Just like Selmiak mentioned, AGS can use alpha values on the GUIs, so there should be no problem.

Well, only the text border needs this, any other GUI will require a tailored image for the borders.
I was planning to do the slicing of the border myself, once we have the winner.

Now a days it's pretty much the same.
The engine settings allows you to use the current Desktop Resolution and scale the game to the max round multiplier, so you can have your own custom resolution, so there is no risk of compatibility issues with a weird resolution.

That said, for a true 320x200 native resolution stretched to a 4:3 screen ratio, the pixels will be 1.2:1 or 6:5. So if you want the game to have non-square pixels and zero distortion, you would need to work with a resolution higher than 640x480.

Personally I aim to the widescreen standard of 16:9, which with a 320x180 resolution gets a pixel perfect image (x6 reaches 1920x1080 and x4 goes to 1280x720), but when I do this I aim more for a retro-feeling than a true retro experience.

Hello peeps.

It's time for the GUI Elements contest for the Sierra Template.

As you can see, this menu could really use some pizzazz and style.

Here is a list of what we need:


  • A button:

    • Normal Button State.
    • Pressed Button State.
    • Hover Button State (Optional).
  • A custom slider.
  • A border for the GUIs.
  • A border for the Display text.

Here is a visual aide with the walk icon, the current palette, a text window, a button and a slider to help as a reference:

Things to take into account:

  • You can add a couple more colours to the palette if you need them, but be thoughtful about them working together.
  • The final resolution of the template is 320x200
  • Be creative with the borders of the buttons and the windows, but be mindful of the space they take on a screen that size.
  • Remember that the display text border repeats itself to reach a variable size, so overtly complex borders on that one will not really work.
  • The sliders don't have to be horizontal, they can also be vertical.
  • I might change the icon borders to reflect the style winning here, so there is no need to use them as guides.

The deadline for entries will be on September the 4th.

Buttons, borders, sliders... I'll start the contest later today or tomorrow.

I thought about doing that, but in the end I decided to use the Background Blitz voting system. If we ever do a high-res version of the template, I'll just do the pick top three used in the sprite jam style of voting for the contests.

Go to "General Settings"
In the Visual section look for "When player interface is disabled, GUI should" and change it from "Grey out all their controls" to whatever you prefer.

You can select to hide the GUI elements or to leave them as they are.

I bet it's just regular MS Paint with a new name, but the exact same logo and function. Like Microsoft Edge.

It does this weird thing where you can rotate the 2d canvas and shove 3d stuff to it. I have no idea who the intended user is.

@CaesarCub - Did you only recolor the walking animations or also the rest of it? If not, I'd gladly recolor them and throw in some additional animations (reach for example).

I did a quick palette swap on all the walking animations, so I have it in blue.
But if you guys want to go for auburn Roger, just send it to me and I'll replace it.

How is this evil? If the dialogue is blocking, it makes the most sense to put the text here, because it's where there is no art.
Then again, having non-blocking dialogue with a dialogue box, now that sounds evil XD

I don't mind the text box, I would move it to the top of the screen, or... if the dialogue blocks the game, just cover the whole verb UI and place the text there?
That way you reuse that space that is not showing the really nice art, and that can't be clicked during the conversation.
