I checked out the concept art page here: http://www.slxgames.com/consept.html

That's some beautiful work you've done. Its especially interesting to me at the moment since I'm trying for the first time to take art more seriously. And finding concept art that I like and find useful has been a bit tricky. I know about conceptart.org and there are a few concept artist I find inspirational except from you (I adore Keith Thompson quite a bit), but there's something about your art that makes sense to me technically lets say, and I like finding artist like that.

I though I would end up regretting posting the game here most of all. In reality this is the only place where posting about them game was actually helpful.

I really appreciate all your comments and I do agree with everything that's been said here. The game was developed poorly and on the fly. Because of that I shouldn't be surprised at its reception. The real thing I can take away from this whole effort is that I really need to plan games more thoroughly in the future.
I was trying to build a game around whatever mechanics I could put into the protagonist and because of that the levels didn't get designed ahead of time and the game as a whole kind of fell apart.
There is also a very flawed interaction between the player and the enemies but at this point I really can't be bothered fixing it, although I think I know the problem, id rather move on.

General Discussion / Non-Ags game, KRAKATORA

So this may be odd. since making rein I didn't get any good ideas for adventure games so I started looking into other things. I came across the kongregate unity game-making contest and decided to make one, and it's now complete.

Would be nice to get some feedback on it.

this text on the site;

"This site contains sexually explicit, adult oriented material and links to sexually explicit, adult oriented sites. If you are under 18 years of age, offended by adult material, or if it is illegal to view sexually explicit adult material in your community, please leave now. "

should probably be BEFORE, the dickpics, but whatever.

Sweet presentation sir! seems I got some nominations for rein as well, like best short game and eh, something else. needless to say I'm fairly exited.

Selling adventure games seems like a fickle thing, and I honestly don't think that McCarthy could pull it off.

I really wish I had reasonable arguments beyond personal taste to fortify my position here but I don't, it's just based on my experience playing the first game, that if I did buy it I'd like my money back. That's not saying it's a bad game it just did well by being free, and while I know this is about the future McCarthy, its still be relevant since part one will be selling part 2 to a large degree.

I felt compelled to give my somewhat negative disposition, seems to be allot of irreverent positivity towards this so far. Take it with a grain of salt though, I can't even comprehend why the blackwell series sells at all.

Selling games is really an interesting theoretical topic I've been looking into myself for some time. There are a few interesting theories to consider;

Selling an indie game corresponds directly to the law of demand, meaning that there is a strong link between price and demand. lower price, higher demand and vice-versa. Although you can't fully consider it an item without competition, I don't think that any indie game is in any direct competition with other indie games since they are all unique experiences. I believe that there is certainly a price point to the relevance of competition however so if you plan to sell for retail-studio-prices you might have some trouble. The law of demand does rely on having one price however, not something buyer-determined.

The other interesting theory is that if someone is ready to take out their credit card and go through with buying a game for say $5, you might as well have asked for $10 because buying the game is not so mush about price as it is about actually going through with the purchase itself. I think that  $10 or £10 is the limit here though. food for thought non-the-less.

If you where to do this as a pay-what-you-want deal, you need some real exposure, you arguably have it now but a stable price would probably be the better choice since you haven't sold any games yet. It worked for world of goo because they didn't have anything to loose and they also have a large audience. It works for the indie bundle because they get allot of exposure through charities.
The other interesting thing about selling a game for a low price is that the lower you go the less people will care about their purchase, this is irrelevant when it comes to making a profit because of the law of demand, but you might want to consider it.

Finally, if anyone could sell an AGS game I think you can. The game as it stands now is pretty good, amazing for this forum, as an adventure game it is extraordinarily capable. It's a good adventure game, it's immersive and I would pay to play it.

I would like to add that a 1+2 deal doesn't sound like a good idea. Because if you manage to sell part 1 well enough it could potentially have you working full-time on part 2.

I'd recommend you have it proof-read by a native English reader (not me, obviously :D) for version 1.1.

That's really funny. I thought the same thing.... turns out he's actually from the states.

still playing the game, ill get back on some critique later-on.

EDIT: removed

Screw it.

This is just atrocious. Not only is this horribly misplaced, its not even a basic tech-demo. It would be annoying enough to see this is the work in progress section so the mere fact that you posted where you did only does you a disservice.

It's been said so many times but for god's sake at least make something that works, ignore that urge to release and 'just see what happens' crap and actually make something. You cant possibly think that this is worth showing on any level.

Get the hell out of here and make a god-damned game already!

Is there any plan of action in place if a host forgets the competition for a week?

Niiiiice. Any idea's on what it is? =P
I'm going with mutated squid-human hybrid.

by now you've probably read my actual description on what it is but I kind of like your idea. It actually would make a bit more sense I think, especially with how I decided to color it in the end, there's not not allot there that says piranha, except the teeth I suppose.

Features include;

  • Immersive storyline
  • Beautifully scored
  • Lushly illustrated graphics
  • Fully voiced, engaging characters
  • Fluid animations
  • Intricate game world filled with curiosities

While I find this list boasting and thus insidious, it is hard to not find the visuals greatly appealing.

I remain cautiusly intrigued.

and I'm done!

I'll vote for Oddysseus. It was a bit flowery, but the concept was pretty good.
#119
The outline just had allot of anti-alias going on that I felt was unnecessary, so I refined it by just cleaning up the lines.
#120
I don't think it will be too difficult, but the shape needs some refinement:

Since this is a bigger shape, i will do a progress thing... so far, this:

update1: Some basic shading to get an idea of what I'm making.
update2: Started the coloring process a bit.
update3: More coloring, especially the intestines.
update4: COMPLETE, more details, some refinement to the shading, and teeth.

SO WHAT IS IT?!
A mistake that's what! While trying to clone a cross-breed of piranha and human this was the outcome. It became known, as mistake #13. Will they ever succeed? let's hope not.
