Those rough shade sketches are just amazing! Honestly, I would play a game with those graphics! (nod)

Anyway, I just did my first rough sketch, just to get an idea of what am aiming at... or trying to anyway. View point I think needs to be lower.
I intent to do the BG using 3D in Blender, but I do enjoy hand drawing once in a while, since it does help me visualizing up what my mind is seeing to what I want to show. Unfortunately, is very rare that I can actually draw what my mind sees... I~m better at drawing what my eyes see (or at least I used to be (laugh) ).

Anyway, here for you to rip apart:

The Trader building is the "big" one in the middle, the tower I'm not sure, I  just felt I needed something high on that side of the picture, to balance the scene... and once I put the stalls in the picture, I lost a bit of the walking area and "south exit". (wtf)

EDIT 01 (10/06/2015, 00:05):

Original scan for sketch 1.

Original scan for sketch 2.

EDIT 02 (10/06/2015, 22:36):

Just posting my second 3D draft model. Am thinking this one works better than my 1st! (didn't post it, but if anyone wishes I can do that).
The Harbour Master's office building, still needs a lot of work, as the current shape looks odd - this happens when you have curves going of several opposite directions. I knew it would be tricky.
Still need to decide exactly where to add the opening with 3 steps to the lower docks level. Slicing the model to add it isn't much of a problem, but I can't later one just move it freely. Maybe some paint over the rendering picture will help, before I commit to it. ;)

Currently unsure if I need to scale the buildings up and/or place them further away. Maybe I should just add a human model to the scene, just so I have some references. (yes, I know there's currently too much light and too little contrast. The top of the wall is blending into the path bellow, atm.)....

Could it be Atlantis?
I seem to remember some flying ships on that game. Though, this screenshot seems to have poorer graphics... (roll)

Thanks for the feedback Snarky. (nod)
I'll see if I can do anything about it (assuming I guess right about what yo talking about) and post it on the critics lounge at a later time, for bashing. (laugh)

1a. I'd be interested in participating, provided the timing suits me: yes No particular timing, though avoiding my vacation in July would be nice, since I probably will do zero in those 2 weeks.

2a. The best time period for me would be: Not during my vacation in July. ;)

2b. The ideal duration of the activity for me would be: As long as there's a deadline, it's fine by me.

2c. On average, provided that the timing suits me, I would probably be able to spend this many hours peer week during it: Unfortunately I can't commit to "this many hours a week", since some days I'm more tired than others, some days I have less free time than others.

3a. I feel comfortable with the concept of composition when it comes to paintings: I like usefull critic, being it positive or negative, only way to improve really. But bot comfortable giving it, since I don' consider my self as a having the right "know how" and don't wish to give the wrong critic.
3b. I feel comfortable with the concept of values when it comes to paintings: See above.

3c. I feel comfortable working with thumbnails when it comes to paintings: Thumbnails? Errmm... No, didn't even knew someone did that for BGs...  :-[

3d. I feel comfortable giving critique in general regarding other's pieces: See 3a.

I'm skipping point 4, but if I can help in anyway, then I'm sure I will. Just love helping out! :-D

Try re-importing your sprite and make sure you choose "import with alpha channel".
If this is not the problem, then you need someone more knowledgeable than me. ;)

(And yes, if an individual is proven to have directly participated in war crimes, THEN we are talking of a completely different matter altogether. Lock 'em up, I say!)

You do realize that "war crime" is dependent of the POV? From the ISIS POV decapitating westerns and non-muslims is perfectly "a okay" if not not even an act of heroism. From our POV is barbaric and a war crime.
There isn't an easy solution to this problem.
The Resistence in WW2 was heroes to the Allies, and Criminals in Hitler's eyes. Had Hitler won, they would have been called terrorists and we would accept that as the ultimate truth.

They took a decision to go and fight for the ISIS, cause at some point they believed that to be the one true right. They went and fought. Now the real question is: Why do they return?
Is it cause they found out that they were fighting the "wrong truth" and ideal, and realized that they actually had it much better before? Or do they return, with the intention of "fighting evil from the inside"? Or they consider their fight as some sort of "summer camp"... it was fun but all fun has an end and now it's time to return home?
Beats me, honestly. How do you distinguish one from the other?

The "Sprite Editor" is just your external image editing program, you need to go to the settings and tell AGS what program to open when you double click the sprite.
I never use that, I just open my image program and make my sprites there, once they are finished, I save them and then import into AGS.
