"Hallmarks of a genre" is pretty much the definition of a trope. The word "trope" is not a negative term or an insult (although "cliche" may be).
You're right, tropes aren't negative. As a matter of fact, they're practically unavoidable.
Cliches on the other hand are overused and should be avoided.

The main difference between the two is that tropes can be used in many different ways, even when they're very specific, and people generally won't grow tired of them.
Cliches on the other hand are usually things that were great the first time, but became groan inducing pretty quickly soon after.

If you experience a trope (for example, Zombies) for the hundredth time, you probably won't mind it, you might even like it.
But when you experience a cliche for the hundredth time (for example, the protagonist is actually unknowingly working for the bad guys), you will undoubtedly roll your eyes because you've seen it happen too many times.

I've just played Memories Fade, and what a lovely game it was. Kind of sad, but at the same time heartwarming.
And very nice presentation as well. I can see you put a lot more effort into your entry than I did with mine.

Everything about this game is awesome!

The graphics are charming, the sound effects are enchanting, and the time-travel puzzles are sweet, and one in particular quite nostalgic (even though the desired effect is the opposite of the original puzzle)...

Love this game! Now all it needs is a title screen and credits (oh and a save/load game function, but luckily you didn't disable f5 and f7...)

;)
I'm glad you loved it. :-D
I'll have to see about updating it after the MAGS contest to include those things.

It's a shame that Nixxon and Funkpanzer didn't get their entries in. They both looked really interesting, and Nixxon seemed to be making good progress. At least I've got Danvzare's entry to play and enjoy! :)
Agreed, I was really looking forward to playing both of those games. Especially Nixxon's.
It looked like they were making good progress as well.

Ah well. At least we've got each other's games. :-D

That is surely Robotrek.
That is correct. Great game. It took me a decade to finally get past the final boss.
Your turn.

I'm a native English speaker, and even I don't understand what that means. ???

But if I had to take a guess. I'd say that it's trying to say something along the lines of: things break and you may be left on your own as a result.

Hmmmph, two guesses in one, but I'll allow it. it is indeed Putty, the original and better-looking!
What are you talking about? Better looking?
Putty Squad looks the exact same!
Well, at least the original Putty Squad that came out several decades ago on the SNES. Not the modern remake. That one does look horrible.

Sorry about the two guesses in one. I knew it was one or the other, and it's been a long time since I've played either.

This one should be easy for anyone who has played it.

Putty Squad!
Or more likely, Putty. (The original game that came first.)
