General Discussion / Re: HEY YOU GUYS!!!

This is one of my favorite movies of all time!

It's one of those movies that my brother and I still quote regularly (as passer-by mentioned as well).

The part where Mouth shouts, "oooooohhhhhh shiiiiiiiitttttt!" when he flies out of the water-slide ... we just thought that was the most funny thing ever and would rewind it over and over and over to listen to it.

"Okay you guys; Michael Jackson didn't come over to my house ... to use the bathroom... but his sister did!"
- Chunk

"That's what I said, booty-traps ... be quiet, shhhh!"
- Data

"Ahhh man ... you smell like phys-ed!"
- Chunk

Oh the memories!  I could go on and on!!

Would you be so kind as to say hello to George and Weezy for me?

Quote from: OneDollar on Thu 10/07/2008 20:37:47Theres a road sign near where I live that simply says "Blind People". I never quite took them up on their offer.

On a similar note ... why are there braille dots on the drive-up ATMs?

Also...

One time I saw a building on a busy main street that only had 5 or 6 parking places out front.  On the curb in front of the parking places was painted "Extra Parking in Rear of Building" ... however, if the extra parking was needed (IE the spots were all filled up) you'd not be able to read that message.  Brilliant.

Also ...

The road sign that says "Caution: Bridge Ices Before Road" ... I've always found that to be completely useless because 1) I don't know how long before the road the bridge ices and 2) I don't know when the road ices in the first place.  So that sign serves no helpful purpose.

congratulations on completing your game!

Quote from: Mods on Thu 10/07/2008 01:49:03So, tell me. Why can't these things belong to aliens? Why are you guys saying there are no such thing as aliens? I'm sure there are species out there wanting to focus purely on science and space travel, and not playstations, 9 til 5's and war.

I definitely think there are aliens out there.

I truly believe there are even races of aliens out there that are exploring the universe for other intelligent life (do we qualify?).

But "space is big.  Really big.  You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is."  They could spend eons searching and never find anything.  I think it extremely unlikely that the two separate species/races would ever bump into each-other.  Even if they did they might well not recognize the other as a form of life.

* shrugs *

This is, however, one of those things I would love to be proven wrong on :)

I love the 1st part of the fourth video (the mexican teen getting pawed at).

I can just hear the conversation before the event happend:

[potential] Victim: Hey man, can your cellphone take video?

Friend w/ Cellphone: Why as a matter of fact it can!

[potential] Victim: I have a great idea!  Why don't you, for no reason, record me walking away from you.  As I approach that pole over there I will, again for no reason, step a little closer to it!  Who knows?  It might turn out to be a great video!

Friend w/ Cellphone: What a great idea!

Come on!  Do they really expect anybody not to see how staged that was?  But the "mexican teen swears the footage is real" ... well, if he swears it.

Entertaining? Yes.

Laughably fake?  Indeed :)

As for the footage of the crafts flying about.

They are most definitely UFOs.

Aliens?  Nah :)

I love things like this (bad phrasings, not rape)!

The swim-wear shop's sign that says, "our bikinis are simply the tops!"  I'd hang out in that shop all day long!

Way back in 1989, when Batman (the Michael Keaton one) was in theaters (and we had to look in the Entertainment section of the newspaper to get showtimes) there was an ad for Batman and below it there was an ad for Dead Poets Society.  The top of the DPS ad said "Robin in great!" which lined up perfectly with the bottom of the Batman ad ... so I went to see Batman expecting to see his trusty side-kick.  I was disappointed :)

I think you need more contrast ... the darks and lights blend too well into each other.

Not only that but the perspective, while close, is a little off.

Lastly, some shadows would really help punch this up.

All in all it's not a bad image.

I like the 8-bit version of the 640x480 version!  It's got a good amount of detail without looking too hi-res-y.

Good to see you posting again :)

I am honored to chauffeur such a prestigious celebrity as yourself to Mittens this year :)  I will try to not sputter in awe-struck wonder ;)

Joking aside, this is really cool.  Congratulations!

I really like where this is headed!  This is, by far, my favorite of your works that I've seen!

The lighting effect, while maybe not 100% accurate, is very well achieved.

The magic effect is pretty nice as-is so any improvements will just be icing on the cake!

The elf kind of looks like you (the christmas elf-boy) was that intentional?

love the look...

love the concept...

love the style...

love it!

I might suggest making the colored "bases" of the miniatures taller by 2 or 3 pixels.  It took me a second to see how the colored "sides" were denoted!

I haven't the time (here at work) to do a metallic paint-over on the sprites but you're pretty close ... just need some bright spots!

I'm not wild about the font choice "red player your turn" ... but it's not a deal-breaker either!

Good job!

I think we had a thread like this awhile back ... something about "what inspires you" or something like that?  I can't really remember.

My answer is the same now as it was then; I put on movies to get my creative juices flowing.  Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Galaxy Quest, Shrek (only the first one), etc.  Movies that have a lot of imagination (or just inspire me) really get me motivated to be creative.  Music is part of it ... but I'm more of a visual guy.

I don't know if anybody is interested ... but since we spoke of "activities" I have a few things that are on my "must see before I croak" list and the château we're staying at is close to two of them.

I want to visit Bastogne (the location of the battle of the bulge) and the remnants of the Maginot Line.

Both are easily in a one-day round trip proximity (if I'm reading Google maps correctly)

> Bastogne (my grandfather was in the Battle of the Bulge and this is a historic location)
> Maginot Line (just because of the historical signifigance)

My brother and I are planning a back-pack-across-Europe trip in the next year or two so if I don't get to these things on this trip, there's always the next one.  I was just wondering if anybody was interested in hoppin' in the rental and makin' the trek(s) with me?  If not, no biggie!  I just wanted to float the idea.

Furthermore, I don't know the logistics of traveling across the French country-side (or into Belgium) so if there are difficulties (lack of petrol stations, passport/customs issues, etc.) please let me know!

Quote from: Paper Carnival on Tue 01/07/2008 22:30:37Now I only feel sorry for Tri Synergy studios. They're the ones who lose, and they have no fault at all (unless they knew about this, something which we all doubt)

I have only been keeping up with this topic a little bit ... but if Tri Synergy Studios is the company that produced/distributed the game for them they are every bit as much at fault (in my opinion).

I would never consider [commercially] releasing a game for somebody without thoroughly investigating and testing it to make sure it's legit.

That's like Bush wining, "I received bad intelligence!" trying to lay the blame off on somebody else.

Amazing stuff!  Really good to see an update!  Keep up the [professional] good work :)

I have always interpreted the 2nd Amendment like this:

"The citizenry of the nation have the right to bear arms so that, should the government ever become [again] the tyrannical type (like King George), they could rise up in opposition and have the weapons (arms) needed for such an uprising (to level the playing field)."

Now ... is this practical in today's world?  Not really.  We may have the most heavily armed civilian populace in the world (do we?) but the firepower our military possesses FAR out-strips anything a militia, that might rise against it, could muster. (that's assuming the military leaders wouldn't turn on the government, but we'll leave that possibility out for now).

I think the people of the U.S. take advantage of (dare I say abuse) the 2nd amendment just as they abuse the 1st amendment.

Just because you CAN say something, doesn't mean you should.

Just because you CAN own a firearm, doesn't mean you should.

But we have pop-culture (rap music spot-lighting "thug life"), Hollywood (movies glorifying violence), and fear (all the criminals are so well armed!) pumping the "need" to own a gun into the average American's head and, I'm sad to admit, most Americans aren't the free-thinking type.  Most are highly trained sheep that go with the flow and follow "orders".

Do I think my country would be an inherently safer place with less civilians with guns?  I concede that it's likely to be so, yes.

But fear is a powerful motivator and as long as the "bad" guys have the guns, the "good" guys are gonna want them too.  I am not sure how to solve the problem.

Navigation was a little odd ... the cursor stayed the hand which led me to think I could click on anything so it was a little confusing.  I think a generic cursor which changes to the hand when you're over an object you can interact with would be better.  I don't mind a little pixel-hunting ... but the only time the cursor changes is when you can "go" a direction.

Well, we thought the game would be way too easy if you got that kind of feedback from the cursor.

That's understandable.  My follow-up suggestion would be to change the default cursor to something other than the "hand" which, because of the web, symbolizes that something is a link (clickable) thus makes me think everything is a hotspot.  It's just a suggestion :)

The writing in the diary has some grammar/spelling errors.  Nothing major, but little things (cosy instead of cozy) and some is/are mistakes.

cosy actually is the correct spelling, cozy is the americanisation of the word.

I stand corrected :)

An interesting game...

I didn't get to finish it.  I got a bit stuck:

Spoiler

Found the ring, opened the chest, got the blue pearl, got the rock and moved the lever, read the diary and got the crowbar .... but then didn't know what to do next.  Thought to use the crowbar to move the bars (glowing red) but it didn't work ... then I ran out of play time.

It wasn't too dark on my [laptop] screen.

The inventory/options screen up top ... I think those would work better if just mouseOver would open them rather than having to click.

Last thing; the interactions seems to ... stick ... at times.  Like I can click on something, but then can't click again for a bit of time.  (I don't have my sound on so there might be some sound playing that causes/justifies this sticking)

All in all I'm pleased with it!
