I didn't expect thins kind of thing to crop up at all.

Ultimately though, I feel like a contest labeled as "sprite jam", sprite being the operative word, is a pixel-art contest. I don't think I've ever seen something referred to as a sprite being anything else. So ill go with that.

Does this include anti-aliasing?

that would technically be adding more colours. I would suggest using dithering, like Exsecratus did.

Lets get another one of these going.

The topic is 'Fantasy Creature', this could be anything as long as its not something we find around us in the real world. It could be something from your own imagination or something from, say, a film or book.

Pixel artists: You can only use 6 colours (not counting black, white or the background alpha-colour), this also includes shading colours.

Digital painters: You can use 6 base-colours (not counting black, white or the background alpha-colour), as with pixel art, shadows and highlights should be accounted for in the base-palette.

bonus points for colourfull creatures!

Final note then, remember that this is supposed to be something usable as an asset in an AGS game.

A mission to Jupiter

"Space, we all float in it...", this is how former Captain Henry Jamla begins the first and only chapter of his biography and final report on the progress of leading the first manned mission to explore Jupiter and its moons. It goes on to read; "...and our ignorance will never exceed our curiosity, because of this, we are now lost."

The pretentious nature of Captain Jamla's writing style was relatively well known ever since he tired to publish a book of poems back in 2098. because when no publisher wanted it he gave out free copies to anyone who worked under him, saying, and I quote "just in chase you know somebody". A strange man indeed but between his bad attempts at poetry he tells us what happened to him and his crew of 120 men.

"Yes, I am afraid i will be forever lost in this empty vacuum, because now I am fully certain that i am the only one left. The entire crew is gone, and I have been locked in this room for 36 days."

"When everyone goes crazy can you define anything by rational means?" The captains writing became hard to read in the following sentence, but it could have been either "Lieless underground dog-men" or "Lifeless by ground, god & men", regardless it doesn't seem to make allot of sense, this is followed by; "because I have seen good men become killers and lepers."

"The first man who died was a field researcher who came back with a cold, it started to infect the entire medical staff, before it suddenly disappeared, you must all know, to never go near this horrid gas-giant. for it will devour you."
By disappeared I assume that he means that this disease he refers to in this text seemed to heal temporarily.

"Then the nurses and doctors became crazed, killing and eating everyone, but they didn't have allot left in their well of life, as their bodies fell into pieces.", probably refers to the aforementioned leprosy.

"This text is all i will leave behind, for you must all know the fury of the eye, and to never stare directly into it, that researcher did not, and now, we are all dead..."

"It ends there sir."

"Not very long..." Dr. Gordon replied, "It certainly strengthens the case against him."

"I figured as much sir, he was acting strange towards the end but we all figured it was cabin-fever."

"It could still be that, just a very severe chase, but most likely we are looking at a permanent psychosis, especially considering what you just told me."

"I must return to my duties Doctor." I said as I handed the notes to Dr. Gordon. "Kind of freaky though isn't it", i inquired.

"Try not to think like that, it might have you end up like Mr. Jamla" The doctor said with a grin. "With only three months left before we might actually be orbiting Callisto, it is a little eery though, i must say."

"I'm guessing we try to keep the specifics from the general crew then Doctor."

"Yes, it would just cause unnecessary stress."

"Very well sir. I suppose i will see you later."

"Have a good day", the doctor said as the door closed between us.

In the back of my head i find it hard to ignore what Mr. Jamla wrote, however bad it was and no matter how insane he got i cant help but realize that we don't know what we might find so far out in space with our blue-eyed curiosity.

Since ive never made an ags game before i got a bit stuck on a few things. funnily enough it was mostly art-related.

ill attempt to finish it sometime though. the story is fully written and ive got it all figured out. i just need the art and programming done.

keep an eye out, ill see about fixing it together.

i would suggest playing Trilby's Notes. there is a room very early in the game that uses periodical lightning to light up a dark room, probably similar to what you want to do. basically what you want is to outline the furniture in a very dark blue. simple one-tone shading would do for that.

so this one is probably more wierd i suppose, depends on who you are, its a fetus soup.

like this one here. I should add that you probably shouldn't click it if you don't want to see a cooked fetus.

to define what weird food is you kind of have to take it to a personal level, someone might find hotdogs weird. its mangled meat in some kind of gut sleeve after all.

Colourball is now over!

and here are the prizes:

1 - Jim Reed
I like the way you used the shape, letting it deform your drawing the the gooey center of colorballing.

2 - NsMn
It feels like you didn't quite know how to fill the shape, but i do really like how you shaded the head at the bottom with the glossy highlights. Even if it ultimately didn't blend to well with the level of detail outside of the head (the actual tablet i believe).

3 - Dualnames
You did heavily break the rules but thats why we have them right? Still i like what you did with the shape so i will give you the honorary 3rd place and a wonky trophy.

So thats it, Jim Reed is now forced to host yet another competition, good luck.
#196
Not a submission but i felt like doing something with the shape.

there it is:

this ends tomorrow so get your entires in if you have them.

great turnout so far.

Site & Forum Reports / Re: New AGS Website

Its food for thought, im entertaining the idea and ultimately perhaps ill change my mind. Its nothing i feel very strongly about either but i liked the notion and wanted to project it.

It might be considered elitist but really im just saying that there are people attracted to flash like magpies and having a barrier would save it from instant-gratification types.

Its also the idea that the barrier has upped the class for this forum, allot of good people are here but perhaps im wrong there too, perhaps people of a certain type are drawn to the simple notion of creating and playing adventure games. if that is true then barrier or not, nothing will change.

but like i said, its food for thought mainly.

Site & Forum Reports / Re: New AGS Website

Id like to just bring up an idea regarding this endeavor.

I can understand wanting the site to be more accessible and perhaps cleaner in its design. It makes AGS easier for people to understand and pick up. It will bring many new developers and most likely the active mass of forum members will increase.

There is a problem in that, bear with me on this.

Now, the current site is not very user-friendly. Meaning that in most chases it takes a bit of determination to get the software and understand how it works. Mostly the site feels dated and the forums are not very highlighted. I read many tutorials before i even knew about the forums and when i found them i didn't really get involved for along time.

I know that all of that sounds like its a problem that has to be fixed, but really, it weeds out the people who might not be serious about it, people looking for a quick way to make a game for instance. As the forums are also slightly difficult to get into it tends to draw the more serious people.

Id like to suggest that the poor design of the site has made the community what it is now, and opening the floodgates might ultimately lower the quality for these forums and the games created.
