I haven't listened yet but I'd also add ‘why are NPCs always such assholes?' too. Seriously they are always so unhelpful.

I feel this comes back down to the basic idea that that often NPCs aren't really characters present for any real purpose than for either comic relief, to antagonize and build drama in some way, or to be an obstacle of some sort - all of which can lead to characters being unpleasant to deal with.

I always thought NPCS were there to provide hints and point you in the right direction.
They do tend to be assholes though. :-\

I last posted here about fifteen years and I'm flabbergasted that this site still exists and there is still such a strong following.
Hey, stop making us all feel old! >:(

Unfortunately I can't help you with your translation problems (although considering the source code is available, maybe the problem could be fixed internally).

But I am very grateful for you posting this. I've been searching for a tool like that for years!
So thank you so very much for showing me this tool. :-D

the whole purpose for the Game.DoOnceOnly is for this purpose. Even though Danvzare's method will work, the way you had it works also and you don't need to set up the additional variable.
Wow, can you believe that I've been using AGS for years, and I never knew that Game.DoOnceOnly worked like that.
I've learnt something new. :-D

Congratulations everyone who got nominated! :-D
There's a nice diverse list this year.

We should make a game which only uses these recurring puzzles and gimmicks.
We could call it Quest Quest. (laugh)

Create a variable in the room script and set it to false, then check if that variable is false when you use the item, and if it is, set the variable to true and gain the other item. That way if you use the item again, the check will fail and you'll get a different response, such as "I've got enough wood, I don't need to chop off any more."

I think something like this code should work:
Code: ags

bool usedAxe = false;

if (!usedAxe)
{
    player.AddInventory(iWood);
    usedAxe = true;
}
else
{
    player.Say("I've got enough wood, I don't need to chop off any more.");
}

I think it's important to state that not all plot holes are equal.
You can have gaping plot holes that demand an answer, such as how Snoke managed to not be found and killed by Palpatine. And then you have tiny plot holes, such as why Stormtroopers can't hit anything despite having been previously stated to be perfect marksmen.
These are things that could usually easily be explained in the films, but weren't, hence why they're holes in the plot. (Of course not all plot holes can be explained, but I find that most can to some extent.)

Something to note is that the little plot holes will usually be explained away by fans, usually quite convincingly. The big plot holes on the other hand will usually be ignored by fans, who will state that they're not important.

In my opinion, every film does indeed have plot holes. If you analyse it long enough, you will definitely find at least one. But some films have much bigger plot holes and a much larger quantity of them, than others. And this can be distracting to the film, and ruin your immersion. It's a bit hard to stay immersed when the film constantly contradicts it's own internal logic with no explanation.

You probably have been overly self-criticising you own work though. Since that is a common thing most creators do.

What grinds my gears is when people on the bus ring the bell to get off LONG before they're anywhere near their stop.  :angry:
Why is that bad?
I thought it was a good idea to let the driver know well in advance that someone wants to get off at the next stop.
I don't do that though, I prefer to wait until the stop is actually in view (so I don't accidentally get the bus to stop at a stop that I don't want to get off at), but I do want to understand why that grinds your gears.

Same with the Evil Dead films, especially 2 & "3"...
There are people who don't like Evil Dead 3!!! 8-0

Also, thanks for the reply Mandle. At least now I can understand why people like that film, and probably why it's been kicking around my head for the past seven years or so.

Getting a container and putting a liquid in it. Usually a bucket with water, but it can also be a pan (or sometimes even a bottle). Deponia and Day of the Tentacle did it, and both of those used soapy water as well. Quite a few others games I've played have had this quite simple puzzle.
Does thay count, or is thay too generic?

Because I have something even more generic! Tin openers. Once again I can name at least two games from the top of my head where one appeared, and there are probably more than that.

Ooh, but here's a really common puzzle. Getting a long pole and sticking a hook on the end. It's appeared on Curse of Monkey Island, most of the Maniac Mansion Mania games, and I think Zak McKracken Between Time and Space had that puzzle in it as well. And I'm certain that I've seen it on other (popular and commercial) games.

I remember that film. I thought it was horrible. I've also always wondered why she never paid a homeless guy to accept the button as a gift or something.

It's really sad to see AGS Archives go. But all good things must come to an end I suppose. :~(
Thank you so much for hosting it all these years.
