It's not an excellent tutorial in the sense that if you couldn't draw like this before, you probably can't do it now either. There are no handy techniques, no hints or tips, no theoretical thumbrules etc.

It's still an awesome illustration though. It'd fit perfectly in a children's book or similar. Very well done!

Yes i understand what youre saying, but in my 1st post i said it was more to give people an idea of how i personally create work, rather than showing them how to. I'll try my best to make something a little more user friendly out of it though lol  ;D

nice bg, my only suggestion would be to give thew lighting a blue tinge, it seems that those neon strips should really dictate the colour in the room. I just did a quick colour balance in PS to give you a rough idea:

It could turn into a drawing tutorial if we just had the basic shapes illustration of each item.  It goes from basic outline to more detailed sketch in the blink of an eye.

I don't know if this is something that can be taught with a tutorial, it would more likely take a crapload of practice.  I analyze the objects and find it's more the way everything fits together and then the particular feeling and lighting you add to it later.  You could leave it this sketchy or clean it up with sharp lines & colors and the overall feel would be the same - professional.  I'm envious.  It just means I'll have to work on it more.

yeah i understand what you mean, in that some of the steps are perhaps too large, what ill try to do is create something that will slot between the rough composition sketch and the more detailled one. I should stress the importance of using a drawing proram that enables you to work with layers, as it gives you a lot more flexibility when adding colour and detail.

did a small colour over on this tonight, just trying to get a rough idea of where the light will effect certain items etc, and i wanted to get that pinky/orange-y glow. Any feedback welcome, I'm gonna start on the final painover in the next few days.

P.S: excuse the few 'rebelious' streaks, my tablet went a bit odd when i was doing it lol.

I use Pro Motion...Can't stand photoshop for pixel work, it's like using a tank to kill a fly

once you know your shortcuts etc, its actually very easy. ;)

I don't know...The Wizard of Oz is a kid's movie. Some kid's going to go online, download your game, and tell all hois little friends about it, their parents will be horrified, and you'll get a bad rap in the adventure game sosciety.
I like the idea of the game...just don't make it so morbid. Ick.

I think it's really cool to put a dark spin on such a cheery and sickeningly bright tale, it makes it all the more interesting.

To be honest i think its too close to really differentiate between the 3. Perhaps look at some green-yellow hues on the next edit?

Nice idea about the colour wash. Never thought of that. Pretty background too. However, there is one thing that unfortunately a tutorial can never teach. That is the crapload amount of work required during the first 2 steps to make something as purty as you did :P.

lol thanks for the input, i guess it's more of a process tutorial than a drawing one.

Ok i was just doodling and i thought id do a rough sketch of a room for the game, so i thought id GIF it to give you an idea of how i create my rooms:

1. Make a very rough light sketch with a basic layout

2. Add a more detailled plan over this sketch (sometimes i do two or 3 of these depending on how much detail im going for)

3. Add a colour wash for lighting ideas etc.

Following this i usually go about adding refined detail and colour detail, ill add this step once i get the BG finished. Hope this gives some people an insight into how i do things, not sure if it's the easiest way but for me its just the method i find easiest and quickest (this took about 10-15 minutes).

Well i guess admin permitting we could let it go on until this friday? There hasnt really bneen enough entries so far to make it a fair competition, and the downtime does account for some of that im guessing.

i agree about the centered text, as a designer i can tell you thats a big no-no, especially with large amounts of text. The site seems to work well though and i like the links page, perhaps make it a little more graphical.
