Why the resolution choice?

Since your work seems to be largely freehand and very stylistic, wouldnt a higher resolution show off your art a  little better?

It seems like you are taking high resolution images and shrinking them down.

Ask yourself what negative consequences could arise from being complacent about a possible threat.

It is better to be vigilant than blasé.

In 1989 the 200 metre 4581 Asclepius passed by the earth by about 700,000 km.

Now obviously you're thinking thats no problem since its along way away.

To put it into perspective thats where the earth was only 6 hours previously.

Yes, space is big. Yes, the earth is small but it only takes one of the thousand or so NEA which could be catastrophic (above 1km in size) to hit us and millions of people could die.

It seems ludicrous to dismiss such a threat on the assumption that its so unlikely it doesn't matter.

To me this is the same as Ron Paul's stance on Swine Flu.

"They made some fuss about a supposed 'pandemic' in the 70s and no one died, therefore we should ignore all pandemics as media hype"

I occasionally blog about game development.

I'd be happy to write the occasional article if you'd like.

Par example: http://www.thethoughtradar.com/blog/?p=125
et (not game related but an example of my writing) : http://www.thethoughtradar.com/blog/?p=96

late 90's Mini Cooper does me well ;)

Both of those will cost you a fair bit on petrol, but that's not always a problem. Passat is probably better for a run around, depends how far you plan on driving each day.

My girlfriend has a 1990 mini cooper :p

Its adorable.

Not everything need to advance gaming. An original adventure games that stick to the tried and true formula of Monkey Island 1 without deviating by one iota does not advance gaming any more than a remake do, yet nobody complains about that.

but arent games art? shouldnt they explore the ever stretching depths of the human soul.. n stuff? The story can be used as much as the game mechanics to 'advance gaming'. To explore new topics and so on.

There's still decisions involved in a remake. New interfaces need to be implemented, puzzles need to be adapted, backgrounds designed for 30 pixel high character need to be adapted to for 70 pixel high character, more details absent from the original game can be added, whole new atmospheres can be created, adding more text, creating musics for games that were generally completly silent... Dualnames probably spend tons of sleepless nights when designing his H2G2 remake.

thats a fair point. Though i give the H2G2 remake a lot more credance since it was a text adventure. That seems more valid to me than remaking a low-res graphical adventure into another low res graphical adventure.

I guess the point of my thoughts was not WHY make a remake.. but rather why is that PREFERABLE to making something original.

To me, most of your reasons for doing a remake can be just as easily applied to making something original, plus you get the advantage of having something you made from scratch.

As for asteroids and the recent fear mongering mega-craze, all I can say is you should petition NASA to build a giant cowboy robot with a lasso so he can ride the asteroid safely towards the sun, a futuristic Dr. Strangelove if you will.

Thats the spirit!

Also humans will never have to face pandemics, earthquakes, volcanoes or global warming! Let's just ignore them and save a little money. Let the human race deal with it later. oh, they can't? tough shit.. i saved 10$ on my tax bill.

Unfortunately i'm only 23 with 0 no-claims bonus and thus if i tried to insure a 2.8 V6 they would laugh at me :p

I'm thinking I will probably get the Passat on account of the fact i get more for my money.

but the BMW is awfully tempting as the obviously better car.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / On remakes.

I've noticed that there are quite a few high profile projects on here that use other peoples IPs.

I was curious why people even want to make a game using someone else's characters and/or plot and what do those people feel they are bringing to the medium.

I mean we have the Maniac Mansion game, a remake of that and then another remake in a different style. Is it really necessary? How does that advance gaming?

Now, I dont begrudge the people who remake games or make the latest Indiana Jones game and I'm sure then end up being very enjoyable but I don't understand the appeal from a designer's perspective. Isn't making the story and the world the best part of game design?

Also it seems that remakes attract some of the best artists and talent. Why is this? Surely artists of all people would rather create something original?

Thoughts?

"Oh, there appears to be an exclamation mark nestled within that word, but that's not a letter! What a curious predicament I find myself in!"

lol.. I mean just lol.

If you're gonna swear just go for it. Shit, bollocks, arse.

General Discussion / A new car.

I hate to bring the forum down to the level of discussing cars but...

I've decided to sell my old car and get a different one but i cant choose.

Ive narrowed it down to a BMW 3 series or a VW Passat.

any thoughts?

If we want to be pendantic about it, 2D character sprites are ALWAYS out of perspective unless they are stood in the exact centre of the screen at camera height.. and even then technically only 1 pixel of that sprite is in perspective.
#3254
I get the same problem as the other guys except it freezes at "ive been thinking about us alot too" on the balcony.
#3255
The second level includes more layers of parallaxing than the first one and a bigger sprite size.

on my machine the 2nd level clocks in at about 30%cpu usage with the effect and about 4% without it :p

so on the final release i will just add a switch to turn it off if needed.

but the game runs full speed on a P4 2.8ghz so it shouldnt be too much of a problem for most people.
#3256
Nah, im still waiting for the final few animations but Mordalles is like some kind of animation making machine and i have all the voice acting now so i expect a version ready for beta testing by the end of the week i would think.
#3257
Im going to need Beta Testers within a week probably.

Anyone care to volunteer?

The fact of the matter is that statistically we are overdue for a big asteroid strike.

Also we  actually monitor very little of the skies for asteroids.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that a large asteroid hits the earth within our life time.

Saying its unlikely to happen is like playing russian roulette. Its true that we will probably not have to deal with it but the consequences of not preparing are too great to ignore and its not the kind of thing we could rustle up a solution for on short notice.. we need a plan in place and an alternative human base is a good plan.
