I don't think that qualifies for this thread, because that's something that SHOULD unnerve you.  (laugh)

Alright first off, this is a biased opinion since I love dithering.
As such, I think number 3 looks the best. But, I know that some people absolutely detest dithering, so... take that with a pinch of salt.

As for the GUI. All I can suggest is looking at other games for inspiration.
You need to know many actions you are planning to have available to the player at any one time, before you can make a decision though.

Hear! Hear! Wham.  It is so nice to see that video gaming has really taken off over the last year. Far from being the bad influence, once thought, encouraging the
populus to get up to every unspeakable attrocity, it is now being recognised as a great stress reliever and a way to ward off altzeimers. An accolade rightly deserved  :)

*Picks up cane and starts waving it around like a madman.* Gaming died over a decade ago!

Ahem. Now I've gotten that out of my system. I honestly didn't realize gaming had taken off last year. I'm pretty sure games had become well-established mainstream nearly two decades ago (roughly around the time "AAA" became a common term). Did Covid really bring that many new people in?

Download it, install it, follow the tutorial in the help file or look one up online, attempt to make a short game (don't post it online), enter the MAGS contest and try to make a decent game in one month.
Good luck.

Again, that comes down to trying to prevent as many of their users as possible from making the wrong decision.  The problem is solved on page one of that thread, I'd assume the rest is people who believe what you do complaining about being made to do something slightly technical to get what they want.

Bear in mind though that Microsoft is an American company.  Not even Bill Gates can afford a million Americans suing him because he made is easy for them to compromise the integrity of their computer!
Hmm. I disagree. I wouldn't be surprised if they've claimed that's the reason. But I don't believe that is the actual reason. Especially as Cassie said, no one was ever sued before.
If I had to take a guess, I think it's because they want more control over their product.

Speaking of things that disturb me that shouldn't.
These things are at the top of that list:
I don't find the LoL dolls much worse than your average moe anime, but then again, I don't like the average anime face aesthetic much in general.
You're telling me that this (the most moe anime I know of):
[imgzoom]https://honeysanime.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/k-on-yui-hirasawa-00.jpg[/imgzoom]
is as disturbing as this:
[imgzoom]https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_4C3q1IwcRg/XNC-JxaZdhI/AAAAAAAJ-FI/TJ0VT2rZnj4SoZTfmVTGRLQd5zxhBp7oACLcBGAs/s1600/LOL-SURPRISE013.png[/imgzoom]

I mean now that you mention it, I can see a slight similarity. But I get the feeling like everyone else I've brought it up with, you're just blind to the sheer creepiness of it.
I like to call it "parent blindness", since it usually affects parents (but can affect any adult). As they can't see something as being creepy because it's for kids.
A really good example is the faces they used to make for the moons or clocks on old 70s and 80s kids shows. Those grinning smiles were terrifying! Yet no matter who I ever brought it up to, it was like they were completely blind to it! (Think Thomas the Tank Engine's face, but with a big creepy grin.)

The question is, why wouldn't you do that? You're supposed to keep Windows up-to-date, like any other app or OS.
Just turn on automatic updates.
I bothers me immensely when I'm just doing regular stuff, and then suddenly my computer demands to be restarted, with no other option.
Plus, I have to redo the removal of lots of the inbuilt windows spyware after every single update.
I've heard countless similar stories, but never had that problem myself, as I always set it up to download updates automatically but let me choose when to install them. Which essentially means the computer only updates when I turn it off.
As such I've literally never had Windows tell me it needs to restart. My anti-virus software has a few times, but never Windows itself.

Even without the new image I know what this show is now. I watched the pilot last night. I would have watched it sooner, but I didn't know of a place I had access to more than the first 2 episodes before.

So, I assume there are no Firefly fans...
I like Firefly. I wouldn't call myself a mega huge fan like someone else I know, but I definitely enjoyed it. I'm not sure how this is related to Firefly though, unless it's also made by Josh Whedon. Dollhouse perhaps?

In other words Teenage Mutant Ninja Birds. In that case their creepiness is intentional, but no matter what, they never match the creepiness of the Micheal Bay produced TMNT.
What's really worse, Michael Bay turtles or the live-action Sonic?
Definitely the original live-action Sonic.  (nod)
Unless we're comparing the Michael Bay turtles to the improved live-action Sonic, in which case the Michael Bay turtles is definitely the worst.  (nod)

Oh, if only...
But for every awful jock, there are just as many guys who think they are so much better than those jocks, yet still think they deserve a girlfriend who will bend over backward to curl for them anyway, and the quote I cited mentions several other types too;
It may be a slightly different version â€" maybe he’s a vegetarian, so Cool Girl loves seitan and is great with dogs; or maybe he’s a hipster artist, so Cool Girl is a tattooed, bespectacled nerd who loves comics.
I would absolutely love to get you in the same room as my sister. She'd probably turn your entire worldview upside down. (laugh)
For instance, look up Lady Death comics. That's what my sister likes. (nod)
And trust me, she does not give a crap about what any man thinks. She likes what she likes, because she likes them.

That being said, I think it's a little unfair that you changed the definition of "Cool Girl" to "Dream Girl". Of course nobody's "Dream Girl" exists, that's what the "Dream" part means. (roll)
But, there are a lot of people that do need to realize that. So your your point does stand.  (nod)
It just needs to be worded better.

This is a very extreme example, but I think this really showcases how it feels to a lot of women when a lot of guys will be so quick to say "oh sure it's awful, but it's only those kind of guys who do it and I'm obviously and visibly not that kind of guy".
I once had the misfortune to work in a place where there were a diverse set of men working, Swedes and immigrants from various nations, guys of all ages and with varied interests and levels of education, and they were all laughing along at the same sexist and homophobic jokes. There is no "magic bullet" that will make you immune to being a jerk, all you can do is just to keep being on your best behavior and be ready to call others out on it if you want to avoid being one.

Sorry if I'm going off on a tangent here, but this is something I've been thinking of for a while and think more people ought to consider.
"oh sure it's awful, but it's only those kind of guys who do it and I'm obviously and visibly not that kind of guy", well I'd hate to break it to you, but people like to defend themselves.
If someone called you one of those straw-man argument man-hating feminists, you would probably be quick to point out that those types of people are awful, but you're not one of those types of people.
Don't paint everyone with the same brush, and don't complain when someone tells you not to.
That being said, I am a little bit sexist and a little bit racist (I'm probably even a little bit homophobic). It's ingrained into me through cultural osmosis. You probably are too.  :-D The question is, are you more than me?
At least I'm willing to question that what I believe might be wrong. You on the other hand, based on what I've read on this thread, seem quite adamant that nothing you believe in is wrong.
You need to question yourself more, re-evaluate your beliefs, and most importantly, stop going to articles written by people who think the same way as you. Diversify and question things more!
That's why I love talk to you. You're my way of doing exactly that. :-D

Also, of course they were all laughing at the same sexist and homophobic jokes, it's called reading the room. Trust me, you don't want to be the one guy to point out that this joke (or comment) is sexist, homophobic, or racist, in the middle of a friendly conversation. You aren't going to change them, you're just going to piss them off, and probably even make them worse (I'm not kidding, it's a psychological effect that happens).
I mean sure, if it goes too far, step in, but otherwise keep your mouth shut.  (roll)
You don't stop that stuff by highlighting it every chance you get.

Also, as for "Nancy the Happy Whore and the Perfidious Petrol Station".
I've played it. Good game. The title is a bit off-putting, but the characters are quite lovable. Nancy's optimism is just so entertaining.  :-D
It's short though.

About the image itself, I think the problem with higher res for this style is that there is more empty space, and the lack of specific details creates a greater dissonance
That's what I love about making low-res pixel art. The lower the resolution, the easier it is to spot and correct mistakes, and the less detail you have to put in. You can even be more abstract, and get sizes and proportions completely wrong, and it'll still look fine.  :-D

Quote from: fire7side on Sun 28/02/2021 17:36:47
That's pretty much the problem with most things I do.  I just can't think of enough objects to put in there and the scenes look empty.
Well that's easy. First put in everything needed for the game, if it is for a game that is. All of the puzzle objects and characters. Then if it's still empty, just sit and think what would be in a location like that.
From your picture, I would say: trees, bushes, a welcome mat, graffiti, a sign, fire hydrant, a grate, a manhole cover, a drainage pipe, an open window, a parked car, tufts of grass, a pile of dirt, a wastebasket, a crack on the floor, a lamp post, a telephone pole, I could probably keep listing more stuff.
It's easy, you just have to sit and think for a moment.  ;-D

The expression on the doll to the right that I saw in a bargain bin some time ago unnerved me.

Don't you mean the one of the left? Or both?
The one on the right looks stoned, the one on the left looks like it's about to murder me.

I think this paragraph should be required reading for every man trying to write a female love interest, this sentence in particular;
Having read that paragraph, all I can say is that no guy wants a girl like that. Except those jocks who you always see playing the bully in 80s movies.  (laugh)

You are not dating a woman, you are dating a woman who has watched too many movies written by socially awkward men who’d like to believe that this kind of woman exists and might kiss them.
With a quote like that, I thought it was going to be about anime girls (I've heard similar things being said in lots of reviews for bad anime). Instead it's about "Cool Girls".  :-X
Which are obviously girls that only exist in the mind of a teenage frat boy. You know, the kind of guy everybody (and I do mean everybody) hates.  (roll)

As I said before, I think that the first game that could pass the test is Maniac Mansion.
I've thought about that since you said it the first time, and I honestly can't think of a moment in the game where two female characters speak to each other about something other than a man in Maniac Mansion.
There are four female characters in Maniac Mansion. Wendy, Razor, Edna, and Sandy.
There's no talk function, so Wendy and Razor can never talk to each other. (So that doesn't pass it.)
Edna will only talk to you when she captures you, where she then mentions that it's a good thing you're not a boy. (So that doesn't pass it either.)
And Razor will only talk to someone other than Dave, after you complete the game with Dave dead, where obviously she talks about dave. (So even that doesn't pass it.)
So seriously, where does Maniac Mansion pass the Bechdel test? Because I can't figure it out.  :-\

I still name Maus the scariest comic book I ever read. Because it was real.

Nothing scares me more than what is real. That is why I often say Brazil is the scariest movie I ever saw: each time I see it, it's a bit less science-fiction and a bit more like reality  8-0
Real stuff doesn't scare me, simply because since I'm always terrified of real stuff, when something actually goes out of it's way to remind me, I shrug it off because I've already built up a tolerance from my own irrational fears.
As such, the stuff that really scares me are weird psychological stuff, like The Twilight Zone. Stuff I've never thought about, and therefore could never have built up a tolerance against.
That being said, I don't really like anything involving ghosts. They're just so boring.  >:(

I've personally not read enough horror comics to suggest one which I would consider scary enough to suggest.
But a little off topic, the sweetest one definitely has to be Scud the Disposable Assassin, simply because of the beginning, the ending, and the real story behind the comic. Put it all together and you have in my opinion, the best romance story of all time.  :-D

I remember watching Alone in the Dark and really liking the movie. Many years later I learnt about Uwe Boll, and since I didn't remember anything about the movie, I was terrified of watching it again, in case I ended up hating it.   (laugh)

I still haven't watched it again.

I know this isn't a recent game by any means, but have you played the John DeFoe series?
You know, 5 Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, Trilby's Notes, and 6 Days a Sacrifice?

Since the community has been around tons of adventure games, I recently had the idea what it would be like to do interviews with the developers.

There are certainly many people in the community who would like to get involved.

It is a suggestion that I would find it exciting to read interviews with developers, programmers, graphic designers, sound designers and authors to learn about their backgrounds and working methods.

What do you think about that?

Many greetings

When it comes to my objection of using "females" as stand-in for "women, I'm not the first or only one to make this complaint. If you've watched a nature documentary in English, you'd see that they always refer to female animals as females and male ones as males
to distinguish the fact that they're talking about animals and not human persons. Here's a list of reasons not to use the word "female" as a noun. This isn't some random personal issue I made up on the spot.
Wow, this is the first time I've ever heard of this.
Let's look at that list...
The first is invalid, because English is a living language. For example, "figuratively" and "literally" mean different things, but they also mean the same thing as a result of English being a living language.
Upon reflection, the second one seems valid.
The third one is invalid. I don't think I've ever heard a group of women being called females, but I'm fairly sure I've heard a group of men being called males.
The fourth one sounds invalid to me. I've never heard "males" or "females" to imply inferiority or contempt. Sounds like a strawman argument.
The fifth one is definitely valid.  (nod)
The sixth one is also valid.

That all being said, I'll make sure to avoid using the word "females" to refer to women from now on. Not that I ever did in the first place.
Although personally this kind of reminds me of the time my dad got in trouble for using the word "yard" instead of "garden". I guess different words mean different things to different people.

Quote from: Blondbraid on Mon 15/02/2021 17:24:42
I don't get why you think I'm not allowing you to use the word "female" as a descriptor, using descriptions like female posters is fine, it's using female as a noun that's the problem, it's basic grammar.

It's like the difference between saying "a black person", and referring to all black people as "blacks". Why do you find this hard to understand?
It feels like I have to explain everything twice to you.
In my experience it's more offensive to say "a black person" than to say "blacks".
And to add to that, I would personally find it offensive if someone used "male" as a descriptor for me, and used a description such as a "male poster".
Cultural difference perhaps?  ???

I hope nothing I've said offends you. I'm just trying to add to the conversation.
