I don't know, because I've never been a big business, and I would guess neither have you. As I said, I wouldn't steal anything from amateur game developers, but most of us have stolen SOMETHING from, say, Sierra or LucasArts and put it in our game, whether it be an icon, character sprite, or a fangame (*ahem* Tierra).

But you're right, as an amateur game developer, I concede that I wouldn't be thrilled if someone stole my stuff, but I certainly wouldn't take legal action against that person.

How can we go sixty posts without mentioning the turd that is "A Fork in the Tale?" First person FMV... Rob Schneider... need I say more?

But if Monty Python humor is what you're looking for, check out "Blazing Dragons," one of the funniest games I've ever played. Even though it's for Saturn and Playstation, it's still a load of fun to play.

I wasn't aware there was an international standard for copyright laws. Don't you think they'd be a little less enforced for amateur game development, though? Also, I though that once you write something, as long as it's original, that it's copyrighted. You don't even have to register it. That's what I thought anyway.

By the way, at what point does the cup boil over?

You're right, rodekill. That's my whole point. I will take the fall for my own actions. I honestly don't think that people another world away are concerned with me getting sued.

Mills, no offense, but are you really going to sue me if, say, I use a plugin of yours without giving you credit. You could try, but I'm sorry, it's not going to pass in court. The judge wouldn't even hear such a case. Lawsuits like this won't work for another, say, twenty years.

Let me make myself clear: I WOULD give someone credit, regardless, for whatever I put in my game. I'm simply making the five-year-old point that "You're not the boss of me! You can't make me!" Take it or leave it. I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm just pontificating.

Let me also make clear, the chances of me making a fan game, the chances of me making a good fan game, and the chances of me making a fan game so good that it takes away from (in this case Sierra's) profit it so slim it's not even funny. I'm flattered though. :)

I totally agree about the Disney sequel thing, though. How can you just make a Cinderella II? I mean, stories end with "...happily ever after." The END! No more! No nice sister, no more mice, she's a princess, they're happy, they're boring, and that's how it should be.

Since I can present tone in my posts, I hope you all realize that I am not saying anything in hostility, and I haven't taken anything personally. Everyone has their own opinion, and I respect that. It's all in good humor.

Maybe I should have, but you know, it would have been something I would have done for that game's fan community. What good is a game that no one plays? I mean, sure, there's the joy of making the game, but that joy stems from the fact that it is something you will be able to share with an audience. If that audience doesn't appreciate what you're doing, then there is no point in continuing the production of the game.

"Yeah, copyrights suck...until someone violates yours, eh?" No. I'm not that pretentious. I would never assume that someone would honor a copyright of mine. I hold that if I release a game, it's up for grabs in every way shape or form, and I would be honored if someone would find my material good enough to use in a game, let alone a fan project.  I wouldn't even request that credit was given to me. In fact, I find it repulsive when someone says "you can use this, but you must give credit to me." BS. I don't HAVE to. Maybe you would like it if I did, but I don't have to. I would if someone said "I'd really appreciate it if you gave credit to me if you use this." Then it's fine. I'm talking about amateur created stuff here, like plugins and art and such.

I DON'T have a problem with commercial copyrights. I have a problem with the fanboys who try to enforce them. If the company has a beef with me, they can take it up with me. If I'm told not to BY THE COMPANY then I will cease. I don't need wannabe legal beagles on my back, though.

And Raggit, I'm sure I'd love to live with you.  ;D

Anywho, sorry if I come off as mad. Keep in mind I'm not talking about anyone specific.

I'm sorry, but I find it really offensive when people get all over other people about violating copyrights. I'm not talking about anything specific on this board, but it really annoys me.

I'll just give you an example. A year or so ago, I was on a message board for a very well-known adventure series. I'd proposed to make a fan game with AGS. I actually have the dedication it takes to put something together, but I decided not to when almost everyone who responded told me how I just couldn't do that. It's not legal. It ws the same message in about fifty different responses.

Well, lemme tell ya: I didn't post my proposal to have it legally analyzed. What I wanted to know was what things fans thought I should put in the game. I don't profess to be a great game designer, but no one has done anything with this series, and there are obviously fans who wanted to play a new game with the characters they knew and loved.

Apparently, I was wrong. I don't think Sierra (the web site I was on) actually has any lawyers any more. They let their fanboy messageboard inhabitants do the dirty work for them.

What's more is, the people who responded didn't really no much about how it was illegal... just that it was, SO THERE! TAKE THAT!

I'd better stop before I have a stroke. Sorry. I just got triggered by a post that reminded me of the fateful post I made so very long ago...

Ummm... what???

Being the Sierra fool that I am, I'd have to say my absolute favorite is Gabriel Knight 2... great plot, great characters, great puzzles, and so incredibly profound. The other 2 GK games are right up there, though.

I have a super-soft spot for King's Quest 6, though... and KQ 7... and KQ 5... and, hell, why not every Sierra adventure. But really, KQ6 is a favorite.
#29
Personally, I thought Gabriel Knight 3's Le Serpent Rouge and Sydney puzzles were truly wicked.

I don't have WinXP... I have Win98, which I downgraded from WinME. Not to be rude, but just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean that I'm lying. And I've never heard of Abandon Loader.

Do you guys know when SCI Studio 4 is coming out? I haven't visited the website for a long time, but the last version I have is something like 3.12.6 or something like that (made up number). If it does all those things, that would be awesome.

Also, I can't figure out how to open Space Quest 3 in SCI Studio. The only games I can get to work are King's Quest 4 and Laura Bow (I have the KQ, GK, and SQ collections, I lost my QFG collection). There is no SCIV.exe to open, at least on my comp.

And Freddy, maybe you have the time to go and learn the inner-workings of SCI code and program your own app like "most of us," but between school, homework, and life in general, it would be pretty hard for me to. And I'm not trying to be rude at all. I simply doubt that "most of us" have learned SCI programming and have created our own applications to rip sprites from King's Quest 6.

By the way, I feel really stupid about the first post on this topic. I didn't read it before posting, and I'm missing a lot of words. Wow. I sound like a retard. Sorry. "I already SCI Studio" and "My purpose for wanting is that I would like to rip some the characters..." SHEESH!
#31
Wow. That was helpful, Scumm. I wouldn't have figured that one out by myself.

Sorry, no, there's got to be a more efficient way than that.

Besides, KQ5, KQ6, and KQ7 freeze my system if they are minimized and you try to back to them. That means I have to take a screenshot, save my game, quit, paste in paint, save the picture, reopen the game, load my save, move my character to the next frame of animation (which would be very hard), print screen, etc.

Then after all THAT would come the hard part of cutting the character out of the background. So forgive me if I don't take your advice.
#32
Just out of curiosity, which puzzles, in any adventure games, did you think were most ridiculous?
#33
Ha ha! You're kidding me!! That's a big number. My personal favorite newbie (if it isn't too much of pot calling the kettle black) is PhilRoberts2004, who posts the most, profound, thought-provoking posts I've ever seen.

More like the most anger-inducing, judging from the responses he gets.

Sorry about keeping this thread alive so long. Am I beating a dead horse? Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome, YakSpit, and everyone else. I won't post here again unless something is directly asked of me. I think I'm overstaying my welcome on this one.

Not discouraging anyone else from posting, of course!  ;D

I don't think so. I don't know what the average age is around here, but I'm seventeen. I wouldn't call that too old, yet I still miss those days.
#35
That would be Yufster, but in all honesty, I have no experience with her. Is she really that bad?
#36
Yes, I do like the Dune books and have read the first three. My picture is from the Sci-Fi miniseries "Dune" if you guys didn't know.

Don't worry about setting an example for me. I may be new to this forum, but I have haunted other forums for many years. I can obey  the rules without another person's standards, anyway.

By the way, I can't seem to get my email thing to be unhidden. Anyone who's interested can PM me and I will give you my address. I only do this because you guys mentioned something about a forum member who mails people junk mail, and I don't want any.

I think what PhilRoberts said just shows his immaturity. People "drawing away" from AGS means they have lost interest and dedication to making games... which would not happen if you were truly dedicated in the first place. I think if you get burnt out on AGS that you were just "playing" it, like a game... you were amused for awhile, then you dropped it to move on to something else.

I think just because PhilRoberts is losing interest in AGS that doesn't mean everyone else is to. Sorry if he's not my trendsetter.

I need help ripping some Sierra characters from old games (nothing predating King's Quest 5). I would like to be able to extract characters from King's Quest 5 and 6 in particular. Anyone who knows how to do this, please PM me. I would be indebted to you.

Thanks.
#39
Does anyone know where I can get an SCIV resource viewer. I already SCI Studio, but you can only look at plain SCI resources.

My purpose for wanting is that I would like to rip some the characters from SCIV games, particularly King's Quest 6. If anyone knows a more efficient way to do it, I would be eternally grateful.

Adventure games can be simplistic in control, but they do vary. For instance, Gabriel Knight 1 had quite a few action buttons, yet King's Quest 7 had no action buttons, just a simple cursor that would glow over a hotspot.

Pirate Jack- I think a lot of first person shooters are becoming more and more complex. I miss the days of Doom - direction keys, control button, space bar. That was all you ever had to worry about.
