Hi there everybody,

This thread will provide information on the ceremony.

Times
The AGS Awards ceremony will be held at 6pm GMT on the 31/1/2004.

Voting will end 4pm GMT 31/1/2004.

I have decided to start the ceremony at 6pm because it is the beginning of #ags' peak time.

Ceremony
The ceremony will be held on Quakenet in an IRC channel called #agsawards.

Please arrive between 5:30pm-6pm, as the show will begin sharp on 6pm (If there are no technical difficulties).

Please do not arrive before then, as we need time to prepare the channel -- If you do arrive before 5:30, you will be kicked.

Watching the Ceremony
The ceremony works like this:

During the award announcements, everyone in the channel will be de-voiced, meaning they will not be able to type anything into the channel.

The only people not devoiced will be two "bodyguards" (responsible for voicing and devoicing various winners and presenters), a "cameraman" (responsible for taking a log of the ceremony), and myself.

The awards will be announced by myself and a number of presenters.  (These presenters will be randomly chosen -- I'll PM you and ask if you'd like to present an award, and if you don't want to just say no).

The bodyguards will then voice the presenter, who will announce the nominees and the winner.

Then, the bodyguards will voice the entire room, which will allow people time to applause -- after this, the bodyguards will devoice the room.

Then, the winner will be voiced and give an acceptance speech -- after this, he or she will be devoiced.

Tips
The reason for the voicing/devoicing is it gets very noisy when people talk during the ceremony - However, you can still treat #ags as an "audience room", where you can chat about the ceremony.

Also, it's usually a good idea to tile both the #ags and #agsawards windows -- This allows you to follow the action in both channels.

Please try and be supportive of all winners as much as you can -- The awards are voted by the entire community, and thus the winners are selected by the majority of he community.

Apart from that, have fun and enjoy the show!

- DG

Good to hear you're working again, C-leks.

Doesn't matter if the job is menial -- that often means it's low responsibility.

I've got a menial job, but it means I have the lowest amount of blame if something goes wrong.

Sometimes rock bottom isn't always bad.  ;D

So hopefully this year the show will actually be about the awards!

Don't be silly -- it's never about the awards.

It's about what Nicole Kidman is wearing.

Even if she isn't nominated, it's always about what she's wearing.

Always.

Hopefully this year certain idiots won't get on stage and abuse their constitutional rights!

Yeah, it's kinda like idiots who buy a gun cause "The constitution says we can! Hyuck hyuck hyuck!"  ;D

Go for it, my man.

Might fine surprises, especially Depp and Fernando Meirelles -- didn't see that one coming for Best Director.

Pity about Johansson, I agree.

Also, after having a look at the full list, it's great to see Errol Morris up for an Oscar (finally) -- If you've ever seen his often-overlooked doco "The Thin Blue Line", you'll know why!

Another good highlight -- NZ actress Keisha Castle-Hughes up for best actress in Whale Rider!

In fact, all of NZ are really going to be partying!  ;D

Also, Barcik, William H Macy didn't get nominated.

Some facts and records broken (from oscarwatch);

* I think Keisha's case is also the first time in my memory that an actor has been nominated in a lead character after being heavily campaigned in supporting and even receiving a SAG nomination for best supporting actress.

* This is the first year since 1994 that all five best actress nominees are in movies not nominated for best picture.

* Keisha Castle-Hughes youngest best actress nominee ever at 13.

* First time ever at least one african american is nominated three years in a row.

* Sofia Coppola is now the first American female ever nominated for Director

* This year, for the first time since 1969, the MAJORITY of the Best Picture nominees have no acting nominations! ROTK, Master & Commander, Seabiscuit -- zip. The last time there were three out of five was in 1969 (Butch Cassidy, Z, and Hello Dolly), and the only other time was in 1962. (It's not fair to compare the pre-1944 years when there were 10 Best Picture nominations.)

It depends on how big your game is.

Try tripod for starters -- they usually have decent space and file allowances.

I was rooting for Murray, but a Depp win would be more deserving.

I like Murray's role better because, for me, he gave a little more depth to his character.

That's not to say Deep didn't do a good job -- If Murray wasn't on the list, Depp would be a shoo-in.

As for Johansson, I haven't seen Something's Got To Give yet, so I can't really make that decision.

Though, Johansson was good.

Also, I like awards ceremonies.

Forget all the glitz and glamour and who's-paid-so-much-on-marketing.

It's fun and exciting.

You got five nominees and only one will walk away with the trophy -- It's a tense moment watching it happen!

I will strive harder for next year.

I voted for you, Rodey!

Thanks for organising this, SSH.

I wasn't unhappy with anything really this year -- I think all the awards for films I've seen were well-deserved.

Last year, i was very bitter because I hated The Hours -- I found it a depressing film with a very shallow message.

But I think everyone who won seem to deserved their win this year.

Which brings me to my next point: When I was reading the winners on the Oscarwatch forums, a lot of people said that it was the most boring ceremony this year becasue everything was so predictable and there were no surprises (except for Osama winning best foreign film).

However, I think this only furthers the fact that each winner deserved their win because the fact that people can see some frontrunners means that the majority of their views matches the majority of voters' views.

It's different when they say there were surprises but then say a second later so-and-so doesn't derserve it.

Marisa Tomei, anyone?

I'm writing this as they're announced, but there have been a few winners that have made me very happy -- like:

Best Actor in a Comedy: Bill Murray -- Lost In Translation (YAY!)

Best Comedy series: The Office

Best Comedy Actor: Ricky Gervais -- The Office

Best Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins -- Mystic River

Best Drama Series: 24

LOTR just won best music

And Best Song!

Best Screenplay: Sofia Coppola -- Lost In Translation (Living up to her Dad's good name!)

Now all the hardcore film geeks at the Oscarwatch forums are having an argument over whether LOTR should win Best Drama or not while Michael Douglas wins the lifetime achievement award.

Best Director: Peter Jackson -- LOTR: ROTK (Third time's a charm!  ;D )

Best Actor in a TV movie: Al Pacino -- Angels in America (Hoo-haa!!!)

Best Actor in a Drama: Sean Penn -- Mystic River

Best Actress in a Drama: Charlize Theron - Monster (Haven't seen the movie yet, but heard Theron delivers one of the best performances in movie history ever!)

Best Comedy: Lost in Translation (YAY!!!)

Best Drama: LOTR: ROTK (Like I said, third time's a charm!)

Migs likes big butts and he can not lie
His other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waste
And a round thing in their face
They get sprung
Wanna pull up front
Cuz they notice that butt was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
Migs is hooked and he can't stop staring
Oh, baby Migs wants ta get with ya
And take your picture
His homeboys tried to warn he
But with that butt you got
Makes Migs so horny!
