Nice, but I find having the HUD at the top of the screen rather than the bottom slightly weird.

We still need another skilled 2D animator to help with The Journey of Iesir.  PM Zyndicate if you're interested (or PM me if you like, but Daniel (Zyndicate) is our slave-driver  :o... er, Team Leader  ::) I mean).

Now we've got another coder on board, if we can get another animator the project will really start moving forward towards completion.  I know how many of you are looking forward to seeing the finished game, so if you know a good animator, threaten / blackmail / bribe them or whatever it takes!  :=

Now filled. :D

Thanks both for your suggestions, I'll try them out!  8)

General Discussion / Voice Recorder Software

Can anyone recommend a free sound recorder / editor?  I'm experimenting with a bit of voice acting but all I've got at the moment is the Sound Recorder package which comes with Windows, some editing tools & effects would be very useful.  I've done a quick search but not seen anything that looks good and easy to use so far, was wondering what other people used?

Might consider a commercial package as long as it's relatively inexpensive.

An interesting question - how many people actually play ags games (I mean especially the free ones)? Is it enough to actually have sense to make them, or is it more about creating something to you?

LOTS of people play AGS games... most new games that get at least a bit of exposure will get a few hundred downloads in the first week or two, and some games a get massive audience:

- A Tale of Two Kingdoms is nearly at 200K downloads (for example - not saying that all games reach that kind of figure by any means)
- I believe I remember Tierra (now AGDI) saying that their first King's Quest remake reached half a million downloads in the first 6 months (maybe less)

Ah, that guy's not really so bad...  ;D

Glad to see the game's nearing full release.

Ah, I forgot the Amiga 1200... should've realised!  ::)

Remember:
- Being old enough to have owned a 16-bit computer does not make you old
- Being old enough to have owned an 8-bit computer does not make you old
- Having owned a ZX81 when you were a kid does not make you old!

Just for fun, you should include a mini-game based on 3D Monster Maze!  ;D

Looking good!   ;D

I was just wondering if the robot's name referenced anything in particular - obviously "ZX" is the CPU range of the dear old Speccy, but does the 1200 refer to anything in particular?

Really nice game, the little comments your character makes when you try to do things were very good in particular.

Not sure if anyone's noticed, I think I found a bug:

Spoiler
After you've picked up the piece of cloth from the window, you can still see it, at least from inside
[close]

Also there appear to be no interactions for the stool the enchanter's glasses are on.

Niggles aside though, a lovely little game.  :D

But I'm a tea drinker!!!!  ::)

Interesting theme, will have to get my thinking cap on.

Are you planning on green screening real people into the world? Because that would definitely make it feel like an early 90s adventure game.

Hmm... that wasn't the plan, but you never know (I'm leaving all sprite design and animation to someone else, it's something I definitely couldn't do a good job on myself!!)

What you've always secretly wanted is a hatchling baby alien duck creature with a quiff, with added slime, right?

I wasn't quite sure if the bit under the flag was supposed to be daylight or background stone, but I've tried my best with this.  There are far better artists on the board than me, but I like to dabble from time to time!!

#5254
Great, I've been looking forward to this one.  ;D

For a daylight scene it needs a bit of yellow coming through, then highlight the colours of individual items - tree foliage & trunks, doors etc.  (I know - this from someone who has next to no graphical ability... :=)

Critics' Lounge / Retro-style backgrounds

Now I'm not looking for suggestions on improving these as such... basically my drawing ability is pretty limited, so I've developed a technique for turning photos into retro style backgrounds, with maybe some simple drawing to supplement / change things.  While I'm quite happy with some of the results, I don't really know if someone playing the games would be put off because they thought the backgrounds were awful!  So basically I'm asking, if you played an adventure game with background graphics like the images below (320x200), would they put you off playing?  Or would you actually like the backgrounds?

So overall...

Winners: Voh and Domithian both got 2 votes
[

Runners Up: Ponch and Atelier got a vote each

3rd: Oliwerko, who also wins the coveted Most Prolific Entrant award!

Thanks all for your entries!

Voh and Domithian will have to co-host the next one I guess?

Yes! :P

In which case...

Domithian

I was impressed by many of the entries, but Dom's entry just blew me away with it's emotional resonance.  Also it gave me the chance to say "emotional resonance", which (hopefully) makes me sound smarter than I really am.

Any more votes to come?  Atelier's stands at zero, as votes for yourself count as -1...  ;D

(Only kidding... but it would be nice if you did a proper vote!  8))

Another stupid question - if I set the competition, am I allowed to vote?!?  ???

Forgive me if I'm asking a stupid question, but is there voting involved? If so, when? :p

Not a stupid question at all!

Since the competition closed after 12th August, voting is now open.  Stupidly I am still awake long after midnight, so I can tell you this now instead of later.

Voting begins!
