of course, we brits are lucky that our country is so small. This means that we all know the people on TV personally, and can go down the pub and tell them they suck. This way, only people with no friends (and thus no-one around them to tell them they suck) ever get on TV. And have you never noticed that friendless people are always the most entertaining? Well I sure have!

General Discussion / Re:AGS banner

Maybe we should change the banner annually?
Like, each time we have the awards, fling together a new banner showing all the winners? Or would it be too crowded?

a game based of the films of Lynch? That ought to be interesting... in an un-playable sort of way...
#226
I (as always) would be interested in going. The only problem for me would be the money...

hey Phil! Don't forget I snapped up the rights to do a cross-over game where LV aquires a talking bum-end and meets (and marries) RL.
Just because I've not done it yet doesn't mean I've forgotten about it!

also: I love the cartoon, but couldn't you put some zany voices on to distnguish between the characters?

General Discussion / AGS banner
Tue 23/12/2003 12:53:06
I was just looking at the banner and wondering if it was time yet to re-do it. Bring it up to date, and give some OTHER games a little free advertising...

I guess it'd be a lot of work though...  :-\

I've only ever successfully colaborated once, very recently (having been milling around for coming to to quite a few years now...) But I used to get involved in projects all over the place!

What I think made this possible was that I didn't poke my head in around these parts (well... around the EZboard) until after I'd finished my first game (RL&BAT). I think it'll help you to get into teams when you've got at least SOMETHING to show people, so they can see what you're skills are, and thus where you'd fit into their teams. It's really VERY important that you have a crack at making something by yourself before you can reasonably expect people to let you join their projects. Let alone take a controlling creative role in a team!

These days of course, it's somewhat harder to just "have a go", as Graphical Scripts have been taken out of AGS, so people with no programming skills (like you, and like I was when I started) will have to work signifigantly harder to get their heads round a lot of the most asic concepts. But there is at least now a much broader support base for you, to help you et started.

As such: Have a go! You really REALLY will be able to make something! If your story's good, people will like it. And it's entirly possible to make a pretty good game without even TOUCHING the horrible faux C++  scripts.. if you try...

It might help to boost your confidence if you have a look at some of the games that other newbies have made. When I got started, Rob Blank had just come out (the first one) and everyone was saying "WOW!!! THIS IS AMAZING!!"
I played it and thought "Well, I can CERTAINLY do better htan THIS!" And was motivated to draw a blu-skinned transvestite. Then Rob Blanc 2 came out, and left my game looking somewhat less impressive, but shhhhhhh...

In the end, Yahtzee even comented to me that RL&BAT had inspired (to a degree) the events-not-happening-in-the-right-order buisness from Rob Blanc 3, and I was ever so proud!

YOU CAN DO IT!

Me and my gay lover (or "Rob" as I sometimes call him) got stuck in a generosity competition this year. I ended up getting him a load of kitcheny stuff in chrome, a pair of cuff-links, the new kylie album and a large cuddly gorilla. This just about left me around £40 more generous than him, so I won. "HA HA HA IN YOUR FACE LOSER BOY!" I didn't say.

I got my mum "Death and the Penguine" and my dad some comic book.

My brother and sister are getting virtual reality games. Sam's getting the ninja one, and Emma's getting the driving one.

Advanced Technical Forum / the time

is it possible to pluck the time from a computer's clock in an AGS game? This would be nice from the perspective of making a game that reacted differently at different times of the day/week/month etc...

hurrah!
#234
oooh... is "After" heading full tilt into dissapointment town?!?!? I guess we'll know soon enough!

Maybe whoever put RL&BAT on the games page should change the link so that it points at the windows version instead of whever it's pointing at the moment? Does anyone remember who it was?

Did 3D come first, or lense flare?
Why hop from foot to foot over the desire for 3D when there's so many stages in between to look for... I'd like to see layered backgrounds that scroll at different speeds, and I'd like to see the lighting feature developed further.

I can't see any reason why an engine specfically designed for retro-style game creation needs to try and compete with such things as the appauling Monkey Island 4 and friends...
#236
I've now (basically) fixed this. When you FIREST play, it'll have an error message, but it'll go away and never come back (unless your naughty...)

Sorry about all that folks...
#237
I didn't add RL&BAT top the games page, and always wondered who put it in medium when Rode Kill & Larry Vales (don't get me wrong, great games both) get to be full length games... but I don't really mind. I think everyone who's going to play it has played it by now.
#238
yeah... someone else pointed this out to me already... if you delete agssave.030 in the VPET directory, it should be ok...

Sorry folks, I'm working on fixing this!!!

I'm worried that the music won't line up very well on other folk's machines (it's the kind of area where AGS would let me down if it thought it was funny).

Could anyone confirm that it DOES line up on their machine? If at least ONE person is getting the full effect I'll be happy... ish...

There was a documentry on recently where this ginger guy was saying how he'd been dowloading porn since he was 7! I have to say, I'd be surprised if there was anyone younger than that on the forums...
