General Discussion / Re: The Twitter Trials
Mon 17/05/2010 01:57:23
In this case I have to call both parties stupid.  Yeah, fining the guy (and making him a "criminal") for such an obviously jesting tweet is ridiculous.

However, the guy is a moron for posting something like that (even in jest).  It's a sad fact of the world we live in that words like "blow up" and "airport" should not be used in conjunction with one another.  This was a fact even before 9/11.

I think the punishment doesn't fit the "crime" though ... that's just plain ridiculous.

What I'm more curious about here is whether MI6 was "listening" or if somebody (of his 600 followers) ratted him out.

Quote from: InCreator on Fri 14/05/2010 20:17:47This is totally not about "why".
"Why" does occur, but when to-be-smoker is a dumb kid and tries to be like cool kids.
This is absolutely different and is not what I said.

I think it is exactly about "why" but I'm not going to argue semantics :)

However I think you've hit on the root of the problem with your reply.  There is this social impression that it's the "cool" people that smoke.  I find that pathetic.  Smoking does not make a person look cool, it makes them look dirty and foolish (to me).  The sooner people get past this notion (that smoking is somehow cool) out of their heads the better off we'll be as a species.

It's similar to how people will look at the person that isn't drinking (alcohol) while out with friends at a pub/club/etc.  Like somehow there's something wrong with you 'cause you're not killing brain-cells with the rest of them.  It's sad.

Quote from: anian on Fri 14/05/2010 20:45:47It was a strange example.

:)

edit - just to clarify, I'm not judging any of you smokers!  Just expressing my opinions :)

Quote from: anian on Fri 14/05/2010 18:31:02On one hand, really dumb habit, on the other it gives you something to do if you're alone and for example waiting for someone in the street - you're not standing there like an idiot doing nothing, you're there standing and having a smoke...and maybe an idiot.  ;D Also how nice is to have a lighter when a pretty girl asks.

This is just my opinion, but if I see a person standing there doing nothing versus a person standing there smoking ... to me, the one smoking resembles an "idiot" far more than the non-smoker.  I think "not looking like an idiot" is a horrible excuse for poisoning yourself.

Quote from: InCreator on Fri 14/05/2010 18:46:40Regarding previous post, in every school, workplace or whatever, first people you meet are at smoking area. And whoa, you have something in common!

This reasoning is what bothers me most about the "why" people smoke.  If you need something like smoking to create a common bond, then you've lost before you started.  How about "hey we're all humans, we have something in common!" or "You have eyes?  Me too!!"

I'm not refuting the social aspect of smoking, just calling it out for it's sheer stupidity.

[ sarcasm ] I want to fit in, so I'll destroy my lungs and decrease my over-all lifespan!   [ /sarcasm ]

Good call!!  ** thumbs up ** :P

Smoking makes me want to make a statement like, "Damn ... it's 2010 and we know there's nothing good about smoking yet we still do it.  Amazing how stupid humans are" but humans also still live their daily lives (in 2010) from books written 2000 years ago.  So there's probably just no hope.

Quote from: Snake on Fri 14/05/2010 16:11:08And then it was a THING. I really did QUIT for GOOD. Ah, crap. I couldn't go back now. Call it a strong will, I guess, because I haven't.

100% agree.  After fighting through the cravings and anxiety I did the same thing!  I made it a "thing".  A contest or challenge.  The cigarettes were trying to get me to come back to them and I refused to give in.  I would not let them win!  This is the trick I always suggest to my friends/family who are wanting to quit.  I tell them that once you get to that stage it's much easier to resist and keep quitting!

I still, to this day, want to smoke (even though I know it's stupid and disgusting).  It's less of a "craving" though.   It's more of just ... fond memories, I think.

Ex-smoker here ...

I quit because it's [one of] the most moronic habits a human being can willingly do to one's self.  However, even knowing this ... I still loved every drag I ever took on a cigarette.  Right up to the last one.  But it's stupid, so I quit.

I was at a friend's wedding, realized I needed to stop, so I never smoked again.  I had, at that point, been smoking steady for about 6 years (but on/off for about 12 years total at that point).  I never cheated once.  Sure it was hard (the shakes, cravings, anxiety, etc) but I decided to quit, and did.  100% cold turkey.  So I have zero tolerance for people that say they just can't do it cold turkey and use "addiction" as a crutch to explain lack of will-power.  Anything worth doing is usually difficult.

Now (perhaps a tad hypocritically) I just don't understand how/why people smoke.  It's a disgusting habit; it turns you skin "old" prematurely, makes your fingers yellow, your teeth discolor, your clothes reek, irreparably damages your body (lungs, heart, etc), costs way too much money ... the list goes on an on.  It's just stupid.

We had this discussion on here a few years back and I remember somebody (can't recall who) using the "social acceptance" excuse which I find ridiculous but hey ... everybody has an excuse!

Quote from: Disco on Wed 12/05/2010 18:32:06Currently we are landing in Milan 4 days early and leaving straight away for Turin, then back to Milan a couple days before Mittens. Afterwards, our itinerary takes us through Cortona, Assisi, and Venice (where we shall happily provide a buzzkill for anyone's romantic plans  ;)) before flying back to London from Milan.

Haha!  Well we can all travel there together (would be fun) but you can't come on the romantic gondola ride with us (unless you steer it and do that singing stuff) :P

I am thinking that the road-trip might have to be something like Pisa (it seems roughly the same distance as the Bastogne trip was - might be a bit further, hard to tell on google maps).  I've heard Pisa is a tad underwhelming but I still would like to see the leaning tower thing-a-ma-bob.

Pompeii looks to be very far and would probably take too much time away from Mittens so I'll worry about that outside of the Mittens time-line.  I'm flying into Rome so that solves that little bit as well.

Sooo ... Pisa anyone?? :)

No no ... AGS is definitely not for RPGs.  Definitely not.  No.  Not.  **shakes head**

Well for those of us who can't get 2 weeks off (I went on a cruise last week using 1 of my 2 allowed vacation weeks) cramming as much into the week is a necessity!  I have managed to squeeze a few extra days out of them, but not another full week.

So whoever is interested let me know!  It'd be great to have a group traveling together!  Venice is a long way from the villa so Tarah and I will probably do that after and, no offense, but I want to be alone with her in Venice :P  I know in France we made a day trip to Bastogne and it worked out very well (except for that traffic jam on the way back!).

I'll go by myself (with Tarah of course ... unless Andail steals her heart from me!!) but I thought I'd just offer up the option to see if anybody else was interested!
#1611
Okay ... my plans have (maybe) changed a bit.  I am bringing Tarah with me but now where we "land" is up in the air.

There are a few things I need/want to see while in Italy (Rome, Pompeii/Vesuvius, Venice, etc) so if people want to make some road-trips during mittens (which would be preferable) that would be great!  However, if nobody else wants to make the road-trips (which is fine, of course!) I want to plan around doing them before/after Mittens.  I figure if I'm going all the way to Italy I'm going to see all those places I have always wanted to see!! :)

I will probably rent a car where ever we (Tarah and I) land so we'd probably have (at least) 2 spaces available.  However, we have talked about trains as well so that's not fully decided just yet!

I know I mentioned it before but this thread is 20 pages long now ... anybody interested in Rome, Pompeii, Venice?  Let me know and let's solidify some plans!

If you trace this water-walker's lineage back you'll discover that he is, in fact, a distant relative of Jesus.

However, given a small genetic hiccup in the late 13th century (it's a long story) he didn't fully inherit the walk-on-water gene thus he must achieve speed and can only maintain it for a few steps before science takes over.

He is well aware of his lineage however, given the recent treatment of those claiming to be the "messiah" (Jim Jones, David Koresh, Marshall Applewhite, etc) and his background in marketing, he decided the better route was to capitalize off his heritage by producing a line of shoes and duping the willing and gullible into buying them.

Brilliant if you ask me.

I second (third/fourth) the RPGMaker option.

Not only is it a far superior program to AGS, it's vastly more simple to use.  Also, I know you'll find a happy home on their forums as well.  The people there are far nicer than the people here on the AGS boards.  For example; when you completely ignore their rules, they don't care!  When you repeatedly ask for help and then totally disregard every bit of advice that is offered, they love it!  When you are told not to do something (12 times) and then do it anyway (over and over and over...), they laugh and pat you on the back!

Sure, we'd miss you like crazy around these parts but sometimes a man has to follow his dreams.  Even if it means leavin' old friends behind.

General Discussion / Re: shining force!!!!
Tue 11/05/2010 13:51:57
Shining in the Darkness is one of my all-time favorite games.  I would come home from school, put on Mental Jewelry (Live's first album) and play both for hours (this was back when you didn't need just the sound from the game cause they didn't talk)!  Still can smell that Michigan summer breeze coming through the open window when I have this memory...

I loved Shining Force (and Shining Force II) as well.  I attempted the Phantasy Star games but just couldn't get into them.  Oddly, my brother loved them and couldn't get into the Shining games.  Go figure!

To me it's very obviously fake.  The physics are way off and you can see the water breaking/flowing differently where there is some platform just under the surface.  It's a pretty good effect I'll admit, but still looks fake to me.

Plus the way they are talking about it just feels ... forced.  It, again, just misses feeling real to me.  All in all I'll give this a 7/10 for being convincing, but not believable.

Love Jim's take on the waist-coat (non suspenders!)

I was still not lovin' them pant cuffs over the boots so I did a quick paint-over (MUY rapido)

LEFT - boots over pants
RIGHT - pants over boots w/ less cuff-action going on

Mas botas!!  Good job :)

(Looks like in converting the bg to a lighter shade part of the heel of his boot has disappeared?)

I love the lean western-man look this has.

One thing; he appears to be wearing suspenders no?  They outline his torso a bit too much to my eyes.  Other than that (and the improvements to the boots/cuffs) I dig it!

When can I sit at the poker table with him?

This is going nowhere fast.

icey games - I'm not sure why "my computer crashed" feels like a good reason for not posting properly.  Especially since you've now posted 5 more times in this thread without making the needed updates to the original post/screenshots.

If you get around to having the needed info/pix send me a PM.  Until then, locky-lock.

I had this same thing happen a few years back with my first [only] game.

However I got lucky 'cause the guy/gal was a total idiot and was selling the game, but using my site/link as the download.  So I changed the file that was downloaded to a small exe that said, "You have paid for a freeware game.  I suggest you get your money back and download the game for free as it was intended!"

A few days later it was removed from the site.

In the end there's not much that can be done about this ... it's inevitable I think.
