From WinSetUp, I think it you're using Direct Draw it will show lower-res figures appropriate to the backgrounds, but if you use Direct 3D it will scale the sprites at the resolution of the current game resolution.  At least this seemed to be the case with one of my games. 

Was his wife trying to kill someone but didn't realise who he was?
Was the man himself disguised in any way?
Does his wife do something which unintentionally results in his death?

This is going to give people beautifully drawn nightmares!!

Was his wife disguised as someone else when he tried to give her the chocolates?

(I have the oddest feeling that this case is from an episode of Columbo!!)

It's the weirdest thing... that sprite reminds me so much of Ocean Spirit Dennis!!!

Pacman was running around a maze, eating pills, and presumably went the wrong way. Blinky, Pinky, Inky or Clyde touched him.

Sort of remember that kind of comic book style in the intro to Beneath A Steel Sky?  (But looks too high res for that.)
