General Discussion / Re: Educational Game
Sat 30/08/2014 00:11:48
How about a maze with doors north, south east and west, doors have maths problems which students have to solve to open. Have three paths through the maze, long, medium & short. Easy problems for long path, medium problems for medium path and hard problems for shortest path. Have some form of timer counting down. Just a idea it would need some work to make it interesting.

I do remember a game from school (back in the 1980s) which was like space invaders only slower and you had to solve a maths problem to fire a missile.

This module replaces the mouse x,y with Blob.x & Blob.y so that objects that are small within a game can be found easier.
I have included a simple demo & documentation.

Basically it searches for any object within a square of 17x17 pixels (there is a #define which is set at 8 so it searches 8 pixels left/right and up/down) with the mouse coordinates at the center, then returns the x,y of that object. Its to make small objects easier to find (less pixel hunting).

This is a very simple module (my first) and hasn't been tested fully (I am using it in the game I'm creating), you will need AGS 3.0 or above to use it.

Download here.

Feel free to post any improvements comments etc.

I will do some little retweaks, the collar needs lowering and extending outwards. I think a little recolouring of the helmet is good advice.

I know you like the idea of gray but I'm just not comfortable with it, it doesn't feel right (to me anyhow :)).

I'll post a revised and complete character when Ive finished, but I think its time to wind this one down. EDIT: I want to move on to designing Fifi (DMs ex who is never seen in the show, and is from Paris, I was thinking a poodle but Ive scrapped that idea)

Thankyou to Darth, Mandle and of course Tabata you helped a lot it in pushing this character in the right direction.

EDIT : revised image

Revised recolouring, I think its almost there. Any final thoughts?
#107
Hadn't considered changing the clothing, was going for a leather look, but I like your thinking. Working on something else at the moment so I will post a fresh recolouring tomorrow.
#108
I dont think stripes would fit, but I may play around a bit to see if your right.

perhaps calling her Koala Lumpa?
#109
Just finished recolouring :-

Darth I did this before seeing your post but it looks like we were thinking along the same lines.

I like the brown one though, thoughts?

EDIT : In situ

(background still a WIP (no critique yet)).

Baron encouraged me to enter this competition as a way of improving my creative writing. So heres my entry, which is rather short.

I was back at my office, the incident with Freddy had left a bad taste in my mouth that I couldn't get rid off. I looked out over the city, desperate for any distraction. The night hung like a comforting blanket, hiding its ugliness, hiding the dirt and filth that seemed to creep into every crevice of every building and citizen.

How could a city have a personality? This one did. It was a femme fatale, tempting you with its seductive and illicit ways, promising you everything, then ripping you apart like a feral beast. Yet people still lived here, some even found happiness. Not me though. Never me.

I lowered my eyes from the view and they fell on the bottle in the corner. Another of my old mistresses.  It was a gift from a client at  the conclusion of a successful case some years earlier. My old days had robbed me of the memory of who exactly the client was or of any details of the case. I had never touched a drop of it,  preferring cheap bottles, with bright labels, to shut out the pain back then.

I could remember that the glass of the bottle was hand blown by a group of French monks that had settled in Louisiana some time before the war. I could remember that they carefully, and meticulously, produced one of the smoothest, and finest tasting bourbons in any of the fifty states. I could remember every word on the label even those in French. I could remember every facet and detail of that bottle. It would take me the best part of a year to earn enough to be able to buy another bottle.

Gloria had once asked me why I kept it.

'You could sell it.' she had suggested.

'It's for the clients' I had glibly replied.

That wasn't the truth, not all of it anyhow. I had never offered any of it to a client, but it was there if I ever wanted to. I mainly kept it as a reminder. It was my test. My will against a piece of glass and the liquid it contained. The determination of one man against an inanimate object, John Henry would have been proud. Not man versus machine, but desire versus temptation.

A little bead of condensation glistened on the perfect neck of the bottle. It didn't care if I was tempted or not. It didn't care If I was angry or happy or sad, or if I ignored it because I was busy on a case. It didn't need me to talk about nothing and everything, or remember its birthday. It didn't care what clothes I wore, or who my friends were.

It just was there whenever I needed or wanted it.

I would have just one glass,  I could handle it.

Damn those monks! Damn Freddy!

There was a knock at the door. It was a welcome as the sound of a laughing woman to a man returning home from the war. I tore myself away from my temptress and scrambled to open the door, it could be a lead.

I should have just drunk the bottle. I should have remember what happened to John Henry.

Hope you like it. Haven't done any creative writing since my schooldays (decades ago).

Cheers,

Dadalus

Thanks to Tabata I have revised the character again (a fresh boatload of sugar coated eucalytus leaves is on its way).

Its getting there...still not quite happy with it. I think the colouring of the face is wrong but I cant seem to find the right fit.
#112
I see what you mean Tabatha, shortening the body and enlarging the head would help. I will rework the character and fiddle about with colouring.

Your not a koala fetishist as well? :)

I have not completed an AGS game yet, so my following comments are based on general experience.

I do suffer from lack of motivation, like most people its easy to work on something when you enjoy it, harder when the shine has worn off and the slog begins. At stages like this I try to rekindle my passion for a project. Perhaps step away from it and focus on the things that fired you up in the first place. Think about why your doing it, if its for fun, and your not having fun maybe its time to stop and revisit it later on.

Only you know what works for you, and there are some great suggestions that have already been made, which you could try out.

I wish you the best.

Reworked the character, reshaping the legs and jacket, with a little change to the boots and belt colours.

I'm still not happy with the legs and feet any suggestions?
#115
Don't worry, I didn't take offense. A lot of the backgrounds are my recreations of shots from the original cartoon, and follow that style. Any original backgrounds that I create, I try to keep that style going.

I cant take credit for a lot of the artwork I am just recreating work done by the original artists.
#116
I assume your talking about the characters having black outlines and the backgrounds not having outlines?

Its a personal choice of mine, to make characters stand out from backgrounds, some may like it (Me :)) some may not (everyone else :)).

Weekly update in main post.

EDIT: Proposed Main Menu

#118
I'm not happy with the feet either, I will rework them tomorrow. At this stage its just getting the look down for most of my characters which is why they have similar poses etc. They are all supposed to be in a 3/4 view but I'm not fully sure all of them are. Animation comes later and whilst I'm looking forward to it, its not a skill I've tackled before (I am researching techniques at the moment). I don't like the 'flash' animation style, but I am wary that I could be adding a lot of work if I use traditional animation.
#119
I am that sadist! :)

I was originally trying for a look of hair sticking out that took on the shape of the ears, but it doesn't really work.

Revised work :

Working on a female pilot based on a koala

Ive included alternative heads so you can see what I am playing around with, any thoughts?
