If you could breathe new life into Maddog Williams, that would be really cool. I guess part of its charm is its dated indie spirit, but it had a cool premise and pacing and the puzzles were pretty good.
+1  (nod)
I remember playing that game years ago, and barely being able to get anywhere in it.
I could probably complete it now, considering I have the internet and walkthroughs.

“Track and Trace”

NO! It’s not called Track-and-Bloody-Trace! It’s “Test and Trace”! A different thing entirely. If one more IDIOT calls it Track and Trace, unless you’ve just entered a 12-digit string into a box on the Royal Mail website, I swear I’m going to go postal.

If you think I'm going to start calling it "Test and Trace", then you've got another think coming.
...
Get it?
I just referred to my own somewhat related pet-peeve while talking about Stupot's.  :-D
...
Ok, forget it. I don't think anyone is going to get it.  :~(

Also, what is test and trace?
I only know about the whole 12-digit thing that you put into the Royal Mail website. Then again, I don't send and receive many packages, so...  :-\

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Clock Tower series yet.

Also this is your fault for not doing a good job as the Hog keeper. It's kinda suspect that just after you stopped feeding it we all got caught into this

OMG You literally saw me feed her! There's been another couple of dozen marks on my tally wall since then!

She is so big now her sides are pressing up against the walls of the bunker. I can only get to 3-4 teats for my own feeding! Her stomach is bulging so much... I wonder if she's pregnant somehow... I didn't think that was possible so I didn't wear protection. Oh dear... I smell a sequel brewing!!!

What the heck did I just walk in on!  8-0

"Indie" is covered by itch, gamejolt, and the like.
Ok, so it's only going to have adventure games, no indie games in general. Brilliant. But... define adventure game.
You see, what VampireWombat said got me thinking about a recent discussion on this forum, which in turn brought me to this question. How will you ensure only adventure games go on, and what if your definition of an adventure game clashes with someone elses?

For example, Zork is definitely an adventure game, so is Monkey Island and Myst. But what about Dizzy? Dizzy seems like an adventure game to me, but others might just call it a platformer.
And that's just old games, what if we look to more modern games. A lot of hidden object games on Big Fish Games are very similar to Myst, but they're classified as hidden object games.
What about Telltale's The Walking Dead? Most people would call that an adventure game, and even I would call it that. But Telltale's The Walking Dead has a lot in common with visual novels, so are visual novels allowed? I can definitely see visual novels being put into the same group as adventure games, but others might disagree.

But what about the fact that Action Adventure has become the miscellaneous category for video games. Spider Man for the PS4 is an action adventure game, but I would never in my life consider it an adventure game. It's got more in common with platformers and beat-em-ups than the adventure genre.

Do you see the problem?
You're going to need a strict definition with some examples to back it up. And that won't be easy.  :-\

It looks alright to me.
Then again, I play Dwarf Fortress, so I'm probably not the best judge for UI design.  (laugh)

I like the idea. But I'm not sure if it would work, for the reasons others have listed.
For the record though, I'd be interested.

General Discussion / Re: Learning Python

Hi everybody.

I'm thinking of dipping my toes in the fantabulous world of Python, but there are so many online tutorials, courses, introductions and books out there that I'm overwhelmed by choice and don't even know where to start.

Could anybody recommend a good starting point? I'm a very hands-on learner, so I would definitely prefer tutorials that give you stuff to do with what you've learned.

In case this helps, I would like to focus eventually (when and if I achieve certain proficiency) on QA testing automation. I guess this is not really relevant right now that I'm just starting off, but maybe it can help determine what I should focus on the most.

Thanks in advance! :)

EDIT: Couple more questions: Python 2 or 3? And which IDE would be best to start with?
I'm not sure how much help this will be to you, but I learnt python by just getting a book called "Learn Python the Hard Way", then I went through the whole book.
Most of it is just you copying the code he wrote directly into a file using notepad++, with a little bit of explanation about what you just did. But as someone who already knows the basics of programming, I felt as though it learnt me a lot (also, it helped that it was structued in a way that I learnt how to program to begin with). I now use Python to quickly program any tiny things that I need. It's a brilliant language for prototyping.
I think there's a new edition that's for Python 3 as well.

P.S. I opened the downloaded PDF in Microsoft Edge, don't know if it's important, though.
I used Google Chrome, so yeah, that's probably got something to do with it.
For some reason, Google Chrome must be using some sort of buggy OCR that's getting the letters completely wrong.

Michael,
in case you are still interested in playing the game
I tried to put myself into your situation and this is how I solved it:
Downlod the PDF and go to Episode 100
1) mark the text witch your mouse and copy it to the clipboard
2) open Google and search german - english
3) Copy the contents of the clipboard into the window for german text
4) Copy the contents of the english window into the clipboard
5) Save the contents of the clipboard into a text file using Notepad or another Editor

It was easy

In my experience, what you get when you do that is:
K>= NG= !=G: DHFF>G G:<A >BG>K F>AKP\<AB@>G 1KE:N;LK>BL> G:<A $:NL>
GNK NF ?>LMSNLM>EE>G    =:LL != =:L $:NL O>KD:N?M A:M NF =>G !=L>E SN K>I:KB>

K>G B> !=BLHGL ;K:N<A>G :ELH #>E= +GD>E !=>G>S>K A:M @>GN@ =:OHG ELH
O>KLN<A>G =B> E:N>G BAK #E]<D NG= O>KLN<A>G OHG !=>G>S>K #>E= SN ;>DHF

F>G

And that's the first paragraph of page 129.
I don't think Google Translate can translate that.  (laugh)

If you have a character that touches the ground, to avoid moonwalking/gliding, you need to turn it on
In my experience, if you're getting gliding with it off, you either need more animation frames or have the animation play a lot quicker.
If you do it right, it gives a very smooth look that I very much prefer to the almost sickening jumpiness most games get when it's on.  :-X

But Nikujaga doesn't want smoothness.
In which case MovementLinkedToAnimation should definitely be on. And you'll want AnimationDelay to be higher than 0, so the jumps between frames seem sporadic. You'll also want AnimationSpeed to be at a pretty high value, so that you can get some really jarring leaps (it'll make you feel nauseous if the room is a scrolling room, but if that's what you want).
Just experiment with high and low values between them until you get something similar to what you want.
But that's just how it works in AGS. How to mimic it in Godot should be as simple as having the sprite only move when its frame changes (based on AnimationDelay) and having it move a specific amount of pixels (based on AnimationSpeed). At least, that's my two cents.

It sounds like your describing an IDE more suited to a professional development environment, rather than what AGS is, and always has been, to a lot of it's users: a simple, all-in-one, hobbyist tool.

But I'm no software engineer.
It kind of sounds like that to me too.
I think first and foremost, AGS should cater to the hobbyist over the professional. Sure, it's preferable to cater to both whenever possible. But if one has to be chosen over the other, the hobbyist should come first.

I'm not sure I'm explaining my point very clearly. I guess I could say that it feels odd to me that there's this very particular strain of adventure games that have remained mechanically and structurally unchanged since the early 90s, and that strain makes up a significant portion of "adventure games" as a whole.
Because there's an audience for them.
And the only reason they appear to make up a significant portion of adventure games as a whole to you, is because you're a part of that audience.
In actual reality, they make up quite a small portion. That's like saying old fashioned Doom mods make up the majority of the FPS genre. Which you would probably think if you really got into the Doom mod scene (it's very active).
Trust me, things always seem more popular when you're part of the group that's really into it.

Sounds interesting.
Where could I get the resources to make my own if I wanted to?

I checked the template and it indeed doesn't have any savegame functionality. No GUIs, no keyboard commands, nothing.
No idea how that happened. Looks like the VerbCoin template remains cursed :-D
What? Really?  8-0
Holy crap, it looks like Babar was onto something.

One of these days I'm going to have to try and design what I consider the best possible VerbCoin template. One with savegame functionality.  (laugh)
