General Discussion / Re: Wine for Windows?

I'm trying to run Blade Runner & 2 Jumpstart games from the same time period.

Is there an emulator that emulates 16-bit applications on a 32-bit Windows XP system?

When I bought my computer, I could play, occasionally, 16-bit apps, but after my restart....NOTHING!!!  Not a single 16-bit Windows app.

I've tried everything & called everybody.  So if anyone has an idea, I love to hear it.  My software isn't very old; circa 1997 - Blade Runner for example.  This is the time period I can't run on my system.

Maybe, Flukeblake, you should talk to CJ, & your parents, about starting a website called AGS Jr..  It could be for kids like you!!

There are Muppet Babies, Baby Looney Toons, why not baby AGS?

Have your thoughts really heard with forums like:
-Which Old Guy Suxors Most
-Candy that Roxors
-Guess What I Just Found

You could make your OWN games like:
-Stickman Ditches Skool
-Thorn: Notebook Doodle Barbarien
-The Glorious Slave Empire of FlukeBlake Warning: Contains BOOBS  :o

You'd work out the details, of course

After watching "III" does anyone feel like we're missing a movie?

The wookie battle feels completely summarized

-There's one scene in the movie where Anakin does some fancy flying, (so as to lay some validity to Obi-wan saying how great he was in "IV").

-Anakin tells Obi-wan "no more loose-wire jokes" even though there has never been 1 loose wire joke in the entire trilogy.

To be fair, this is the best prequel by far.  I don't think people would have judged this one as harshly if the first 2 didn't exist.  It was the only prequel that felt like Star Wars to me.  I really liked how Anakin & Obi-wan were, basically, flying a cross-breed of a TIE fighter & the Millenium Falcon; finally good reverse thinking.  The beast Obi-wan chased Grevious with was totally Star Wars.  Grevious is a very Sci-Fi monster, & a scentient robot/cyborg explains why the droids talk to each other.  When C-3PO states, "I'm sure Anakin's all right, he went to the temple," while Padme sees the temple is, in fact, ON FIRE!!! - That's vintage 3PO! :D

It's just "Too little, Too late"  There's too much tainted material.  You can never explain how Han & Luke get past anyone dressed as Storm Troopers; as they all sound exactly alike.  I know people say anyone can join the troopers, but what about when Leia says, "Aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper,"  She, practically, spells it out that they're, somewhat universal, but identical? Or why Owen Lars doesn't remember C-3PO.  & Don't even get me started on how stupid it would be for Obi-Wan to hide Vader's son at his brother's house, on his home planet, disguised, in full dress-robes as One of the last Jedi Knights in the entire galaxy!!!!

- P.S. - I wish the Sith used purple lightsabers.  That would seem right.  The Jedi's Blue/Green combo seems to work well; having three colours to the Sith's one red colour doesn't seem fair.  Aren't the Sith supposed to be the "flashy" ones.  While we're at it, why don't we see more double bladed lightsabers, or other weapons?  Why can't we have a "House of Flying Daggers" jedi that throws a bunch of returning lightsaber daggers?  I think it would have made the movie more fun, & I don't want to hear that George Lucas is above that "Matrix" crap!!!

I like the idea.

While I like the "retro" feel of classic games, there are some things I didn't remember until I break out the emulators; like how awful the edges were.  Cleaning up the lines would give the game a feel that I think I remember, as opposed to what it really was.

I don't know how people will feel about Peasant's Quest VGA?

I mean, it's a parody of 80's Sierra; so there's a lot of humor that wouldn't exist in an update, like the hideous walk cycles, or the crazy verb structuring, etc.  It seems a game that's flawed by designed would lose something in the transfer.

That paintover is incredible!!! :o

I believe it answers my question to use 16-bit colour.  Although the colours you've chosen are brilliant,  I don't think I could even attempt sprite work at under 20 colours, & it is beginning to lose some Sierra-ness to it with the lack of assigned colours.

Big Brother - The offer's still open for a paintover.  You're a great low-res artist, any critiques you offer are apreciated.

Oz - Almost all Sierra game sprites were made this way.  While it's true I'm trying to avoid making it look like crap, I still want to copy the style. The game would be a nostalgic piece.  For better or for worse, I think referencing the original is unavoidable.

Babar - I guess it is confusing if you haven't played the games.  Being a beat-cop is BORING!!!  In #2 exclusively, & in the other games partially, the character changes to "plain-clothes" detective.  I guess in the 80's/early 90's this was very cool.

Fovmester - I'll see how well that works.  I am concerned with making the game look like it would fit between the 2 VGA games, & PQ1 was made with the same pallette & style as PQ3; so I don't think I can venture very far considering the variables I'm trying to follow.

just kidding ;)

It's not like the styles even remotely resemble each other.  I like the sprite.

I see after I was getting such mad props for my uber-sprite, you come back to bump your post to the top of the forum & steal my thunder.

Well, sir, let the games begin..... ;)

Hey give Andail a break,

He's a moderator, but it's not like he gets paid to be a fair witness or anything, let him be a nerdy forum member for once in his life.  :=

Oh no, I didn't mean I only used the colours of the character.

I counted the number of colours on the sprite, & then loaded the full 256-colour PQ3 palette into PSP to allow it to decrease the colouring by picking the best 32 colours.

I could make my own palette, but I'm still leaning towards borrowing one from people who had more experience in that area.  I don't know how they picked 256 colours that would best fit their entire game.
#73
My only problem is the edges are too "burned".  Try anti-aliasing less, or design the picture larger & have a program shrink it for you.
#74
I'm really impressed  8)

Ok, I'm inspired now, I'm going to see what my computer can do, (I don't know why I didn't think of this before).....

I counted the colours of the PQ3 sprite, (32), and had Paint Shop try to get my sprite down to the same number using the PQ3 palette.

I came up with this

Now does AGS allow for 32 colours for sprites, or am I still looking at 16-bit colour?
#75
Have at it - Paintovers are welcome,

I'd still like the jacket to look ruffled, that's what I'm having trouble with, the pro's seem to do it with 3 colours.

I'm also trying to decide if I want to deal with effects like PQ3's neon-red shirt.  That is another factor that keeps me from cutting the colours.
#76
That's funny,  ;D I didn't even notice the feet - Thanks

I can't see what's wrong with the head - Please clarify the critique.
#77
Well, my last game went bust, but I'm trying again - slowly.

After multiple PQ2 remakes have been dropped, I've counted 3, I'm thinking of taking a stab at it.  Here is the main character sprite for critique.  Any help is appreciated as I haven't done much work in low-res sprite work.  As it stands, it will be 16-bit colour as I can't get the character lower than 116 colours & still have any quality.  It's original, no rips or edits, but I did use both the PQ2 & PQ3 character sprites as reference, but I suppose that's a given.

Anyway, thanks for looking.

Adobe is made from Cinder, (red & orange), I don't know if that helps, but it might add some colour to your scene.

Wow -  :o

Nice reply, maybe you should wait to post until you master the skills of the keyboard.

I know all those buttons can be intimidating, but stick with it, you'll have it in no time.

I know they aren't like the Golden companies of yesterday, but I think we should leave the Adventure Company/DreamCatcher alone in our rantings.

It's one of the only production companies keeping point-&-click commercial, & they work their a$$es off.
