The Rumpus Room / Re: The 4 word story thread

forum thread, long forgotten.

I've always hated Found Footage movies.

But with that being said, someone did recommend one to me once. It was called: Chronicle
It's not a Found Footage Horror movie, but it is a Found Footage movie. I was told it was very good.
Personally I couldn't watch more than five minutes of it, but that's just because of my preferences.

I remember there being a really terrible character sprite generator on here years ago. Let me just search for it... found it.
https://www.americangirlscouts.org/agsresources/AGS%20resources/Programs/WalkCycleGen.zip

Of course you could also just download all of the character sheets for Maniac Mansion Mania or Reality On The Norm, and then edit the sprites to your liking.
https://www.maniac-mansion-mania.com/index.php/en/
https://realityonthenorm.info/

But speaking from personal experience, I highly recommend learning to draw your own pixel art.
Yes, it is a chore having to draw everything, and yes, it does take several years to learn how to do it. But trust me, people do notice when the artwork isn't your own, and unfortunately it does carry with it negative connotations.

If you ever decide to learn how to draw pixel art, I recommend starting with learning how to draw traditionally first, by drawing with a pencil every day. (The skills from that, carry over to all other forms of drawing.) I found some comics that I liked the artstyle of, and copied-via-reference one of the panels everyday for several months. The next thing I knew, I was suddenly able to draw somewhat decent pixel art. It was... weird.  :-\
(Word of caution though, never trace when learning to draw, because you'll only get good at tracing if you trace and not at drawing! But if you want to rotoscope, then trace away.)

I'm very much a physical media kind of guy, which makes me a dinosaur, I suppose.  :-D
We're on a forum for a 20 year old game engine whose primary purpose is to make point and click adventure games.
We're all dinosaurs here.  (laugh)

To add to this.
I'm clearly in the minority here, but one of the main things I don't like about owning digital games. Is that at the end of the day, you could lose it and never get it back at a moment's notice. You could delete the game and the servers could get closed off, and then you'll never be able to play that game you bought, ever again. The most obvious example of this happening is the Nintendo Wii, but it's obvious that the PS3 will soon be on the chopping block (it already was not so long ago, before they delayed it due to backlash).
Meanwhile, you know you'll probably always be able to get a pirated copy again and again, since there's always someone who'll put it up.
When I feel as though I own a pirated copy, more than I own a legally purchased copy, then there's a problem.  (nod)

And don't get me started on the inability to sell off your digital games like you can with physical games. As well as the prices of digital games. Why do they seem to stay at the same price as when they released, and why is it considered normal to always wait until they go on sale? That's just messed up!  8-0
But I digress.

The greatest thing about discs and cartridges in my opinion though, is that you'll always be able to play the game, so long as you look after the media it's stored on and can find a working console for it (for disc-based games, you don't even need a working console, since a working emulator will usually do the job just fine). The fact that people are still able to play their NES games to this day, is testament to that fact.
Sure, you won't have access to those "Day 1 Mega Patches" and all of those "DLC Season Passes", but that's your fault for buying a buggy and crappy game. I've got plenty of modern games which are great with no updates, patches, or DLC. A good example is the recent remake Tony Hawk's ProSkater 1+2. I played the game from start to finish without updating it (no internet at the place I was playing it at, don't ask). I didn't have a single problem, and the whole game was there and playable, which sounds quite surprising for a AAA Activision game in my opinion. Same goes with Kingdom Hearts III (didn't update that because I found a cool exploit that I didn't want to find out if they had patched or not).

Unfortunately it's obvious that consoles are going to go completely discless. (After all, they already have discless versions of the consoles.)
I suspect the next generation of consoles to be completely discless. Except Nintendo, who as usual, will be behind the times. But they'll get to it either the generation after that, or the generation after that. :~(

The Rumpus Room / Re: What grinds my gears!
Sun 01/05/2022 12:20:02
It grinds my gears whenever someone who doesn't understand the appeal of a certain type of gameplay, decides that it's because that type of gameplay is now dated and a good example of bad game design, rather than because it's not to their taste.
Two really good examples are the inventory item puzzles on Adventure Games and the turn-based combat prevalent in JRPGs.
#367
Yeah, Babar's right. PC games don't have physical releases anymore, except in a few rare cases.
Console games still do, but who knows for how long. (They'll probably always be there as a sort of collector's item though, so I guess we'll see.)

I still see tons of DVDs of movies and TV shows being sold in shops though. And in my opinion, they usually outnumber the Blu-Ray releases by a huge margin. So DVDs aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Which I personally find odd. I thought they would've been outright replaced by Blu-Ray by now.

Looks like a Jet Set Willy clone, but I don't recognize the game.  ???

Is it The Evil Dead?

To keep this on topic: I hope the recent disappearance of Ron Gilbert's website isn't a bad omen. While I'm not won over by the new art, I hardly think it warrants a backlash.
Wait, what? People are throwing that much of a hissy-fit over the graphics!?
I mean, yeah, sure, I'm not a huge fan of the graphics either. But seriously? I thought everyone was just talking about it peacefully like we're doing here on this thread. (Looking at the website on the wayback machine, I can't see anything too heated. But then again, it only goes up to the 8th of April.)
After all, despite what anyone may think about the art style, it's not like it's "Sonic the Movie" levels of bad. It's definitely reasonable in my opinion.

But with all of that said, of course everyone's going to be talking about the graphics. The graphics are basically the only thing we know about the game at this point. There's really not much else TO discuss.
...
I really hope it isn't a bad omen as well. I'd hate to see a game get marred by developers who don't understand fan reactions.

I think it is simply vector art with bones, set up in a vector art animation program like what Ali suggested: something like Moho or Toonboom. Or it could be using the 2D functionalities of Blender too, I guess. I wouldn't really call it 3D.
I'm happy that it's a much better done iteration of the same style used in the Special editions. Would I have been happier with pixel art? Maybe. I never really cared for the CMI art (or feel, or voices, or story), so it doesn't bother me that they didn't go that way.

Yeah, that's probably the word i was looking for actually. Vector art.  :-D I don't care how it's done. Bottom line is, it's graphics 2d 3d or vector or whatever it is, looks bland. End of discussion.

Bland, yes. But having played through and completed Super Neptunia RPG, which really overuses that 2D Bone-Structure Vector Art animation style, I can safely say that it does grow on you. It's got a sort of charm to it. Then again, that could just be my nostalgia for Flash animation talking.

I think Guybrush on the Special Edition of Secret of Monkey Island was a 3D model that was rendered in 2D. It certainly looks like it to me. I'm not sure about the other characters, but he looked like it to me. Either way, he looked horrible in that game.  :-X
And don't get me started on the Broken Sword remakes. I couldn't even play the remakes of those two games because of that.  :-X

Still, I think we can all agree that we'd prefer proper traditional cel animation, in any form.
It's such a shame that the only modern day example I can think of where it's been done, is Cuphead.

AGS works on ScummVM, and I think ScummVM has a Wii port... so yeah, I think it should be feasible.
#373
While I'm not a huge fan of the graphics myself, I do feel as though people are being a bit too judgmental on them.
They're just graphics, and hey, they're not THAT bad. Just as long as we don't get creepy Guybrush like in the first special edition game, or bean shaped heads like every modern cartoon, then we should be fine.
#374
Well I'm British!  :-D
But I can't act, as clearly proven by my games (which I keep insisting on adding voice acting to for some reason).  :~(

I wish Dave good luck.

Just from looking at this, you can tell exactly when they dropped the mask mandate.
It looks about right to me. I'd be willing to bet that it would look the exact same with or without the mask mandate. But I guess we'll never know. (Personally, I'm of the opinion that keeping a 2-meter distance is more effective than reusing a single-use mask that's made to prevent the spread of bacteria during surgery, and that the masks simply made people relax on the whole distance thing. But that's just my humble opinion.)
I'd love to have some sort of graph to compare, where one country never implemented mask mandates, while another enforced it throughout the pandemic.  :-D

We're living in the dumbest timeline, but soon it won't matter anyway because we will not start reducing carbon emissions by 2025 so we'll all have got bigger problems soon anyway.
Now THAT is the real terrifying prospect!  8-0
What's worse, is that I'm pretty sure everyone is so greedy that they're actively making things worse while saying they're making it better. Public transport where I live has been slowly getting destroyed during the pandemic! Like seriously! Shouldn't we be investing in public transport! It's certainly a better alternative to electric cars I think, which they seem intent on pushing. I can't imagine the problems those will eventually create. Even if we produced all of our energy using nuclear salt-reactors (which we don't), there's still the problem with lithium.
The future is scary indeed. And that's just the transport systems. Don't get me started on the trend of leaving all of your electronics on at all times (turning off a modern console is hidden away behind several menus now), having electric billboards everywhere, putting everything in plastic bottles, etc.
I'm very worried for the future.
...
Sorry about that... I just had to get that off my chest.

Not all of these "old master returns to beloved franchise" projects are bad, but there are enough bad examples that I tend toward scepticism rather than optimism. Funny thing is I just recently played through MI1 and MI2 with a friend of mine. A lot still holds up nicely, though especially to non-native english speakers some of the puzzles can seem a bit confusing.
That skepticism is definitely well earned. I can think of many more bad examples than good ones. But I suppose I'm an optimist.  :-D

Also agreed, MI1 and MI2 do still hold up. I mean, I should know. I may have played CoMI back when it first came out, but I didn't get to play MI1 and MI2 until around 2008.
To think, there used to be a time when you couldn't play the games you wanted unless you were fortunate enough to find a store that stocked them. Such a privileged time we live in now.  :-D
(It didn't help that I didn't know an MI1 and MI2 even existed back when I played CoMI.  (laugh))

I feel pretty conflicted. The art style seems weird to me, and appears to take the style of the MI remakes and then exaggerate it even further.
Meh, as long as they don't draw the games in the CalArts style, I'm fine with however they decide to make it look. But maybe that's just me. As long as it's got a good story and good gameplay, it doesn't matter what it looks like to me.

Still, always curious to see what happens when the old guard steps back up to pick up where they left off. So far I can't recall a single case where this has succeeded so far... (Phoenix Point, Star Citizen, Peter Molyneux's entire existence, Double Fine for an alarmingly long time)
Well I mean, Thimbleweed Park was pretty decent, so there you go. A single case where that's succeeded.  :-D
And if you want a better case, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night only ever got praise.
If I sat here and thought about it long enough, I could probably come up with many more examples, especially if I included TV shows and movies.

Overall though, I think we need to keep things in perspective. This game isn't going to be as good as the Monkey Island games in our heads. It'll only be as good as the actual Monkey Island games. Because let's face it, we've probably all got rose-tinted glasses on over here.  (laugh)

I just configure it to look closer to AGS 2.7, since that's the first version I used. I leave everything else the same.  :-\

I honestly can't believe it's finally happening.
Is it going to be the next game in the overall series, or is it a game that takes place between the 2nd and 3rd game, or is it a partial reboot like some of those Halloween moves (particularly Halloween H20)?
Whatever the case, it should be in good hands with Devolver Digital.

I know CMI isn't a RG game, but I still feel it earned a place in the "proper" line-up. Escape from MI and Tales of MI I don't include in that.
Tales of Monkey Island was pretty decent! Sure it was simple in terms of puzzles. And the constantly reused character models was tiresome. But it was a fun game with a fun story. Definitely leagues better than Escape from Monkey Island.
Buuuuuuuuuuut if we're going to remove EMI from from the "proper" line-up, then of course you also have to remove TMI in the process, simply because it's a direct sequel to it.
CMI is an absolutely brilliant game though, and easily my favourite in the series, with MI2 taking a close second. (Sorry Ron.)
