Right, i just got off the phone with Stan and he said that there's a clear winner here.

Progzmax! You created a brilliant sprite AND you read the rules! right on!

Thank you for all the other lovely entries, heh maybe DC will get in contact with Sierra...

Yeah i figured as much Kromagnon, it's hard to keep someone's identity when they're wearing a helmet. SpacePaw's sprite is okay with me as it is quite clearly a superhero, i was quite specific with the rules and expected one or two deviations.

Some brilliant entries so far, i'm loving Progz, Indie boy and cap'n Lex's entries. But people, please do try to follow the rules if you want to win!  :=

Verging on a paint-over there but i'll allow it  :=

Nice entries so far!

The Secret files games on DS are awesome, as is Professor Layton and the Broken Sword re-make is bloody amazing with some good few hours of extra gameplay added!

There are plenty of adventure games already on the DS, you've just got to look hard enough.

Hey hey hey,

Snarky pretty much hit the nail on the head with his posts, double pixels suck. Well i've used gimp before and decided to give it a go again which is going well so far.

And on another note i finally decided to get the Cintiq 12wx. After hours of calling independent retailers in the the UK (i wanted to try one out before i forked out £900) i gave in and decided to order online.

If you haven't seen them check out this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEI97_Ka-n4

On your sprite you've got mid-range and highlights but no shadow. If you were to add one extra colour such as a dark grey  (near black) you could add a lot more definition around the coat, neck, glasses and shoes.

Think about if you were lighting one of your friends for a photo, you would have a fill light (midtones) and a key light (highlights) and naturally some of the area's (under the arms, chin and glasses) would not be covered by either of the lights. You've done a great job with the high and mid colours but seeing as your drawing this image yourself you need to add in the area's where the light doesn't hit.

Hope that helps.

This looks great, point and click! I'm working on a low poly character model at the moment, how many poly's would be the max for good performance within DAGE?

And how big can the environments be? Is there are script for changing rooms?

SE looks awful, the white artifacts around the stuff they've pasted in is such a joke. I've bought tales but yet to play it. To think that these are most of the same guys who spent hours pushing pixels and writing timeless scripts to get the perfect game back in the 90's, goes to show how much the games industry has changed.

Hey hey!

Thanks for all the posts, i will check out all the programs recommended today and post my verdict tonight. For the record i use photoshop for all my higher res stuff but when it comes to a clean line tool MS Paint always wins.

Bootcamp is the best way forward but i was looking for something that i can easily tab to in OSX.

And seriously, there's nothing wrong with the mac. It's a superior operating system that takes a little getting used to but has loads of useful little features, and everything AGS runs perfectly with the help of crossover.

Keep 'em coming guys, great effort so far!

Sprite Jam | 15th July - 23rd July | Point and click super-heros

Everyone knows Stan Lee is a massive fan of Monkey Island and with the release of the fifth installment in the series it was only a matter of time before Marvel made the all important call to Lucas Arts regarding a low res point and click super-hero game. "But where will we get the artists!" cried Stan, well with all the fan game copy-write infringement coming from the AGS forums Lucas Arts knew just the people for the job.

Yes that means you! For this weeks sprite jam you need to take the role of character artists for Lucas Arts big new adventure game due for exclusive release on the Nintendo DS. You have been asked to create a Player character sprite of a classic Lucas Arts adventure game character dressed as their super-hero alter ego. The sprite needs to be suitable for the Nintendo DS's native resolution of 256 x 192 pixels.

To re-cap:

Sprite must be suitable for backgrounds sized at 256x192 pixels.

Sprite must be a unique image (no paintovers) of a classic Lucas Arts character dressed in a super-hero outfit.

Sprite can have no more than 30 colours.

Remember! With great power comes great responsibility.

Happy pixeling.

I'll put the next comp up within the hour.

Smell's like guitar hero.

Hello, hai.

Just got myself a macbook pro, they're pretty sweet but the freeware m$paint substitute i've downloaded is pants. Anyone know of any good programs out there just for low-res stuff?

Also has anyone used one of those wacom Cintiq* tablets?

*thanks Darth  ;)

Play secret files for the DS, that's good.
#1398
hah, that's totally Masi Oka on number four. Although my judgement may be impaired after spending 7 hours of valuable sleeping time doing a case study on The historical and contextual beliefs represented in heroes.

Save the cheerleader and all that jazz.

I think "singing" is being too optimistic! ^_^

J/K, I sing 10X worse.

I can get away with it by hiding behind the grunge image.  :=
