The Painted Veil?

Wow this is difficult to judge... great entries!

Idea: Kastchey - seemed the most original use of the idea
Atmosphere: Kasandar - shades of Munch here!
Design: Kastchey - really liked the way this screen was designed.
Composition: Miez - the eye is wonderfully drawn from the foreground elements to the temple then up to the moon(s?)
Functionality: Lasca - a close one, but I think Lasca's would be most readily usable in a game
Technique: Kastchey - brilliant use of colour and lighting

Thanks all for your reply, especially Paul with your actual stats - very useful to know!

Obviously a good demo has a better chance of success so hopefully since CD has had a very good reception overall that's a good sign.

Recruitment / Racing Team Manager game
Thu 21/03/2013 13:03:22
If anyone is interested in making a racing team manager game, please PM me.  Basically I'm coming up with a detailed design document for this and looking for an experienced programmer who:

  • Has an interest in motor racing (not obsessive, but at some interest!)
  • Is a good planner and happy with lots of variables floating around
  • Has enough free time to both program the game and work with me on the design document (partly to make the actual programming part easier)

I'm planning a game that's relatively detailed but not to the extent that it would be 1/ very difficult to make or 2/ off-putting for casual racing fans.

Anyway, if anyone has the skills and would be interested in working with me on this, send me a message.  I have no issue with it not being made with AGS btw (though obviously AGS should be well capable of such a game).

It seems that I managed to forget the best penalty taker of all from my team - John Aldridge!  17 scored from 18.

I think VA has become largely expected in commercial indie titles, it's a nice bonus in freeware games.  But as already mentioned it needs to be done well if it's going to actually add to the game.  Just be aware (well, I'm sure you already are!) that adding VA will add a considerable number of weeks to your production time - months, depending on the amount of dialogue in your game, how reliable your voice cast are, and whether you add voicing for everything (not just dialogues).

Congrast on the award Nick!  :-D

Just wondered if anyone had any good data (their own or other) of the correlation between the number of demo downloads and actual game sales for indie adventure games?  I know this is likely to vary quite dramatically but I would be interested anyway if someone does have some data they were willing to share.

Radiant - yes, it would be a shame to have to get into the realms of people signing contracts before they agreed to work with each other.  However I think that as more and more AGS games are commercial projects than ever before, it may become a necessary evil. Any such contract should protect the interests of both the project and the individuals involved.

Still, while trust is good, it obviously has to work both ways - and good communication is vital.  People so often just go off the radar and then you're in limbo - can you use their stuff?  Have they given implied permission by leaving the project without telling you that you can't use it?

Whether it is done by a legally-binding contract or an informal agreement, I think one thing that needs to be clarified straight away is whether the individual is offering exclusive rights - with my musicians for Troll Song and Captain Disaster for instance, right from the start we agreed that any use was non-exclusive.  But even then there are questions to be answered about specific use, either in terms of the project or what the individual is going to do; I've been very fortunate so far in that all three musicians I've worked with have been good communicators and honest (as I hope I have been as project manager for these games).

Good advice.  International teams made up of people who have never (and in all likelihood will never) meet in person is fraught with danger.  (Not that meeting in person would necessarily prevent these issues from cropping up, but you know what I mean.)

Well, no feedback as such, other than they look good to me...

Chris Waddle, Gareth Southgate... oh no, wait...!  8-0

Well, probably Steven Gerard would be one of them.  John Barnes, Robbie Fowler...

Erm... okay, so I'll try to think of some non-LFC players for this...

Luthar Mattaus - Gianfranco Zolo - Decco - Ronald Koeman ...

Ah I don't know.  Too many to choose from, and I don't know about many from before the 80s in terms of their penalty-taking prowess...

Oops yeah, 2031.  But to be released in 2013?!?!?  ???

I like the way the first tune has got a bit of 60s spy thriller soundtrack about it!
#4636
It's not WHAM, unless he was wearing a really convincing face mask when I met him.  8-0

Congrats and kudos on the release!

Stupot+ - do you only want the pure backgrounds?  I was thinking of an in-game screenshot, not sure if you were thinking of a background without characters in.

I had a really tough time choosing between kconan and Chef!

In the end I plumped for Chef! due to his story having slightly superior atmosphere (though not having a line space between his paragraphs nearly turned me against him!  (wrong))

The quality of the entries overall was good, nice theme WHAM.

Why not use (with permission of course) screenshots from AGS games?  They might make good spot the difference pics.
