Is the "gun" some form of medical device?

Is it an ordinary handgun? 

Did someone else deliberately put something in his gun?

So far my theory is... he shot the gun, perhaps messing around knowing (thinking) it was empty, but inside the chamber and thus released by firing was some king of toxic fume that he eventually died from inhaling / some kind of small pellet that didn't in itself cause major damage, but broke the skin and introduced a toxic substance into the body, thus eventually killing him.

Did he die from the contents of the gun piercing his brain?
Did he die from some kind of toxin?

Did the gun contain something which is not usually found in guns?

Was someone else in Bob's office at any time between him leaving and coworkers entering it?

Did Bob deliberately incriminate himself?

Did the victim phone his office number prior to being murdered so that the events would be recorded?
