Uhm, I grew up with parser and for me at least, I'm convinced it helped with my english. Even if the sentences you needed to write were a bit limited "open door", "take bag" (there was LOT to read and understand though)... but I do feel and consider they had a positive influence for my english. 

Though I was not technical a "kid" longer, but more like an "new" teen. Can't remember exactly when I got the pc and started playing them though (but probably 13 or 14).

Write the name of the GODS in the second room, using the symbols in the chamber.
For instance: Anubis
A = yellow bird
N = wave
U = orange bird
B = green boot
I = Rectangle with leg (mirror P)
S = P without the middle horizontal line

Go back to the first room and write the name of each of the 2 GODS by clicking the correct symbols (one letter by line)
Take the pink gem.

Maybe, if not too hard, you could use of the systems as default and then an option to change, for the old timers like us. 

Maybe you could try and draw the text on the lantern GUI? That way you wouldn't need a new GUI, though not sure that would work, since I haven't tried it and don't know if there's any special code that would interfere with the text being there.

Don't think your solution fits, it's been established that the other guy wasn't there to kill Barney and that he didn't meant to kill him.

Not at all. 

I don' play much much on handheld systems, but having to trace over what you're doing isn't very practical, since it blocks the view.

I can imagine that using a left or right corner with the controls like Mandle suggested, might work better. Since then one can hold the mobile and use the thumb to press the keys.
You can even add a setting for the player to decide between left or right handed (and even using both, for those that like using both thumbs).
