I am a fan of this idea.

I had the same basic idea some years ago.  I was in the beginning phases of a game where the character would start in 200X (I think it was around 2007 or so when I developed the idea) and he would travel back in time to 1979, 1983, 1988, 1991, 1995 etc... and each "era" he went to the graphics/GUIs would be reflective of video games of that era.  So, for instance, when he lands in 1979 it would be simple 2 color graphics, to CGA, EGA, VGA, SVGA etc... until he landed back in his normal time and the graphics were "modern".

I think it's a neat dynamic and (as mentioned already) if done "right" would be very cool.

I particularly like Ghost's thoughts on how a character's "view" of the world would alter the graphics (IE the dog).

I have removed the offending post (so nobody gets confused about what Ghost is/was talking about!)

SaneCo - not cool, please do NOT do something like that again.

General Discussion / Re: Game rage
Sun 27/05/2012 18:28:05

When I was a kid I used to get FURIOUS at video games!  Mostly towards [losing at] sports games.  I did get angry, as a few have mentioned in here, when I felt that a game had a design flaw that made playing difficult/annoying.  The tipping point for me was ~1997.  I was playing 1080 Snowboarding on the N64... I knew exactly how to pull off the move but now matter how deftly I moved my fingers and perfected the timing it was 1 out 5 times it would actually work and pull-off the move.  There was one night I got so furious I tore the cart out of the console and threw it on the ground.  I grabbed a hammer (not sure why there was a hammer in the room but there was) and smashed the cart into tiny pieces.  I felt a proper fool after having done it and didn't touch another video game (except Tetris on my GBA) for over 6 years. When I got back into games in 2003 (around the time I stumbled on AGS) I realized my "temper" had completely changed.  I still get irritated at games but now if I feel my temper rising I simply walk away.

He is smart and realizes that we (humans) NEED to be in space... not the low-earth orbit bullshit we've been stuck with since 1972.
Do we really? Why? I have a hard time thinking of a problem that isn't easier to solve on Earth than in space.

To my mind; yes.  To yours; no.

I've had this conversation so many times before (a few times on this board even) and the conclusion is that people who think as you do (and I'm not saying you're wrong) will never be persuaded to see the side that people like me present on the subject (and the reverse is true as well).  I think human kind has no hope of long-term existence if we remain a one-planet species.  You disagree.  I'm perfectly content leaving it at that because, honestly, I'm tired of this argument :)

When my future relatives watch your future relatives disintegrate on earth while we're safely off the planet I will have the last laugh :P

So it's cool to see that I was correct in my assumption (on why he wrote the article in the first place) and I agree 100% with his contention!  If people are talking about it and getting excited about it there's a FAR greater chance of something like that actually happening.

Can't happen soon enough as far as I'm concerned!

I only quickly read the article but I have a suspicion that the author's intent wasn't so much to actually build an Enterprise...

I suspect his actual intent was to spark some interest in the concept of building "spaceships".  He is smart and realizes that we (humans) NEED to be in space... not the low-earth orbit bullshit we've been stuck with since 1972.  So he whips up some plans saying how it's feasible to build the enterprise and suddenly people take notice of space exploration again.

In that light, I think he was successful 'cause here we all are talking about the "realistic" side of his concept.

Yeah I read that article last week.  Seriously cool stuff!  I was wondering about this very subject the other day 'cause I watched Star Trek (2009) and it showed the Enterprise being built on Earth and I wondered about that.  If the majority of the materials used were mined on Earth it would make sense to build it on the planet... I just wonder how they got it off the planet... can large starships (in the Star Trek universe) fly in planetary atmospheres?

I love the concept of "lassoing" asteroids and mining them.  So cool.  Granted if the lasso broke we could destroy the planet so they'd have to build the corral a safe distance from mother-earth (nod)
#1112
This will never come to pass.  However I don't think it's a waste of time as initiatives like this can often lead to interest in similar projects.  And we (humans) NEED to get back to space exploration... it's tragic that humans haven't left low-earth orbit since 1972.  Pathetic really.

As pleased as I am that you shared so many screenshots can you please convert the images to PNG or JPG format.  We don't allow BMPs (but the filter was somehow lost in the upgrade).  It will be back in place soon and your images will "break".

Thanks!

Okay... the code CSS should be fixed (very strange issue; I have no idea how it was removed).

Code: ags
Code is cool!

As for the syntax formatting; somebody with more AGS coding experience than I will have to take a look at that (and which module to install/modify).

I'm happy to work with somebody on it though 8-)

Welcome to the Games in Production Forum.

This is the place to promote the game that you're currently working on.  It's a great way for you to get your name out there and for people to see what your game is about (and hopefully become interested in the project!).  It is also a great place to see what others are currently working on.

We all want this forum clean and organized. So, like the subject implies, please "READ BEFORE POSTING!".

This forum is strictly moderated, so read these rules and make sure you understand them before continuing!

The Simple Rules:
PLEASE NOTE: Your thread could be locked if you neglect to follow these rules!

1) Your game must actually be 'in production'.
This means you've actually begun working on it.  Don't post anything about an idea you have for a game.  That belongs in Adventure Related Talk & Chat or the Critics Lounge.

2) Your game must actually be made in Adventure Game Studio
This means the production being shown in your thread is from the AGS version of your game.  If you're building an Adventure Game in another engine (or will port to another platform) we'd love to hear about, just not in the AGS Games in Production board.  Share it in the Adventure Related Talk & Chat board!  All games in the AGS Games in Production board must be developed with AGS.

3) A minimum of two (in-game) screenshots must be available.
If you aren't far enough to be able to take different screenshots, don't post yet!  We know some of you don't want to show too much of the game, but two screenies isn't too much to ask!  Please note that splash screens and options/menu screens don't count as one of the two.  They must be actual screenshots of two (or more) different backgrounds.
Sub-Rule - If you are creating a one-room game you need only post one in-game screenshot (obviously as there wouldn't be another) and in this case you can use a title/splash screen (or the same screen with a GUI showing or something) as the second

4) You must have a clear outline of the story/plot.
You don't have to give anything away, but be clear what the game is about and what the player can expect.

5) Updates should be displayed in your game's thread.
You are free to post links to offsite information about your game's updates (like your personal website, or social media platforms) but if you're going to post an update to the Games in Production thread the post should contain the relevant information about the update you're linking to and not just the external link!
Not everybody uses social media (or wants to leave the forums to read an update) so it's best to include the update details in the thread.

6) ONE thread per game only!
If you are working on more than one game you may have a thread for each but do not put more than one game in a production thread.

7) The subject line must be the title of your game.
Working titles are okay, but if you don't have a title at all, then don't post yet!
It is encouraged to have a brief update after the title, for example:
- MoNKeY WReNCH - DEMO available
- Attack of the Squalmen - need help with scripting
- Tale of a Rotten Weener Shnitzle - 98% complete!
DON'T do this:
- NEW GAME BY ME!!!11!!!111 (and similar)

8) Progress/Status Report (optional)
In the first post, tell us what you've got done so far and/or how you're progressing!  For example:
- graphics 90%
- puzzles 45%
- scripting 15%
- music/sound 90%

The DOs & DON'Ts ...

DO edit the original post so newer readers can grab the latest info about your game:
As the game author, you should try to edit the original post for updates, whenever possible, to make sure that new readers of the thread get the latest status. Posting a reply is fine too (and is necessary to bump the thread).

DO post any type of promotional material:
Screenshots, promotional material, designer diaries, demo downloads, music samples, requests for help with your game, links to your website, release dates, etc...

DO NOT post requests for C&C:
That's what the Critic's Lounge is for. Please post in there to ask for any type of critisism.

DO NOT make various threads about nothing:
This forum is for promoting your game, not general chat. You can chat inside one of the game's threads, but stay on topic!
NO threads about general topics in here, for example:
- What do you guys think of MI2's GUI?
- Need some cool ideas for my game...
Threads like these go in the Adventure Related Talk & Chat forum.

DO NOT dig up old threads without good reason!
Threads that haven't been posted to/updated in 90 days shouldn't be arbitrarily posted to! If you have specific news about the game (and know it's still in production) that's fine but if you have a random question consider PMing the author to ask rather than bumping a [potentially] abandoned game's thread!

Thanks for understanding!
Good luck and happy game-making!!

* Old Threads are threads that have been inactive for near to over 90 days (3 months).

Just saw this.  Will take a look.

Quote from: Khris on Wed 02/05/2012 08:25:33Some of the codeblock CSS and the syntax highlighting are gone.
Codeblocks are still in a fixed-width, small font and selectable, but that's it.
Can you give me some details on what it's supposed to look like?  And what do you mean by syntax highlighting?

28 April - 1 June 2012

To inaugurate the launch of the new website/forums (AGS got a make-over!) we have decided to open up a contest to create new themes for the forums!

Yes, that's right, you could design a theme that could grace the AGS forums.  Countless thousands of users could marvel at your design prowess!!

So what does it take to be a super-star theme designer?
  • You must know how to create/install your own SMF Themes (not just photoshop mockups!)
  • You must have a test-server (running SMF v2.0.2) setup where you can create your theme
Why do we do it this way?

Honestly?  Creating a theme is a LOT of work.  If you've never done it before you will probably underestimate just how much work is required to customize your own theme!  Because we (obviously) can't give every contestant admin-level access to the AGS boards this is why this contest requires you to have a test-server set up to create your own theme(s) so that, should you win the contest, it's just a matter of uploading your theme to AGS and voila!  We have a new theme!

Theme Design Guidelines

The sky is the limit really!!  You can make it based off a well-known adventure game (AGS made or other) or just make it stylized as you want!  The only restriction is it must be based off the Curve 2.0 theme.  The rest is up to you!  Just remember, the more "mass appeal" you achieve, the more likely you are to win :)

Helpful Links:
Contest Rules:
  • The theme must be based off the Curve 2.0 theme (doesn't have to resemble it at all, just based off that template)
  • Your theme must be completed by the contest deadline
  • You must provide three screenshots showing your theme's best assets (recommended are the main boards index, the threads index, and the thread display pages)
  • It is recommended that you also setup your webserver/SMF to allow for guest access so people can view your theme "live" but this is not required
So how is the winner decided?

The winner(s) will be decided by community vote!  If there are enough entries, or the vote is close enough (or a tie), more than one theme could be chosen for inclusion!  However, if there aren't more than 3 entries the contest deadline may be extended or the contest may simply be terminated all together.

Feel free to use this thread to post Works in Progress as well as mockups and concepts!

As mentioned; creating a theme is a LOT of work!  Please be sure you can commit the time necessary to create a theme if you intend to enter this contest!

Something new (with SMF 2.0) is the option between the drop-down stuff or the side-panel stuff.  If you have the drop-downs (like Tabata) and want the side-panel stuff look all the way over to the right you should see two little arrows << ... click those and it will swap to the side-panel layout.  Not sure if this was unclear to anybody.  It's horribly designed and not very obvious what it is for.

Great to hear.  However, this thread was almost a full-year dead.

SSlaxx, please do not do that again.  It's up to the author (or team members) to update the thread (no matter the circumstances).
