Recruitment / Troll Song - Translations
Mon 17/03/2014 15:37:28
I'm looking for translators - especially into German, Spanish and Russian - who are willing to help (at a later date, probably 6-9 months from now) to translate Troll Song.  Basically, what I'm looking for now is:

- PM from those interested so that I can contact them later
- A rough idea of how much it would cost

Troll Song is projected to be a medium sized commercial release, though it's not going to be particularly dialogue-heavy since... well, it's trolls.  (There will be some dialogues and other characters, but the dialogues will generally be pretty short.)

UPDATE - Looks like we've found our artist! ;-D

UPDATE - Okay, even if your art style is completely different please get in touch.  I don't want this project to die!

You may possibly remember Troll Song (see DEMO, which Knoodn and myself were making.  Unfortunately it's come to a bit of a full stop because Knoodn just doesn't have the time to continue with it.  Now I (think) I've got an artist lined up to take over, and I already have the game design / story for "Verse One" largely mapped out, but the real problem is the art.  Tino created a lovely art style that suits the game down to the ground, and I'm loathe to have to change the style.

So here's what I'm looking for - someone who wants to help and is capable of replicating the existing art style (or reasonably close - there is after all only one location so far, albeit a rather large one), for which a paintover could be done if needed.  I'm not artist so I really don't know how difficult it is to replicate a style, but my guess would be that it's pretty difficult!

Troll Song is Freeware and I don't have plans to change this, although the possibility of binding all the resultant episodes together into one game featuring extra content, and releasing THAT as a commercial project, does exist.

If anyone would like to help out with Background Art, Character Art or Character Animation, that would be fantastic (one person who could do all 3 would be amazing, but I realise that may be asking too much!).  Please PM me if you're interested or have any questions.  The game has received a lot of love on GameJolt and I'd really like to find a way of moving the project forwards again.  We already have 2 great musicians (Viking and KingSeamus), several voice actors, and Clod is ready to ROAR once again - with your help!

17th Feb 2014:
Just an update - Dualnames has agreed to help on the programming side, surely the prospect of working with such an illustrious personage is enough to make more artists interested in working on this? ;)

Theo was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule and working on episode 2 of The Journey Down to do an interview for me.  Thanks Theo!

(I also - finally - posted my review of The Journey Down: Episode One - Over the Edge.  [In a word... shiny!)

... so I eventually decided that I didn't want to be the only game blogger on the surface of this planet not to have reviewed Dave Gilbert.

Reality-on-the-Norm / RON Crossovers?
Sat 07/12/2013 14:32:37
Just an idle thought... I had the germ of an idea in my mind for a game in which Captain Disaster crash-lands on RON.  Would it be sacrilege to introduce a character from another series into a RON game?

We have 1,741 games in the database (unless someone snuck another one in when I wasn't looking ) - 841 of those have received less than 5 ratings, so don't have any overall ratings.  Let's try to do something about this!

Check the NOT VERY RATED list, pick one or more games, play them and give them a rating.  Let's try to give more developers feedback on how much we liked their games! (nod)

Come on, you know you want to...

Maybe it just doesn't matter - I mean, you do pretty much get used to whatever interface you're using at the time - I even learned to live with that horrible verb coin in The Curse of Monkey Island... but:

Our dev team can't seem to agree on this.  Whilst I know a lot of games use the Right Mouse Button = Interact, LMB=Look, to me that has always felt the wrong way round - I MUCH prefer LMB=Interact, RMB=Look.

Does anyone else have a preference?  Do you actually care which way round it is?  I can't exactly explain why I favour one method so strongly over the other, but my mind will never accept RMB=Interact as being "right".

Now on Steam!

** UPDATE 19th May 2016 - TALKIE VERSION NOW AVAILABLE!! **

** UPDATE 7th December 2017 - now also available on Itch.io!

Hernald and CaptainD proudly present:

Captain Disaster in: "The Dark Side of the Moon"!

When CD sleepwalks through an open StarGate, he not only gets stranded on a distant, abandoned moon, but unearths a diabolic plan of The Maestro - a plan which, unfortunately, The Maestro's normal arch-nemesis The Dentist is powerless to foil!

- Featuring state of the art awful graphics!
- Excellent music, including two brilliant original compositions by our very own Viking
- Puzzles galore, some simple, some pretty darned devious...
- 16 Achievements to obtain - including attempting to defeat evil with pudding and inadvertently destroying the universe!
- Thoroughly beta testing by Arjon StrayDogStrut and LostTrainDude - so blame them for any bugs you still manage to find  ;)

You CAN largely complete the game without LOOKing at anything (Left mouse button for INTERACT, right mouse button for LOOK) - but you will miss out on a lot of the game's storyline and humour if you do.

Using Direct3D rather then DirectDraw heartily recommended.  Unless you want the small character sprite to look like a blob.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Achievements
Thu 08/08/2013 15:46:25
If you're playing an adventure game in particular and it has achievements - do they make you feel more inclined to play the game again after you've completed it?  Do they make ANY difference to your gameplay experience?

Just interested in people's opinions on this.  I've got one game coming out soon with achievements, another that I'm considering adding them... trying to think whether it made me play games again after completing them, but apart from briefly re-visiting Da New Guys, I can't really think of an instance where it mattered much to me.  (Although thinking about it, some of the achievements in The Critter Chronicles were quite fun.)

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Face Noir

Anyone else playing this?  REALLY enjoying it so far (despite a couple of continuity issues) - love the noir atmosphere, music, voicing, puzzles aren't amazing but reasonable (and I'm only near the start), good interface, some neat features like lock-picking, combining clues to create new ones, etc.  Beautiful graphics and art direction.  If it continues to be this good it is going to be an excellent game.
#114
Just curious (I do have ulterior motives but you'll probably only find those out much later!) - what games / parts of games do you feel did a really good job of creating suspense and tension?  Could be in terms of gameplay mechanics, puzzles, storyline, characters or whatever.  What made specific scenes in certain games suspenseful to you?

Seeing this on most if not all games right now...

Not wishing to make the jobs of those organising this even more arduous than it already must be, but...

What if we had separate awards for Best Commercial AGS Game and Best Freeware AGS Game?

With an increasing number of games going commercial, it seems fitting that we would consider splitting the prestigious Best Game award into two.  (Yeah I know The Journey Down won it as a freeware game... but still!)
#117
I did a little research and as far as I can tell, only 2 of the previous 10 winners of the Best Demo award actually went on to have the full game released (Tale of Two Kingdoms and The Marionette - both excellent games).  The only one I know for sure is still in production is Alan_Drake's Wretcher.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew if the other games are actually still in development - Larry Vales 3, Revenants, Byzantine, Valis, Dust to Water, Frantic Franko, Matt to the Future?

(I also did a quick post about this here.)

Recruitment / Racing Team Manager game
Thu 21/03/2013 13:03:22
If anyone is interested in making a racing team manager game, please PM me.  Basically I'm coming up with a detailed design document for this and looking for an experienced programmer who:

  • Has an interest in motor racing (not obsessive, but at some interest!)
  • Is a good planner and happy with lots of variables floating around
  • Has enough free time to both program the game and work with me on the design document (partly to make the actual programming part easier)

I'm planning a game that's relatively detailed but not to the extent that it would be 1/ very difficult to make or 2/ off-putting for casual racing fans.

Anyway, if anyone has the skills and would be interested in working with me on this, send me a message.  I have no issue with it not being made with AGS btw (though obviously AGS should be well capable of such a game).

Just wondered if anyone had any good data (their own or other) of the correlation between the number of demo downloads and actual game sales for indie adventure games?  I know this is likely to vary quite dramatically but I would be interested anyway if someone does have some data they were willing to share.
