No, Spacewar! had already used a starfield as a backdrop a decade earlier, in 1962.
Ah see, there's always something that came out earlier.
Also, thanks for the extra bit of knowledge. I've never heard of Spacewar before, but after looking it up, that game definitely has a background. (nod)

Awesome Icey, this all looks brilliant. :-D
Although the chubby guy looks a bit like JonTron. Is that on purpose or purely coincidental?

I bet it's regular MS Paint, but with a stereoscopic mode
I bet it's just regular MS Paint with a new name, but the exact same logo and function. Like Microsoft Edge.

Isn't Pong the first game with a background?
It had a line down the middle which served no purpose other than to serve as a backdrop. There you go, the very first background is on Pong.

That looks incredibly familiar.
Um... 4th Planet From The Sun?
Star Gate?

That is indeed King's Ques V on NES :) Not sure how many here played that version.
Wait, that game actually exists!
And here I just thought it looked like what King's Quest V would look like on the NES.

Part of the AGS charm is its 'secret club' feel. Anything to encourage mass adoption probably wouldn't be welcome by the community I'm guessing.
Wait what? I thought we were TRYING to encourage mass adoption here. (laugh)

Although Paint 3D will still be available, I'll stick to Paint.net 8-)
Same here. :-D

As for MSPaint being discontinued. It will still be quite possible to put MSPaint onto a flashdrive and then use it from there. It's what I did with the XP version of MSPaint, because I didn't like the changes made to it in Windows 7. It's a little difficult to find in your system folder, but it's a perfectly viable solution. And it's not like Microsoft was going to improve MSPaint or anything.

Now what on earth is Paint 3D?

Sci-fi is obviously the most superior genre of fiction, isn't it? :-D
Oh that's definitely true. But in terms of adventure games, most people seem to prefer a default contemporary look. Just look at how underused that Insta-Game pack was.

Hobo -  A ah...  I know it looked like Roger but I wasn't sure if it was just a generic char based on him (i think it was the alternate colors that threw me) .  Trust me to bow out of contests just when all the sci-fi themed ones start up! lol
You didn't participate just because there were a bunch of sci-fi backgrounds. Aww. :(

And now I see that voting has just begun as I was writing this.
I'll have to think about who I'm going to vote for. This is a toughie.

Rocchinator: Ooh I like that. The style kind of reminds me of Sam and Max for some reason though.

xBRANEx: Whoa, that's awesome. I don't think I've ever seen an animated background for this contest before. I probably have, but I certainly don't remember.
Personally, I love the use of gradients. Then again, I just really love gradients, even when they're done horribly wrong. (laugh)
As for any critiques. The only thing I can think of is the perspective. The corner of the room in the distance looks a little odd to me for some reason.

Why? Bring back the image in here in your original post...

It's hilarious and not breaking any rules that I know of...
Agreed, I thought it was hilarious and very fitting for the thread. :-D

As someone who is not at all interested in football, this looks interesting to me.
I can't wait to see this game finished. :-D

Morgan, I think that's King's Quest 5 on NES, no? Sort of a trick question there. :-D
I was thinking the exact same thing. (laugh)
