It can't be any harder than trying to play games or use your old software on a windows machine.

General Discussion / Re: Is 64 Bit Worth It?
Wed 22/12/2004 01:47:31
As long as it supports 32-bit as well 64-bit.  64-bit is good because it has a higher FSB, (the ACTUAL speed of your computer).  A high FSB 64-bit PC will still affect your old applications.

It was just something funny that felt like sharing.  I don't want this to turn into a memory-clogging discussion like that "Bible" thing a while back with 10,000 pages.   It's flattering to be thought about & muddled over so often.

I don't think any of us should lose sleep over it, but it was just sort of a "HUH? What" moment for me.  If that makes sense to anybody.

General Discussion / Wintermute ARMY!!!
Sun 19/12/2004 23:08:02
Recently, I read an AGS post stating that Wintermute, (a comparable AGS-type program), had introduced 3D character support into it's programming.

I checked it out, and two things were really odd:

1 - Wintermute doesn't SEEM to have any COMPLETED games.  I looked around, and could only find demos or previews of upcoming titles, (even though this engine has been around for , like, 2 years or something.

2 - Wintermute forum members seem INCREDIBLY militant against AGS, and the subject, apparently, comes up often.  I found quite a few posts involving AGS.  When an AGS member warned about a Spammer on the AGS forums, all that followed was constant flaming.  ???  It's weird that Wintermute hates AGS so much when both are completely F-R-E-E!!

I had no idea there was a war going on. ???  No one told AGSers.  Wintermute rarely comes up...... if at all.  Has anyone else noticed this?  Did I just catch them on a bad day?

Most stores where I live have an adventure game section where you can get, almost, every game featured in Just Adventure.  It's sad that some areas are so "Bottom Line" that they only carry Doom games & Sims Expansions.

I have no idea where to put this but I need a screenshot of Jesse Bains hideout, ( the FINAL screen in the game pq1 VGA).  I sent the game to my brother, and have since deleted it.  I could get it myself, but it would be an ordeal.  If anyone has Gimp & a save close to the end I would appriciate it.

P.S. It's for reference....It doesn't have to be good, or even that clear.

Thanks

I figured why would he want me to take time out of the life he gave me, to waste it away standing, sitting, kneeling, shaking hands, eating crackers, bowing my head, singing, reading. It is not a productive use of one's time and to me it's a sin.

God makes people do all that?

"Eating Crackers" Does that make low-carb dieting a sin for Christians?

Do people REALLY sit around and contemplate the bible as often as it's sounding? :o

I'm an eskimo, (native people of the North American continent for Old Worlders), and I wasn't raised around the bible so maybe I can't understand. Ã, However, no one says "Did you like Cantabury Tales" on a Doom 3 mod site. Ã, Is there some engraven law that forces someone to "stitch" the bible to EVERY aspect of his/her world?

I understand the problem.  English speakers have sort've formed their own CLAN by forcing everyone to speak their language.

We should all settle on a language NOBODY speaks so everyone's on the same level like "Esperanto" or "Elvish"  ;D

General Discussion / midi converter

I'm pretty sure I'm in the right forum; as it would help AGS users.

Is there a program that can convert standard music formats to midi?

I think the PC audience is a harder sell than the cube.Ã,  It's the only forum where Konami is competing with Splinter Cell.Ã,

It's the same reason Resident Evil 2 was re-released on the GameCube, (with almost identical graphics), for $45.Ã,  It's on the PC, with the same higher res textures, for $20.

PC users aren't so quick to bend over and take shovelware.Ã,  Konami wants people to buy Snake Eater, (upcoming to the PC).Ã,  If they re-released Solid to Computer Users with a new price tag, They would just be embarrasing themselves.

- On the other hand, each platform a company supports, generally, has a different project director.Ã,  Maybe the PC director believes in Abandonware.Ã,  He wouldn't be the first developer with this mentality.

I've thought of that, but there are a couple of puzzles that would require more than the amount of available objects, more importantly, they would all have to overlap at every angle.Ã,  For this, I'll have to wait untill it's implemented.

- P.S. is that Bug/Suggestion Tracker old or is it in current use.Ã,  I'd never seen it before.Ã,  I'm sorry if my ignorance brought me to the wrong location.

Now Object Scripting is getting overhauled, I was hoping to see "Create Object", (where a sprite can be placed anywhere on screen).  It's common for "platformer" engines, but it has some purpose in AGS.  A good example is the first puzzle in "The Island of Dr. Brain".  Players grab an object off the ground, and place it on the screen to solve a puzzle.

I hope it's implementation won't be used for evil - (Twiddleware)

I didn't look for the statement again, sorry  :'(.  I just did a search to see if the game was still there.  I read the statement when HotU first posted the game - it was in the announcement blog.  I'll try to find and get back.

P.S. - Thanks to Strazer for following up to see that the game "SOLID" was available, and not some oooolllllllddddd title.

I hope software doesn't fall under the Millenium Copyright Laws.  If someone told me I had to buy a new trumpet every six months because my old trumpet can't play "God Save the Queen 2K5", music would become freeware every 5 years too.

5 years ago when the Sega launched "SegaNet" for the Dreamcast, Sega claimed that in the first week they had 100,00 subscribers or something like that.  I HAD to jump on Console internet when it was new so I signed up, (a week after I had heard).  SegaNet, originally, would assign you a user number before you pick a "handle".

You were assigned in order of signup, (1- a billion etc.).
I was given #9.......

I thought,  at 21 & coming off the 90's, that DCillusion was poetically ironic.  Now it's just easy to remember.

- Yep, just checked.  Still there. -

The thing that suprises me the most is that Vivendi doesn't actively support these sites. Ã, They have a huge following of people that they completely ignore?!?! Ã, It's even odder since adventure games have been gaining steam lately; leading Vivendi to release another Larry game!!

Doom fans didn't just wake up & say, "How about a Quest game" Ã, Their demographic hangs out on private sites discussing THEIR COMPANY?!?!

I knew someone who was taken to court by a Sierra rep for distributing Betrayal at Krondor.  The judge asked the Sierra lawyer how one would buy the game legally, and he had no answer.  The case was dismissed, but within a week Sierra was selling the game online - (of course, with another lawsuit threat).  The game was removed from the site.  I think this is a pretty standard argument.  Abandonware exists because companies can't claim they're losing money unless they can prove they're actually SELLING the game currently.  Most companies don't bother because they pay more in electric bills just keeping the mints running than any sales they may acrue.

P.S.   - Anyone who knows about "Chainsaw Monday" should download a Space Quest game faster than you can say Vivendi

- Konami just released Metal Gear Solid 1 as Abandonware to boost excitement for Snake Eater.....Why don't other companies think of that!!!!

- The ISDA only recognizes the rights of a game after its original run if the publisher is a paid member.....Crapzilla!!!!

- Warez is a tough subject given that the first program Microsoft released came from "warez" stolen from Steve Jobs, and no one seems to say anything about Windows.
