Critics' Lounge / Re: New GrimQuest website
Sun 18/03/2012 23:24:07
When viewing it from my laptop the actual content of the site (the too fast moving slideshow area) is almost off the bottom of the screen so I have to scroll down to read the content.  I try to avoid this type of layout when I design (as I find it annoying).

Also, on the topic of the slideshow thing; I'm not a big fan.  I prefer to present the content in a way that doesn't force them to either wait or click.  I know the moving stuff is all the rage these days but the most important thing is still providing the content in the most easy and convenient (user friendly) way.

I started to work on a mockup but simply ran out of time so I'm going to post what I started;

- retooled the logo's color a bit (the logo was getting lost in the grey background pattern) and made it a bit smaller
- shrunk down the header area's height to pull the content up more
- reworked how the content is displayed (three of the slideshow's options felt like they could be one section "features")
- I intended to put more graphics in (in the media area particularly) or maybe the heads could have little icons, something like that (I just ran out of time!)
- the bottom area (darker) was intended to be more information (a footer of course) but again, time ran off on me

Just some suggestions... you've already made MAJOR improvements from the first time I clicked the link!  I don't think enough has been said about that original background (I think my eyes are still hemorrhaging!!) so take this as you wish!

Probably should have waited until you had the 2 screen-shots to create this thread.

I'm not going to lock it (yet (because you provided some character animations and the menu looks in-game)) but you need to add another in-game screen as soon as possible.

Thanks.

The first screen appears to be a menu screen... so please add on more "in game" screen-shot (as the rules require).

The project sounds interesting.  Good luck with it!

Welcome back!  I definitely remember you because I remember diggin' your art style very much.

I did some searching in my archives and found a few things:

Look familiar?

Dr. Spengler - You didn't technically break the rules (in 2 days you would have) so I'm not layin' down the law here... but this is (just going back a few pages) the 7th time you've dug this thread up to ask for a status update.  How about sending a PM to the author next time or just let him/her update this thread it when they're ready to? :)

fan
Since it's been dug up anyway ... I wouldn't mind an update on the progress either!

Nah ... keep it up!!

A very valid point by Radiant!  However, if there is any discussion needed for that matter please address the issue in PMs!  Thanks!

You know what... nevermind.  If it gets too off-topic in here (as this newest revelation is sure to cause) then I can finally just lock this thread and be done with it.

Fire away!

Quote from: m0ds on Thu 01/03/2012 16:16:44It seems like a good method to me, I presume it also helps people keep creative control of their project, rather than investors shaping it to their vision.

This fact alone is what makes me a fan of crowd-sourcing.  I have been involved with many projects where investors always get in the way.  They want to make it their way and are always quick to drop the, "where'd you get the money to do this??" card.  Annoying.  Granted I've also worked with an investor that sat back and trusted the people they put their money on (but this is the rarity in my experience).

I have so many ideas that I've never done anything with 'cause I didn't have the money to start the project and simply will NOT give over creative control.  So, to me, crowd-sourcing is the answer.  If it's only a temporary bubble (that might burst in a few years) I want to get in on it now!! :)

Perhaps it is extremely naive of me but I like to believe (at least with kickstarter) that the people taking the time/effort to make a project (put together all the pieces, the video, the incentives, etc) they are doing it for something they are passionate about and actually WANT to develop.  So the accountability is on themselves!

Having said that it was, of course, one of my initial questions when I was researching kickstarter.  I was confused as to what would stop somebody from just takin' the money and runnin' off to the bahamas for a few weeks.

But, as with investing in anything, there is risk.  So if you back an idea on kickstarter and it never comes to fruition I feel it's the same risk you take with an old-school investment.

But I feel something like kickstarter is safer than a traditional investment.  I mean; if one person gives you 100,000 dollars they've put a lot on the line.  If 100,000 people each give you a dollar the "risk" is so distributed that it doesn't make/break the individual anymore.  To me, this is the strongest selling point of crowd-sourcing.

Personally I love the concept.  I worry about it becoming over-crowded though.

I'm currently working freelance for a company and am trying to convince them to do a kickstarter campaign to fund us (trying desperately to convince them to NOT get investors as we would lose too much control that way).  With crowdsource funds you get what you need and aren't "beholden" to any investor(s).  We are taking the approach of "we want to put the power in your hands" (meaning our users).  You still have to deliver, of course, but don't have a greedy investor breathing down your neck!

I think it's too early to say for sure whether this is the future but I really do like the concept and hope it solidifies as a viable way to fund projects!  I have TONS of ideas I'd like to work on, but lack the financial freedom to do so.  This method of getting funding will/could work perfectly for that!

You could pull off the illusion of torso-sway by simply making the arm move back and forth (from the shoulder)!

So when the arm swings back make the shoulder joint 2 pixels farther back, and the opposite for when it swings forward (this would be easier if you have the arm on it's own layer).

This is, of course, just a suggestion.  I'd be perfectly happy with it as-is if I saw it in a game!
#1176
YES!  Much better (on the arm thing) and the legs are improved too (though they didn't really bother me too much in the original!).

Now; about that torso rotation... ;)
#1177
I like it!

The only two things I would nit-pick are:

1) the back arm (his left) at it's farthest back frame it feels like it just blinks into place and then vanishes... maybe one extra visible frame in there to "ease" it back/fwd a bit might help!

2) the torso bobs up and down (this is good) but has zero side-to-side movement ... even just a little would really polish this up a bit!  Probably hard to do since there's nothing to really indicate this but maybe just altering the shape a little could pull it off.

This sounds (and looks) pretty fantastic!

If you are concerned about the appearance of the graphics, however, please post in the Critics Lounge.  You will get invaluable advice in there!  To the rest, keep the C&C out of this thread!

Really happy to know this is still going!
