Thanks... the creepypasta could be about an AGS game that gets, well, spooky on the player.

Even those that are not horror genre get all spoopy and do weird stuff.  Could be all just within the game, or may even include a portion where it spills out in the real world (for instance, giving that player nightmares long after, or maybe his body freezes up--except for his head and arms--and he MUST beat the game in order to escape the grasp... stuff like that).
Well, I know what I'm going to steal for my creepypasta.
I'm kidding, of course. (laugh)

This should definitely be possible in AGS. I've certainly seen more complex things made in the engine.
But boy would it be hard to code all of it. And like Khris said, if you've never scripted before, and/or never used AGS, then this would be an impossible first game.

Start with something simple like an Escape The Room type of game or something, and only tackle a game like this when you're confident that you could do it.
If you don't know whether or not it's possible to do it, then you're probably not good enough to do it.
Good luck though. :-D

One way to do it that comes to my mind, would be to import the background with all of the objects and characters visible, as a sprite. Then assign that sprite to a new character, and set the scaling of a new blank room so that the "background" character starts off slightly small, and then gets slowly bigger. Then all you need to do is switch to the actual room that it's zooming into after it's finished, and the crossfade should trick the player into thinking they just saw that room actually zoom in.

The only downside is that you can't move while it's zooming in, and you have a lot of editing to do if you want to change anything in that room.

What's this? Some sort of DosBox that works with Windows applications?

Sounds brilliant. :-D

I also disagree pretty vehemently that Photoshop looks best. It's better than the GIMP, but it's still afflicted with dithering pretty much covering the entire image â€" and what's worse, single-pixel dithering.
Well there was more than one option for Photoshop (and GIMP). Most notably to take off the dithering. Photoshop also had an option to use a patterned dithering, which made the whole image look like a checkerboard. I just put up the ones that I thought looked the best.
But from your response, I'm starting to think that maybe I should put up the others.

You could also try IrfanView's color reduction.
And try out IrfanView's colour reduction while I'm at it. Which is yet another art program I already have on my computer. (laugh)

EDIT:
Here are the other settings for colour reduction.
Spoiler

Having looked at all of these, I am absolutely gobsmacked at how good IrfanView looks. I actually had to double check to see if it was indeed 128 colours (it is).
That being said, I think Gimp with positioned dithering has a certain type of charm to it.

maybe we can add some generic inv items to the template, like rope, lighter, flashlight without batteries, gun, flamethrower...
tin opener, bucket, pole, hook, pole with hook. You know, the items that appear on almost every adventure game. I think I actually compiled a list of about fifty items which appear in multiple games... for some reason.

When you lowered the res with nearest neighbour, which software did you use? This might factor in as well.
Oops, I didn't think about that.
I used Paint.NET to lower the resolution, since it's my drawing program of choice. (Yeah, I have way too many drawing programs on this computer.)

Why isn't this thread just the words AMNESIA and SOMA over and over again until we're all dead?!
Because Amnesia was an annoying game that punished you for being in the light and punished you for being in the dark.
Good game though. Even though I didn't like it. :-D

And as for Soma... I actually haven't gotten around to playing that one yet. :-[

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like everyone is an agreement with allowing the use of RON assets. So maybe we should include a link to them on every MAGS thread.
Also, Maniac Mansion Mania is basically a German version of RON, with a set of characters that most people on this forum know about, which in turn could maybe make it a more appealing option (I know that I'm usually turned off from using any RON assets because I don't know the characters or locations, regardless of how many people say that it's ok). So maybe include a link to the MMM resources as well.

What if we did something like this: Intentionally vague, broad topics on even months and specific gameplay/story challenges on odd months.
I like that idea. It will give you a bit of a heads up before hand, whether or not you should be preparing yourself for a month of game making.

Also, I think that MAGS should stay at once a month. If you increase it I'll think we'll end up getting the rebound effect, which is basically that the more we increase the amount of time available, the more lazy everyone will become (and the larger their scope will be). Think of it like studying for your exam one day before the exam, regardless of how much time you had to study, or leaving your lights on more because you now have an energy efficient light bulb.

Amazing job!
Can you clarify which method you used to "make the image in 128 colors"? did you 1) Posterize? 2) Switch the image mode to "indexed"? 3) Save as gif and chose the number of color from the export settings?
I switched the image to "Indexed". I could try the other ways if you want me to.

Can someone testify that Gimp color reduction is better than Photoshop color reduction?
Well, since no one responded to this, I've decided to take it upon myself to find out.
I've hidden it in spoiler tags, because of all of the images.
Spoiler

First I got the original scan of the Phatt Island Wharf from Monkey Island 2.
[imgzoom]https://orig00.deviantart.net/8f1e/f/2018/108/a/1/wharf_original_by_danvzare-dc95x1k.png[/imgzoom]
Here's the final version as seen in the game, for comparision.
[imgzoom]https://orig00.deviantart.net/05b1/f/2018/108/4/9/wharf_final_by_danvzare-dc95x1x.png[/imgzoom]

Next I lowered the resolution down using Nearest Neighbour.
[imgzoom]https://orig00.deviantart.net/955d/f/2018/108/b/b/nearest_neighbour_by_danvzare-dc95x25.png[/imgzoom]

And then I made the image into 128 colours, on Photoshop, Gimp 2, and Pixelator. Messing about with the settings, to try and get the best look.

Photoshop
[imgzoom]https://orig00.deviantart.net/c3a1/f/2018/108/5/3/photoshop_by_danvzare-dc95x2h.png[/imgzoom]

Gimp
[imgzoom]https://orig00.deviantart.net/9bbe/f/2018/108/d/8/gimp_by_danvzare-dc95x2w.png[/imgzoom]

Pixelator
[imgzoom]https://orig00.deviantart.net/288d/f/2018/108/4/f/pixelator_by_danvzare-dc95x46.png[/imgzoom]

I personally think Photoshop looks the nicest, and that Pixelator looks most like the one in Monkey Island 2.
