Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm annoyed to see this thread kept around the surface of the GIP board for about a year (or longer, I lost track).

I'm looking forward to playing this game as much as the next AGSer. However, it seems like every time this thread starts to sink, some newbie posts something unimportant or Dan releases more sketches for the game. There's nothing wrong with concept art or compliments...but building a thread on that gets monotonous.

Ultimately, the point of a GIP entry is to spread awareness. Going beyond that goal merely leads to a 12-page worship thread like this one.

Perhaps Dan can take all his lovely concept art and game info and compile it into a nice little webpage. He could even have a comments section so people could post compliments and emoticons.

When I read this thread, I didn't just see the quality art Dan created. I saw a project announced far, far too soon. The hype wore off a while ago, and disconfirmed expectations can never have a positive influence on a project.

Dan, I would suggest looking at the other "professional-looking" AGS projects. Every once in a while, the author updates the thread with news about the project, but certainly no effort is made to keep it at the top of the board. It's part of a normal cycle, where the topic sinks as the author works on the game, then reappears once some progress has been made.  When I see these  project threads at the top again, I know that the author made an update (unlike this one, which hovers around the top, but offers nothing truly substantial in terms of news).

I think DONNA, Rise of the Hidden Sun, Indy FOY, A Tale of Two Kingdoms, Shadowplay, and countless other projects are doing it right. Take an example from them.

I can understand your point of view, but it seems to me that it's a personal naunce more than anything.

Firstly, i'm not creating this game to attempt to become some untouchable AGS figure, i'm creating it to boost my portfolio, as i wish to work in the games industry in the near future, so my intentions stretch far beyond the process of wooing a few people on a forum with pretty pictures. And i'd argue to ask when is a good time to announce a game then? Surely the premise is you create an idea and a story, along with some early art or screenshots then go from there, which is what i did. Yes, i realise the game has been in production for a hideously long amount of time, but i do have other commitments, and i dont work on it religiously. I've never commited to a release date, but i've always retained that i'll finish the game no matter what. As for disconfirmed expectations, i'm confident i can create a very good adventture game, not just graphically but in all aspects.

As mentioned on my website, i'm creating a minisite for the game, and as mentioned in other posts here ill be reducing the amount of times i update with art etc. as i near the scripting phase, and people must understand that due to computer limitations, i must do everything in a certain order, most likely very differently to how a normal AGS game would be created.

I'm just a little bit annoyed that i feel as if i've gotten a slapped wrist for doing no harm whatsoever, if you don't like what you see inside this topic, then simple, you don't have to revisit it until you see a new one in the completed games section.

Loved Andails interview, thought it was really good :)

I'd love to do one sometime!

A little battle worn, but still standing. 11 colours, i missed the bone colour on the pallete.

Edit: converted to gif.

i'm not sure of it either, thinking about it logically, 24 hours is a very long time to stay at a computer non stop, and id imagine some of these games would take more than 2 hours to play through (FOA, MI2, both spring to mind.). It's probably doable, but I wouldnt be suprised if its fake.

I just use a simple text document with different catagories.

Mine includes things like:

Background - Your outline of the story
Characters - Names and details, what role they play etc, i also make note of weather the sprites are completed or not.
BGs - a list of all the bgs in your game, important to keep track of how many there will be etc, and how many of those youve finished.
Script- A written script of how the characters will interact, with possible dialogues etc.
Puzzles- A list of puzzles within your game, logically in order, probably worth including the list of items here too.
Various/extras - Perhaps notes to self or references youd like to note to put within your game etc.

I must compliment you on the excellent characters and background. The Attorney thing is pretty darn funny.

You wouldn't be interested in doing backgrounds for a game of mine, would you?[/sleazy recruitment scheme]

Lol thanks,

sorry, i'm a little too busy with the game and numerous other bits and bobs at the moment!

hey, thanks :)

Yeah i am, not at that stage yet but it wont be too long before i start putting it all together.

i thought from looking closely there was a buoild up of snow at the bottom of the window, then the actual landscape  was seen higher? that's how it seems to me anyway?
#229
Looks a lot better!

As a final suggestion, just something about the outside thats not quite right. Its evident that youve drawn the snow after youve drawn the frame, as it looks as if the hill 'ends' at the sides. Id recommend drawing the snowscape fiully then cutting away the window frame from it. The snow's also too bright to saw its night time, itsd be more of a blue colour than white:

heres a really shite example ive just knocked up:

on the top picture, i drew the frame 1st then added the snow, on the bottom 1 i drew what was outside the window then added the frame over the top, i also changed the snows colour to suite the lighting outside. I hope you understand what i mean. Otherwise good work, a nice scene :)

much better :) very impressive.

looks better, just bare in mind the shadow andail has painted though. Your shadow is very long, which impleies there's a low lightsource casting the shadow, this isnt the case as the lamp is quite high.

come on guys this is going a little OT. If you want to discuss this surely itd be an idea to start a thread somewhere or PM. I'm only saying this for squinkys sake, as i feel its been hijacked somewhat.

Not much there, but its a start i guess:

Just a small querie, why is the sofa facing away from the fire? surely itd make sense to have things like chairs facing the fire in as room like this, as most homes do.

can we see some of your artwork as a comparison Andail?  Or some actual CONSTRUCTRIVE critique on Squinky's work?
Like Igor, who showed Squinky some ways to improve his work, show us how YOU would improve upon these works.
You are a moderator, live up to the title.

Woah take it easy!

Andail posted links, surely this will give squinky some inspiration or ideas on how to improve? He didn't say 'it's rubbish i dont like it' so i dont see what the problem is.

General Discussion / Competition idea.
Wed 09/11/2005 19:29:34
I was thinking it might be cool to have a competition where the entrants are given a background from an adventure game, a series of characters and other sprites, and have to come up with the funniest 'scenario'. Imagine those stickerbooks where there was a scene and you could stick things like people and items on them and youll get what i mean.

an example would be:

BG: The bar on scabb island.

Characters: Guybrush, lechuck, Largo and Stan

Items: Banana, bloody mary, monkey, manilla envelope.

Captions could also play a role.

Its probably a shite idea. Someone make it better. Quick. :)

looks cool, certainly unique anyway.

Not sure if you'd be interested but i bet you could get a lot of work on AGS voiceovers. I'm sure you've noticed the average user on her is a teen or 20 something male, and you have a good voice for certain roles within games.
