Has no idea where to post this. Hope this is okay:

Something has been bothering me after watching a few playthroughs of Heroine's Quest on Youtube. I've noticed that on perhaps a third of them, AGS' gametime seems to be incredibly slow as seen below:

Watch the avalanche and troll animation:

Normal:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWs7UyuPj1o#t=332

Slow (in this version, the perfectly timed music needed to restart as well):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8wLFC78RJU#t=337

I remember awhile back, before the latest AGS version (v3.3??) was released, I was also experiencing this issue on my laptop. It mysteriously went away however, and I can't seem to reproduce it anymore. The bizarre thing was, I could eliminate the issue by opening a Chrome browser. I never knew why this worked.

Any one have any insight on this, or has also experienced this?

Crystal Shard is proud to announce the release of Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok, available for FREE download!

Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you have a world to save, and must use your wit, guile and inventory to puzzle your way through. Like in many roleplaying games, you can customize your character with various classes and skills, and must train yourself in combat to stand a chance against the fierce monsters in your way.

The game is designed in the spirit and atmosphere of the classics, and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character classes and several solutions to many puzzles, the game has excellent replayability.

Features:
- Explore the rich world of Norse mythology!
- Three character classes with separate side quests: use your strength as a warrior, the arcane arts as a sorceress, wit and guile as a rogue, or create a hybrid with skills from multiple classes.
- 32 distinct voice acted characters with animated portraits.
- Over 100 hand-painted backgrounds and 10,000 sprites in animations.
- Many monsters, including giants, trolls, and svartalfar.
- High replayability due to optional quests, alternative solutions, and the three different classes.

I thought it'd be fun to draw an exterior scene using one-point perspective instead of two-point. Am I just seeing things, or is the right side of the main building look out of perspective? I seems like it should come to the left a bit more, but yet it stills lines up with the vanishing point.

(apologies for the manual re-sizing)

Thanks!

Critics' Lounge / Perspective Doldrums....
Tue 12/04/2011 00:14:23
Well, here's a background from a few years back I've given a paint over. I've only recently started to really pay attention to perspective and vanishing lines. While the floor isn't so bad, the walls on the side are.

So I guess my question is: How bad is it really? I realize I'll eventually have to fix these issues as I've done quite a bit screens without any regard to proper perspective.

Criticism on anything would be appreciated as I should really learn my lesson about now. :)

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Tutorial
Fri 14/01/2011 06:32:23
Seven years ago, I made a tutorial on some beginner techniques for drawing 90s type backgrounds. Since people occasionally come across it still, I thought I'd update it as the previous techniques were somewhat out-dated.

I'm not the best artist out there, so there may be some lighting/perspective issues... not sure, but the tutorial is mainly for beginners who want to try some painting techniques.

Enjoy!

Critics' Lounge / Main character portrait

Hi! I haven't had much experience in coloring in portraits. The style I'm aiming for is that classic 90s adventure game look. Probably more Sierra than anything. Does this look alright? Anything look odd?

It's based off a black & white sketch that was done by someone helping with the game.

Thanks for any comments!

Critics' Lounge / Feeble Librarian Walkcycle
Sat 06/02/2010 22:32:03
Hello! So without being able to find a good reference on how an old man with a can would walk, here is my best attempt at a walkcycle for an old librarian.

I thought before I make this thing worse, I'd see what some expert eyes can suggest!

If anyone wants to give it a shot, here is the .psd if that makes it easier:

Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated!  :) I think the problem is primarily his leg movement.

Here he is in his chair to see how his clothes look.

Hey everyone, haven't posted in the critics lounge in years!

I'm working on combat sprites for my game Heroine's Quest. I've made about 3 attempts so far to animate the hero taking a swing at a monster with a two-handed battle axe. Each attempt has ended in failure. Sprites are not really my area, but I'm trying my best. So far, I've been using other games for references on animation. If the hero was swinging a sword, I don't think I'd have much trouble, but I can't seem to get a two-handed weapon to work.

So basically, I'm trying to have a swing to the right first. Sort of like a swing with an axe to a tree. Also, I need a slight step towards the monster while swinging. Hopefully someone can help. Even if I had some stick figures (like below) doing this, I could use that as a reference.

Cheers!

Overview:

Welcome to the inhospitable Northland, where trolls and wolves stalk the night, and where you are just one thin cloak away from turning into an icicle.

Rumor has it that Jotnar, the frost giants, are on the loose, and that Fenrir the Devourer stirs in his sleep. Gossip says that eldritch Svartalf magic runs wild, and that trade caravans disappear. People curse the incessant cold and eye each other warily, one hand on their trusty axe. And Northlanders are not known for their even temper.

What the land needs is a Heroine, and she had better arrive now. Are you up to the task, or will you die trying?

Am I missing a frame? So far I have 7 frames of animation. I'm just getting the feeling I'm missing 1 for some reason. How many frames does a walk cycle usually have just out of curiosity?

General Discussion / Photoshop Meltdown :(
Sun 03/10/2004 07:07:47
Hello,

I was working on a great background in photoshop, when I pressed crtl-s to save. Photoshop froze up and I had to reset my computer. When I booted back up, the old psd was now a .tmp file and wouldn't be reconized by photoshop. Can anyone download this file and try to restore it if such a thing is possible? Here's the link:
http://www.this-is-me.ca/corby/pic.psd

Also, I just installed new memory to my computer. Could this have been why photoshop failed?
Thanks!

Could someone possibly match the perspective of the roof to the floorboards? This is my first interior scene and I'm inexperienced.  :)

Thanks and please ignore the plainess of the room!

Is there a simple way to make my ego sprite walk faster? I guess it'd be increasing it's step size. Is there a non-scripting way to do this?
Thanks

Hey,
I can't seem to export a working mask from photoshop. Can someone tell me what the required formats that are involved? ex) 256 colors?, resolution, file format, 8-bit or 16-bit, foreground color, background color, ect ect... I have no clue on how to make this work. Also, I can use a mask for walk-behind areas right?
Thanks!

Quick question... can AGS resize a sprite for you? Or do I have to draw different sizes of sprites? If AGS can resize them, does the product look bad?
Thanks

How's this looking? Would a whole town like this look good? BTW I know the temple in the background is a bit out of proportion! ::)
