there's also a lot of people that hate MediaFire and they're popup adds.

Yes. Mediafire is the best way to make your game look unprofessional.

Any suggestions for better file hosting sites?
Google Drive perhaps?
Dropbox maybe?

The Channel Awesome one is more complicated than being able to give a quick explanation. As for being recent? The major fallout from it happened over a year ago. Maternity leave might have been a part of it, but I don't remember. There was a Google document released with a lot of complaints about treatment of those who made videos for CA. And CA basically responded with "We're sorry you feel that way." The document contained information ranging from treatment at crossover events, how Lupa got kicked off the site, all the way to cover ups about sexual harassment and a certain sexual predator who ended up committing suicide...
If you want a longer explanation, there's a movie length documentary on Youtube called The Downfall of Channel Awesome.
Thank you so very VERY much!  :-D
This is the kind of thing I looked for but could never find.
And that explanation was brilliant. Thank you.  (nod)

Also, sorry everyone for getting things off-topic.

And since this topic is also about narrative-focused adventures. I think it's only fitting to bring up the format that Telltale games popularized. Which let's face it, are just 3D visual novels.

As far as I see, it was 3-D pulp fiction for the mass market. This kind of works as long as it is printed on really cheap pulp paper and as long as you avoid anything which would make expensive glossy high-quality paper a necessity. And originally, Telltale did exactly that. They were successful in the same way that the doctor and dime novels of the 1950s were successful. Then they started adding features that their pulp paper (game engine) couldn't sutain; thus they were forced to improve their pulp and switch to a better printing technology. And they promptly went bust on the added expenses.

That's the Telltale story in a nutshell, as I see it.
I couldn't agree more.

Although I think another perspective of the Telltale story, is that they got lucky with one game (The Walking Dead), and expected all future games to sell as well as that game. And so expanded their company to accommodate it. Long story short, that one lucky game was the exception in terms of profit, not the rule. And they couldn't sustain the expanded company.

Now I await for someone to respond with yet another perspective on the downfall of Telltale.  :-D

Oops. Looks like I hit a sore spot in my previous post. Sorry about that.
But I stand by what I said, and this thread pretty much proves it. When it comes down to severe and spontaneous outrage, the bias alone can make it impossible to distinguish between what's real information and what's misinformation. Making searching an impossible chore. A good example is the recent controversy surrounding Pokemon Sword and Shield. Thankfully there was a nice video I found that explained it all objectively.

Also, I would like to add, that I still don't know what the Fez 2 controversy is about. (Apparently he said something, but I don't know what.)
Or the Channel Awesome controversy that happened recently. (I think it has something to do with maternity leave, but I'm not sure.)
Could I also have quick explanations for those as well. Pretty please.  :-D

Because seriously, this whole not-knowing thing, really does grind my gears!
You lot may be part of the hive-mind, but I've yet to be assimilated. So I need things explaining to me.
(It also grinds my gears slightly, how negatively everyone here reacted to me not liking not-knowing. But that's exactly why I didn't know in the first place.)

By the way, thanks Blondbraid for the video. I'll watch that now.

Funnily enough, I've given this a ridiculous amount of thought ever since I first saw that funny fictional feature all those years ago.
I've thought about how you could even implement such a thing in AGS itself. How you could "generate" characters and locations, using a set of pre-made graphics.
How you could "generate" puzzles based on a set of pre-made puzzles, with possible "connections" to other puzzles. So the game can slot puzzles in depending on what puzzles its chosen, a bit like how you can connect up different parts to your computer depending on other parts (like your motherboard).
There could even be small variations in certain items, to allow different connections to be made.

And then I start thinking about how randomly-generated adventure games, could be implemented as a feature in a single adventure game, rather than broadly as an adventure game maker. An adventure game that you can play again straight after completing it, and it still be fun, because the game is slightly or perhaps entirely different.

To say from my side, if I click a game on the AGS DB and it takes me to GameJolt I just close the site, cause GameJolt doesn't work on my browser.  (roll) So I either check for a mirror, aks for a mirror or give up downloading the game.
Have no problem with Itch.io site.
Recently I've tried to make GameJolt the main download for my games, and Itch.io the mirror. But with you saying this, I wonder how many people just don't bother with the mirror.
I wonder which site would make the better main download.
I also wonder if it would just be better to upload the game to MediaFire or something, and use that as the main download.

AGS Games in Production / Re: Strangeland

Whoa, is that really in AGS?  8-0
Dayum, that's some good artwork there, and a brilliant use of the engine.

Walking Simulator is a good genre, but 99% of the games in that genre are complete and total trash.
I can only name two decent walking simulators. The very first walking simulator that predates the genre "LSD Dream Emulator" and of course the game that popularized the genre "The Stanley Parable". There are no doubt more decent walking simulators than that, but these two games highlight that a Walking Simulator can be done right.
Almost all Walking Simulators forget to include gameplay in their so-called games.
And a game without gameplay, is like a movie without pictures. It's not technically what you're trying to call it.

And since this topic is also about narrative-focused adventures. I think it's only fitting to bring up the format that Telltale games popularized. Which let's face it, are just 3D visual novels. Except traditional visual novels are generally done better, yet never get the same level of recognition.

The Rumpus Room / Re: What grinds my gears!
Wed 31/07/2019 13:46:39
It grinds my gears, that when a huge controversy pops up out of nowhere, and a bunch of people are suddenly knee-deep in outrage. You sometimes can't find out why because everyone either completely avoids the details of the topic at hand (for example: "I can't believe he did that! I'm never buying Fez 2 from that asshole!"), or there's two sides that both hate each other without explaining the difference between the sides (for example: "Anyone who is pro-gamergate is dead to me!").

To this day, I have no idea what gamergate was about. And when I made a comic about it, asking people. Everyone commented saying that they also didn't know!  (laugh)

Perfect!  :-D
While there's always room for improvement, I personally can't find anything to point out.
Onto the next sprite I think.  (nod)

Thanks both!

Shrunk his hand slightly. Redid the arm, still not 100% happy with it but it'll have to do. Shaded him slightly, doh! Gave him buttons on his shirt. (Reminds me of those kung fu tops!)
I also made his top slightly brighter.

UPDATE:

I realised if I remove the dark outline from his left arm to where it joins the body, it looks like it's part of his body now and not an extra limb growing out of him. Phew.
Apart from the buttons on his shirt making him look like he's wearing one of those Kung Fu tops (or a shirt with a lot of stitching in the center), it looks brilliant.
I recommend reducing the number of button to around 6-8. And instead of making them crosses, try making them grey dots. Throw in a collar, and boom, you'll be done.

Sure, in the end it's the moderators' call, of course. I already explained that I feel that sometimes opening a whole new thread for a quick, silly question doesn't feel appropriate (to me at least), but if moderators don't like the idea of this thread existing, feel free to nuke it or whatever!
Of course it doesn't feel appropriate. That's why there's a search function.  :-D
Every single question you could ever ask (especially the quick and silly ones), has already been asked at least twice already (usually more). It's only a matter of searching for it. Unless you're too lazy or frustrated to search for it, like I was once.  :-[

It looks nice. If you're going for a DotT look, then you'll probably want to make his head bigger.
Also his right hand (the hand we can see clearly) looks a bit big.
Lastly, his face has way more detail than any other part, and it looks a bit odd as a result.

(Off topic but, Fantastic Beasts has the same issue for me. I really, really hoped it was simply going to be a series about a guy who goes around meeting and dealing with different beasts in each movie and that there would be no "Voldermort" this time around. But, no, they had to have a cut-rate Voldermort AND it had to be Depp, who annoys the crap out of me. I had to pass on the second movie.)
It's a damn good thing you passed on that second movie. It was HORRIBLE!
It retconned things from the previous film with no explanation, most of the characters acted completely differently, nothing made any sense, and that's just the tip of the iceburg!
There's this running plot throughout the film which leads absolutely nowhere. Everyone ends up in this same place where this big event is happening, and I still have no idea how or why. And the character who CAN READ MINDS falls for the bad guy's evil plot, and abandons the person she loves to die so she can potentially marry him in the future (which makes no sense on every single level). It is absolutely terrible!
Even Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is less confusing than this movie.

At least the first film is good though.  :-D

Then at the end of the dream I was trying to get home on time for my exam. Which was also weird because I already graduated earlier this month.
It's been years since I've had any formal education, and those dreams don't stop  :=
I have never, in all of my life, had a dream involving any kind of education. School, college, ect.
I have had a LOT of dreams which are basically just games though.  (laugh)
Some of which were actually in pixel art as well. I've even had low poly 3D. And I'm not playing the games, it's more like as the dreamer, I'm watching it as a movie. Only it's a game, with game logic.
And don't get me started on the dreams which have the false memories of me having (played?) these games before, only for me to wake up and realize I've never had a dream like that before... or have I?

Quote from: KyriakosCH on Sun 14/07/2019 05:23:10
I like dreams, but I used to be a lot more interested in them and actively examining them. It is a different world beneath the surface of consciousness, cause one isn't defined by being social there (so in many ways it isn't about being human either; more about being a mental entity inside your own mental realm).
I usually find that I can figure out exactly how my dream came together and what it's about, based on how my mind works, and how I can drift from one subject to another.
The logic is usually consistent with my own thought-patterns and associations. Something which I'm acutely aware of, since it's my brain.

Cheers for that! At the worst I'm just not being funny and I can live with that.

Sorry if I sounded disheartening. I didn't mean it that way.

I never even started on the DC extended universe, except for Wonder Woman because I heard it was good.
Same here. That was until a few weeks ago when I watched Shazam. That was a brilliant film, I'd highly recommend it.

I'd say, now with Avengers done, the interest in the superhero genre will slowly start to fade and, 10-20 years from now, people will be asking "what was up in the twenty-teens? Why was everyone so obsessed with superhero movies?" just like we look back on the alien invasion boom around the turn of the millennium.
I agree. It's only a matter of time.
I doubt people will look back at it and say "Wow, that was weird". Mostly, because I don't have that reaction when I look at the movie trends of the past. People will definitely point out just how many films there are for a single franchise though.  (nod)

Full marks for can creativity. Please tell me it didn't actually taste like marshmallow?
No, it tasted nothing like marshmallow. If anything, that would've been an improvement.
I would love to describe the taste, but alas, I'm terrible when it comes to describing the taste of alcohol, since they all taste the same to me.
Thankfully my sister also had a sip before I binned it, and she does like alcohol, her description of it is: "F***ing terrible! It was bitter and strong, and had a 'gone off' taste. And it tasted like it was burnt or something."

Safes or password protected computers with a nearby calendar with a date circled or a photograph with a date on the back (almost every single Wadjet Eye Game  := )
You know, for a while I've had an idea for a new take on that old puzzle.
You see, a lot of games have a safe that you character owns, but forgot the password of. And you naturally have to find the password. But what if any password you put in works, because since it's your safe, YOU should know the password. And therefore the first password you put in, the game saves for later use. Perhaps even reusing it when you need to open the safe at a later date.
You could even have a hint like the character saying: "Now what was the password again? Oh yes, now I remember!"
