NOTE: - This is a light hearted question!!  So please read it as such!!

I watch TechTV a lot ('cause I'm a geek).  They play this show called Robot Wars.  Now, I find the concept slightly entertaining, I suppose, but after watching it today I began to wonder...

The show is from the UK.  Do the average people of the UK love this show as much as the audience seem to?  Or is this like a chess competition in America?  Are these people the 'geeks' of the UK or is the show really that popular.

Now America, in recent years, has been on a foreign kick.  Be it Latin Music (Ricky Martin, J-Lo, Shakira, etc.) or actors/films (Jason Statham, Russel Crowe, Roberto Benigni, Snatch, etc.) so I was just wondering if this is just another "Oooh it's from another country so we love it" bullshit kind of thing.

For me, I don't really care for the show.  I think the announcer guy ruins it.  Is he the "Let's get ready to rummmmmmmm bullllllllllllllllllll" guy of the UK??  ;)

So, can those of you from the UK fill me in?  What seems to be the opinion of this show (or do you even know about it) accross the pond?

Thanks!

Critics' Lounge / Need some Smurf on this ...
Sun 02/11/2003 22:35:49
So ... as I usually do, I sat down to work on something.  It turned into something else completely.

I kind of dig it ... can anybody see anything to improve upon?

Hit me!

:: ADDED NEW CHARACTER ... CHECK PAGE 2 ::

I've been working on this fu*ker for awhile and it's driving me crazy.

I just can't seem to get it to look right.

This is my latest iteration:

What is wrong with it?  It just doesn't look right ... I'm happy with everything but the legs, however, all c&c is welcome and appreciated.

This time around ... in honor of Halloween, let's do a Tim Burton'esque background.

Theme: A creepy landscape (cemetary, haunted mansion, deserted street, etc.) in a Tim Burton type style.
Size: No bigger than 640 x 480
Colors: No more than 128

For reference check out movies like Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, etc. to get a feel for Tim Burton's style.

The guy that I picked to win the last BGBlitz hasn't posted in awhile so I'm starting this new one.  Because of this, the winner will be selected by your votes (not just mine ... though I will be voting)

Enjoy and Happy Halloween (to those who celebrate the holiday)

I feel pretty confident in my ability to create most parts of my games in AGS.

However, the one part that always worries me is the music.

I'm about as musically talented as a sponge.

Well, today I saw this on Call For Help (on TechTV) and it's just the coolest thing.

TOY Symphony

This is hard to describe, but it basically gives you the ability to 'draw' music.  Once you get the hang of how it works it's really cool.

For those who know music and have musical talent might find this entertaining though not really all that powerful.  But to those like me, who don't know 'a minor' from 'b flat' ... this is a pretty cool way to feel like a musician.

Just thought I'd share!

General Discussion / A plan for peace ...
Tue 16/09/2003 20:14:41
This is Some Guy's plan for peace around the world:

"I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of a plan for peace. So, here's one plan:

- The US will apologize to the world for our "interference" in their affairs, past & present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo, Noriega, Milosovich and the rest of those 'good ole boys.' We will never "interfere" again.

- We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with Germany, South Korea and the Philippines. They don't want us there. We would station troops at our borders. No one sneaking through holes in the fence.

- All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and leave. We'll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of who or where they are. France would welcome them.

- All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 days unless given a special permit. No one from a terrorist nation would be allowed in. If you don't like it there, change it yourself and don't hide here. Asylum would never be available to anyone. We don't need any more cab drivers or 7-11 cashiers.

- No "students" over age 21. The older ones are the bombers. If they don't attend classes, they get a "D" and it's back home baby.

- The US will make a strong effort to become self-sufficient energy wise. This will include developing non-polluting sources of energy but will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The caribou will have to cope for a while.

- Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel for their oil. If they don't like it, we go some place else. They can go somewhere else to sell their production. (About a week of the wells filling up the storage sites would be enough.)

- If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we will not "interfere." They can pray to Allah or whomever, for seeds, rain, cement or whatever they need. Besides most of what we give them is stolen or given to the army. The people who need it most get very little, if anything.

- Ship the UN Headquarters to an isolated island some place. We don't need the spies and fair weather friends here. Besides, the building would make a good homeless shelter or lockup for illegal aliens.

- All Americans must go to charm and beauty school. That way, no one can call us "Ugly Americans" any longer.

Now, ain't that a winner of a plan?

From Robin Williams
"The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying 'Give me your poor, your tired, your huddled masses.' She's got a baseball bat and she's yelling, 'You want a piece of me?'"

The rules this time are simple:
Create a sprite of a movie character!

1) 200x200 max resolution
2) unlimited colors
3) animation optional

Examples:

Doesn't have to be super recognizable ... but the more recognizable the better!

Fly free and sprite jam!!!

Well ... an era has ended.  I don't know how many of you will care, but this effects me

John Ritter died of a massive heart attack on the set of his new TV show.

The new show was pretty funny (the blonde is HOT!) but I used to love Three's Company when I was a kid.  My mom used to refuse to let me watch it but her and my father would.  So I would sneak down the stairs and watch it by peaking around the corner.

Probably explains a lot about me ...

Anyhow ... godspeed Mr. Ritter.  You will be missed.

I posted this in the Games in Production but I thought I'd bring it into here for some more feedback.

These are my three versions (1st being the oldest).  What do you think of the third.  Does the perspective feel okay?  The first one (thanks to Scummbuddy's advice) just wasn't right and I made the second attempt which was closer ...

First:

Second:

Third:

I rounded off the bottom of the ship (gave it some perspective) and 'rounded' off the top with some angles and some hi-lights.

What do you think?

Whenever I use the Save, Load, or Inventory buttons on my GUI the Quit box comes up after I click.  For instance, if I click on an inventory item, once it's selected the inventory window goes away but the quit gui pops open.  I can't figure out why it's doing that.  I'm sure it's just a missing bracket or something.

This is the code I think is causing it:

function interface_click(int interface, int button) {
 if (interface == 1) {
   if (button == 4)   // see inventory
     InventoryScreen();
   else if (button == 5)    // save game
     Display("This feature is unavailable at this time");
     // SaveGameDialog();
   else if (button == 6)   // load game
     Display("This feature is unavailable at this time");
     // RestoreGameDialog();
   else if (button == 7)   // quit
     GUIOff(1);
     GUIOn(2);
     SetMouseCursor(6);
    // QuitGame(1);
 }  // end if interface 1

// InterFace 2

if (interface == 2) {
if (button == 1)
QuitGame(0);
else if (button == 2)
GUIOff(2);
SetCursorMode(1);
GUIOn(1);
}

}

Thanks for any help!

General Discussion / the mp3 controversy ...
Sat 09/08/2003 21:36:50
Humbly edited out ...

What do you all think about the shit-storm of recent years about mp3 downloads?

Do you think the RIAA is justified?

Do you think they're (RIAA) just making things worse?

Do you download mp3?

Me personally, I have over 3500 mp3s on my secondary hard-drive.  I download like a mad man.  I was, up until about a year ago, still actively buying CDs.  Since the RIAA (and some artists) starting whining and making such a huge deal over this I stopped.

I go to a shit load of concerts which is, to my understanding, where the artist(s) get their money.  So screw the production companies and their capitalist greed.  I'm not giving them another cent until they a) lower prices of CDs or b) realize they're in the business of selling music and not selling CDs and get on board with mp3.

mp3 is here to stay!  Long live mp3!!

Please point me to another thread on this topic ... oh mighty one  :P

General Discussion / Something trippy ....

I stumbled across this ... thought some of y'all might get a kick out of it!  (It's too big to put into the actual window)

Trippy Image

I think it would be nice to have the ability to remove a background image from the GUI.

Right now if you select to use a background image in a GUI you can't revert to having no background.  The only way I've found to do it is to duplicate a sprite and select it as the background, then delete that sprite from the Sprite Manager, then double-click (in the GUI properties window) the background image option.  It gives an error then loads the sprite manager to select a background, then I hit escape and I'm back to (none) in the background slot.  So I suggest something like this:

When you click on the little box with an X (the Xbox?) it would just clear out the background for the GUI.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned.

Okay ... I've decided to tackle dialog trees.  I've got it licked!  I get how it works and I've even gotten a good handle of the scripting involved!  Then I got stuck 'cause I didn't like the fact that the dialog showed up in that big black box at the bottom of the screen.  Well I figured that out but now I'm stumped ...

How can I change the Text/Font that is used for Dialogs.  I would like to select the font that is used and also edit the colors.  I've found that I can change the mouseOver color by editing the forground color for the GUI I use for the dialogs, but how about the initial color.  It's defaulting to white and I want it black.

Thanks and I'm sorry if this falls under the RTFM clause ... I couldn't find it in there!
