name is Ben. If you've not worked this out by now, you may want to consult your psychiatrist.
I live in South Africa and am a twenty-year-old full-time graphic design student... as well as a full-time web designer. This makes my life slightly awkward. I began a game about two years ago and shamelessly plugged it within the work in progress forum, however, that project swiftly fell through due to work pressure and general sloth (which is one of the seven of which I am most guilty).

In my spare time, I write the odd song, occasionally play in the world's stupidest band (a post-Dada project if you will), do a lot of music promotion, design and criticism, sing, draw, party, attempt to play my guitar, pontificate, spam people's inboxes with viagra emails, save damsels in distress from certain death at the hands of the government, drink tea and take long, romantic walks on the beach - which is of course a complete lie, but always sounds good in context.

So there you go, all about me, not that anyone asked. Either way you're all welcome to a slice of my headspace should you desire it (cue pull on Bolshevik cigarette).

Ooh... aah... just to gratify your curiosity (if such a thing exists), here's a link to a screenshot of the game I couldn't bring myself to start, let alone finish...

AGS: Get your game on!

May seem early. I was actually a member here years ago under a different alias. But, the way things go, my game found a way to fall through whilst in its early stages of development. So here I am, all dèrelicte like and playing in the Death Rangers last Halloween. I'm the moron wearing the shades. The other moron is supposed to play guitar, but has difficulties sometimes.

That's hysterical! Would love to see about 100 more lines of dialogue and perhaps a stray kitchen utensil in future releases!
