I'm still okay with the dates ...

However, it's looking like I will most likely be a +1 then so I'm not sure how this works?

I actually much preferred the specks in the lights from the old[er] version.  It gave the room much more atmosphere and mood (for me).

Quote from: DazJ on Tue 02/03/2010 11:14:58If a company YOU own makes a successful series of games and then an outsider comes in and makes an unofficial sequel, your beloved series will always be associated with that from then on. It was THEIR series of games (despite being handed over) and they had every right to do what they did.

I completely understand what you're saying but I look at it this way:

Lack o' Vision ... er ... Activision, doesn't have anything to do with King's Quest other than acquiring the company that acquired the company that was bought out by the company that made the game(s) 15-25 years ago.  They ("they" is used loosely here) haven't released a KQ game since 1995 (I don't count VIII).  If they were smart (which they appear not to be) they would bless this fan project that would/could/might rekindle some interest in products they have collecting dust.

I would like to think, though I find it highly unlikely, that maybe (just maybe) they have some top-secret KQ project in the works which they are afraid this fan project might interfere with.  Were I a betting man, though, I'd not put even a penny on such a wager.

Seems more like they are holding on to some antiquated idea of how to run a business that is not valid in the modern world.  Granted since they are fighting a battle for a franchise that has been dead for 15 years I suppose it makes sense they would stick to a corporate mentality from that long ago as well.

Amen brother.  Amen.

This whole thing sounds really fishy to me...

I think it's either a meek and compliant acquiescence to the C&D so they can work on it "under the radar" and then it will magically "leak" onto the interwebs (and be impossible to contain) or, and I find this the more likely scenario, they are [after 8 years] sick of the project and are using the C&D as an excuse to stop production that the fan(s) will accept.

Personally, if it were my project, I'd tell Activision to suck it and keep making it.

Or I'd do something really smart-ass like change the title to "Keeng's Quest" or "Queen's Husband's Quest" and change some spellings throughout the game and make the enemies a bunch of idiots in a stupidity cult  called "Lack o' Vision".

Meh ... to be honest I don't care either way as I wasn't going to play the game (most likely) anyway.

I just can't stand big corporations pulling stunts like this.

I loathe Valentine's Day.

If a man needs a holiday as an excuse to do something romantic for his lady than he's lost the battle.

I also find it tragic that the modern woman (at least in the U.S.) looks forward to 14 February because she knows it's the only time of year she'll get some romance.

[/rant]

Having said that, I did spend the day with my new lady-friend ... and it was a great day.  She claims to loathe the holiday as much as I do but I got her a dozen roses just in case she was only saying it to agree with me.  I may loathe the holiday, but I'm not an idiot.

Misj' - you are most assuredly not a "hater" in the context I was referring to.  Thank you for your views on the Oscar noms!  I actually enjoyed reading them (even though I don't fully agree :) )  Well done.  I enjoyed the experience of Avatar better than District 9 but were I to pick which was the "better" movie I'd probably have to pick District 9.  I loved it.

Ryan Timothy - shut up you stupid fan-boy!!! ;)

To clarify; I think there's nothing wrong with being a fan-boy!  Just in blindly supporting something because you're a fan-boy.  I am a Cameron fan-boy and am not ashamed to admit it.  I love his movies and his direction style.  I wouldn't defend a movie of his that I didn't like because of this though.  I mean, I loved The Patriot and Stargate but Roland Emmerich has made some shite movies (10,000 BC was a colossal pile of doodoo and 2012 was only a rung or two above 10,000 BC on the doodoo ladder) and I loath the movies when he teams up with that hack Dean Devlin (Independence Day, Godzilla).

Quote from: Andail on Sat 13/02/2010 20:32:07Darth, do you really think this post reads well? Since when are people not allowed to disagree?

I think it reads well and doesn't imply that people can't disagree.

I suppose I can see how it could be interpreted as such.  It was just a comment on the haters which, given how you state your opinion, I would not consider you one of.

Since when can't people offer up their opinions!!! ;)

I am also, in no way, suggesting that anybody else in this discussion is on that bandwagon because I really don't want to clutter up this thread with the backlash such an accusation would certainly cause.

If it soothes the feelings of anybody offended I find the opposite of the haters (fan boys?), who dote on it just 'cause it's Jim Cameron (or any other arbitrary reason), almost equally annoying.

I knew, after seeing Avatar, that it would be the global phenomena that it has become (I'm usually right about these things).  As is always inevitable, with popular things, the haters just love telling everybody why the movie sucked.  Using the same stand-by excuses that are always used; unoriginal story, bad acting, not enjoyable blah blah blah.

Some people found the movie enjoyable.

Some did not.

I think the love/hate debate in this thread is pointless.

I'd like to move on to another aspect of Avatar now that the Oscar Nominations are out.

How do you guys feel about the nominations it received?   Did it deserve the best picture nom?

I'm pleased with everything it received except...

I think Zoe Saldana was freakin' robbed of her nomination.  She should have, in my opinion, been nominated.  While she, in her human form, is never in the movie her Avatar (pun intended) is.  All the facial emotion, body language, etc was entirely her.  This is, to me, the epitome of performance art which is what acting is all about.

General Discussion / Re: Organ Donation
Tue 09/02/2010 15:26:14
I am an organ donor (but I'm keeping my piano).

I figure it's the last gracious thing I can do when I join the dearly, or not so dearly, departed.

Would I prefer that my organ(s) go to somebody I would have, in life, considered "worthy" of the donation?  Sure.

But considering that I'll be nothing but a [hopefully fond] memory and worm food (and will have no idea where they end up or how they were used) I suppose it doesn't really matter to me.

And if there is something "after" ... well I suppose a gracious gift of my guts might earn me some make-up points for my life of sin.

As I did for Mittens (and Wintermeet) in '08 ... I'll probably fly into another country and rent a car to drive to Mittens.  So depending on where I fly into I could probably swing picking up some people!  As the time draws closer and we get more confirmation (location/dates) I'll post again when I make plans!
#1677
I don't think I post a lot ... mostly just lock threads :)  Either way I certainly wasn't bragging!

I just meant that I have not had any long abscenses since I joined here many winter moons ago.  Typically the reasons people use as to why other people have vanished is because they "got a life" or something along those lines.  So I feel a tad douche-ish because I, apparently, have never gotten a life!  Which is, of course, not true.  I have had several.  I just always lose them.
#1678
The only reason I dislike threads like this is because it makes me feel like a douche bag since I've posted virtually non-stop for the last 7 years :P

Quote from: Chicky on Tue 02/02/2010 13:04:03The trailer for Burton's Alice looked super trippy in 3D but there was a clear difference in quality between that and Avatar. Super awesome film, very immersive. Mr Matti, you will not regret seeing it at the cinema!

I'm guessing that was intentional (the difference in quality).  They didn't want to blow people away with the 3D with the trailers.  Wanted to save it for the feature.  It's like how the opening acts at concerts are always a lower volume so the headliner can really stand out.

I don't know if it'll always be like this or if Cameron insisted on it so as to not steal Avatar's thunder.

Haha exactly!  A part of me wants to strangle the scumbag for scamming her ... but at the same time it was a stupid [very stupid] scam for her to fall for.

She called me and asked me what she could/should do.  I said, "you sent him the ring already?" and she said, "yeah..." and I said, "sorry kid, you got screwed"

Marco - glad you didn't fall for it!
