I find it interesting how some people who say things like, "he was just the head of a big organization and not responsible for all the great stuff" are the same people who say things like, "He's the President, so he's responsible for what the government does" when something goes wrong.  So when it's time to lay blame it's okay to point to the head but when it's time to give credit it doesn't work the same way?  That's silly.

I don't use/like Macs (I find the operating system cumbersome).  I like my iPhone, love my iPad and DESPISE their 'control' system.  It's my device and I will put whatever I want on it (hence the jailbreaking).

Jobs, Gates, Wosniak... these guys bought off the shelf electronics and DEFINED modern computing in their garages in the late 70s.  They may have borrowed here, tweaked there, stolen an idea or two ... but so did EVERY pioneer of one area or another.  The man was instrumental to the state of modern technology and there's simply no way to deny that (or reason to).

It is for that reason I give respect and sorrow at his passing.  It's not fanboyism or adoration.  It's simply admiration for his achievements and contributions to a field we are all involved in (since you're reading this on a [device] on the internet on a forum for making computer games).

To each their own I guess...

I'm definitely not a mac fan (as many of you know) but I was shocked by how much it upset me when I learned of this last night.

I think it's because he was a pioneer in the personal computing realm ... without him I might not be able to enjoy my career the way I do.  He was a forerunner and he has, I think, well earned his place in world history.

Shame to die so young but his legacy will remain for a long time I think...

I want you.

To be a game developer again too.

Good day sir.

I have mixed feelings on it... I mean, on the one hand, the first time you play through it everything is 'new' so an extended death scene is fine (and enjoyable)!  But if you die, replay, die again [repeat] it gets VERY monotonous and irritating (even if it's skip-able).  I think Prince of Persia (as mentioned) did it right.

The game that pops up in my mind is the old SNES version of Aladdin.  Every time you die (and for me that was a LOT) it was this fade out of the background, spin the character around dramatically, falls to the ground, music, Abu comes over to lament ... I mean, sure, it was a nicely animated sequence but after the umpteenth time it's just annoying!

Also, just out of curiosity... why no blood?  The character is dying right?  (it's just always something that has piqued my curiosity why it's "okay" to kill visually as long as there's no blood... the character is still dead :) )

Nice little demo.  I particularly liked the music!

Some nitpicky stuff:

- the open screens (the company logo and the fan community graphics) are on the screen a LONG time and are unskipable (made me think something had gone wrong)

- It is a tad bit tedious to have to wait for the secondary characters all the time (watch them walk) at  the begining of the demo (you walk off the screen, then Sapito follows, then Barranca) it really slows down the game play

- the phrase "let's leave it" feels wrong to me... I'm guessing it should be translated to "Let's go"

All-in-all I liked the feel of it and think it's off to a great start!  Keep up the good work team!

So why not wait till you can actually post the demo-link?

I make this post because:

1) that type of post always bugs me ... there's no reason to post "will be available shortly" because that means it's not complete (as was stated!) and you should have just waited to post until it WAS ready and...

2) now when you make another post to provide an actual link (hopefully?) it won't be a double-post.

I'm not being 'rude' or anything... just expressing (what I would guess) would be all our aggravation at being told it's ready... but we can't try it yet!
:D

Alright... it's getting a bit off-topic in here.  Let's get this back on-topic please!

I was pumped to see they were finally releasing this! I love tablets but there's nothing like drawing on paper for me (will make character animations for adventure games sooooo much easier!)

I was finally about the pull the trigger and get the Cintiq when I started hearing rumors about the Inkling... so glad I didn't spend all that money when this is only 200USD.  I figure even if it only works 1/2 as good as it looks like it does it's still gonna be great.  And the best part is if I don't like and it doesn't do what I want, it's not 3,000 dollars down the drain!

I'll be getting this as soon as it's available!

Please read the rules.  PM me when/if you're ready.

I think it's important to note that pixel joint are the Nazis of pixel art and they practice genocide on anything that doesn't fit their standards of what they consider pixel art.

I think the article does a decent job of showing the fundamentals but is too restrictive/technical for what I consider to be "art".  I think it should be called, "one pixel methodology" tutorial rather than "art" because with that many restrictions it ceases to be art (to my way of thinking) and becomes more a system.

I'm all about getting critiques and advice on stuff I'm working on but there's a point where you have to say to yourself, this is MY work.  If you like how something looks and somebody's telling you to change it 'cause "blah blah convention blah blah" you shouldn't change it if you think it looks right and don't like what they're suggesting.  Now don't get me wrong if something is suggested that, to my mind, helps the image then of course, I'd make a change and learn from it!  But in the end it's MY work and it must look good to ME.

So Snarky ... whether or not some people might not consider your image pixel-art if you think it looks right you should leave it as is and not worry about one person's views on what constitutes "proper pixel techniques".

Helm is an amazing artist but if I tried to be as technical as he is with his work I'm not sure I'd be having any fun.  I'm sure it's second nature to him and he does it easily but not everybody can achieve that level.  I mean I consider myself a decent enough artist but I'm not even close to his skill.

Another thing I try to remember is that probably (random number here) 99% of the people seeing the work aren't going to care about "fat" pixels and the like and won't even notice it.  They'll just say "love the graphics!!!!1!!".

Since the game is not in production (and all the screens are broken in the first post) I'm locking this!

The download link is provided so anybody wanting to give feedback feel free to do it via PM!
#1317
I'm not a php guy (coldfusion for-eva!!) but my first guess would be that there's something in the include file that's causing it and not this block of code itself.

Line breaks in html can cause a bit of space, but not in the volume you're talking about!

Is it possible for us to see the index file's code?

Or...

Are you using any CSS for that div that might be influencing it?  Line-height, white-space, absolute positioning etc?  Any "blocking" calls that might throw off the layout?

I love these little mark-up mysteries!!  They always seem like you've found an instance of a browser's bug but in the end it's a missing comma or something :)

Okay this thread has degenerated into nonsense.

This is now resembling a critics lounge thread of which it is not.

icey if you want critics on it post in the critics lounge.

It's obvious now we can't behave in here... so I'm puttin' on my Sith Gear and going Dictator on this thread and even the smallest rule-breaking will result in the thread being locked.

Quote from: Ascovel on Wed 31/08/2011 17:09:24Somehow it worked pretty well in the 90s and before. Most games tried to innovate and stand out.

Valid point.

However the gaming world now is vastly different than it was then!  It's soooo saturated now!  I think the problem with innovation is it will [almost always] extend the delivery date!  And these big companies want to get their games on the shelves (making money) as quickly as possible so they spit out "generic" games to the masses!

1) Don't misunderstand; I'm ALL about innovation!
2) There's still plenty of innovation happening (thankfully) but in regards to the "mainstream" label I was just pointing out why so many "generic" games are produced!
