Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?
This does sound like a somewhat humorous type of game.

As a side note, here in the UK as of Jan 2015 it became mandatory to pay VAT on any digital item sold
Only if you sell it to another country in the EU. If you sell it to somewhere else like America, then the old fashioned "you need to sell £80,000 worth of stuff first" rule applies. Which means you could avoid it by just not selling to any other EU country. Which if you think about it, is quite ironic.

Thankfully all of that will soon be behind us. The only decent thing to come out of Brexit is probably the only thing no one has actually mentioned. (laugh)

Now that looks vaguely familiar. But I can't quite put my finger on it.
Populous?

Here's an idea, although I'm not sure if this is technically feasible.
What if you could change the maximum sprite limit in the engine. That way if you're making a tiny game, you won't have a huge chunk of memory being used for no good reason, and if you're making a huge game you can increase the maximum sprite limit to whatever you need.
All without having to remove the sprite limit and incurring all of the problems that may cause.

Would it be possible to set the size of the array for the number of sprites in the compiled game engine rather than just the source code?

Has there even been a Wizard of Oz game? ???

I was actually wondering: what's the point of letting people set their own ID for a sprite or object? Has that ever been used by anyone for anything?
I think it's there to allow some coding wizardry. Such as assigning a certain sprite based on an algorithm and stuff like that.
But has anyone ever used it for anything like that? I don't know... I doubt it though.

hint: everybody's waiting for a sequel to this game that'll probably never come.
My goodness, the number of games that describes is phenomenal. :~(

Wow, this is a really great idea.
I once made a game with a big blue cup in it... but it was a terrible TERRIBLE game that I'd just as soon forget. So I won't be posting a screenshot of the cup in that game. And since it was a difficult to find easter egg, I don't think anyone else will either. :P

Although now I'll have to search my memory for all of the AGS games I've played which does have a big blue cup somewhere in it.

I must say Tabby: Very clever of you to use the in-game cursor to point out where the cup is in the picture. Saves some time drawing a circle around it or whatever, and also doesn't mar the artwork.

I thought I'd mention this as a tip for future contributers...
Thanks for mentioning it, I hadn't really noticed it since it looked so natural. And knowing me, I would've just drawn a circle and wondered why it looked so out of place. (laugh)

Ah so close. But I'll let you have it. It's Dungeons 2 actually. It has very different gameplay to it's predecessor.

Your turn. :-D
