As far as im aware the Ipod doesn't *need* any drivers. It's essentially just a portable hard drive and so falls under the general spec.

However to make it work as an ipod it requires the Ipod Service to be all running and working.

You need to install iTunes first. The Ipod service is required to recognise the ipod

What about support for third party plugins?

Will they easily port since they are just windows DLLs?

Also I'd be happy to send you the source to McCarthy if you'd like it.

He shouldn't have accepted it, now he'll never win one legitimately. He'll always be 'the guy who got an award for being black'

Plenty of black people have won nobel prizes.

The Nobel peace prize has often been a little wishy washy. Its more about promoting attitudes than actually 'doing something'

If you read the committees raitionale it seems fairly sensible. He has promoted diplomacy and free exchange of ideas.. sounds like peace to me.

The Iraq war is an unfortunate blemish...

I decided my screen shots were criminally out of date so i've updated them

Check the OP

While i do like the way that module looks, the character is always on top of the particles.. which looks very odd for rain.

It does have an overlay feature but then transparancy isnt supported.

I dont think he was referencing telephone style speech.

Wav files have several settings from yeeeears ago and the lowest one is 'telephone'

For the interested the reason the lower bitrates give you a lower frequency range is due to the sampling rate.
To store a wave of a specific frequency you need a sampling rate of at least double that frequency, Since digital sound is just a series of samples.. you can't have a wave inside of a single sample, you need at the very least 2.

So the telephone setting has about an 8khz sample rate so therefore it can only reproduce frequencies up to 4khz.. so it sounds like a telephone.

Thats why the magic number for cds is 44.1khz.. Humans can hear up to about 20khz.. and then they added a bit for ultrasonic info.

Although the letter 'H' isn't considered a vowel, the rule for "a" vs. "an" is entirely pronunciation-based. You wouldn't, for example, say, "I waited a hour..." You would say, "I waited an hour..."

The letter 'H' is pronounced as Terran displayed, such as "aitch" (<ref>). The name of the letter is not prefixed with an 'H' sound. You don't pronounce the letter 'F' as "feff". It's pronounced "eff".

"an HBO movie" is therefore correct.

Thats because 'hour' has a silent h. It isnt pronounced.

Happy, Hill, Hex, Ham and Help all have a 'huh' sound. and the letter 'H' is pronounced 'haitch'

Thus its A HBO film. not an

It seems the best way to do it is to start the rain at the very start of the game so its always falling and then alter the transparancey of it. Not sure if this makes much of a difference resource wise.

Modules, Plugins & Tools / Rain Plugin

Ive been playing around with the rain plugin and when a room loads the rain always starts to fall after the screen is loaded and so it always looks like its just started to rain.

Is there anyway of making the rain already coming down before the screen fades in?

1) You have to number the lines first, Or use the Auto-Numbering thingy
2) I would say OGG, simply because its an open format. There doesnt seem to be a great difference in the size of the files and the quality is pretty much the same.. OGG might even be a little better.
Make sure you bounce them down as Mono though.. no point in stereo information in a voice really.. unless you have quite complex reverbs involved.

an HBO movie (an aitch)

Do we drop our 'haitchs' now, Mr Rich?

A HBO movie.

H is often considered to be a vowel in many languages (most notably french since h is not pronounced and always precedes a vowel). However, English is not one of them.

Ubuntu is faster, more robust and less prone to infections than Windows so why would you want to use Windows as the main platform?

While that is all true, Windows has greater support for multimedia. Specifically Cubase.

Windows also has greater support for gaming.

As much as I love linux as a development platform it still cant cut it from a multimedia and gaming standpoint.

EDIT: Virtual Box does look cool... i might have a go when i get home from work.

General Discussion / andLinux.org?
Tue 06/10/2009 09:48:09
I was looking into the idea of VMs since i like linux but sometimes it annoys me to switch between the OSs and i found andLinux.

The idea being that its a kind of wrapper for linux apps which allows them to run on windows machine. Like wine in reverse. Now ofcourse there is quite a performance penalty (about half it seems) but the ability to be able to natively run things like bluefish seems quite appealing.

Anyone had any experience with this?

#3377
well thats taken the wind out of my sails. I didnt realise there wasnt a central system which plays the samples.

I still think replacing the sound system with OpenAL would be a blast. It would essentially give AGS a more fully funtional sound system. You could define the environment, multiple different sources and have reverb and stuff.

I dont think we should underestimate the power of good sound in a game (says the sound engineer...)
#3378
Well if you access the stream directly you access them AFTER decoding and edit them on a sample basis in the actual stream itself
#3379
The way i see it, it COULD be implemented using as plugin.

Allegro can be used to process reverb effects. Either through Impulses and convolution or just a delay line.

A delay line is almost trivial to introduce. Just repeat the sample in a stream with diminishing volume.

Alternatively a DSP system (like this http://wiki.allegro.cc/index.php?title=Echo_effect) could be introduced.. after that the actual addition of effects is just a matter of adding the algorithms.

Ha ha to be honest I mightve taken the time off work anyway... but at least now i have something to work on besides getting drunk.
