Gotta agree with Radiant about Loom.

However it's not my favorite "best" intro...

That distinction (for me) goes to Wing Commander II.  When the Kilrathi gets up and WALKS over and they the SPEAK to each-other.  It was the first time I'd seen full motion and speech together and it was just mind-blowing!  I will never forget the feeling when I first saw that.  We used to just stop the game, and reload so we could watch that over and over.  Of course, now-a-days that's nothing ... but back then it was incredible!

As for a more modern game ... yeah, I'd agree with veryweirdguy that Half Life 2's intro is great! (though only the first time I played it 'cause you can't skip it and it's annoying past then) Talk about a great intro that pulls you into the game!  Total immersion!

Interesting to see the wide gambit of differing opinions here!

General Discussion / Re: Battlestar Galactica

I have not read any of this thread ... I just want to say that to those who are contributing to this thread, remember that not all parts of the world are on the same schedule.  Some have seen episodes that you haven't, and you've seen some episodes that some haven't.

So I would strongly suggest you use the spoiler tags to prevent ruining the show for anybody.  Also ... if you're going to speculate/guess on certain events and/or theories you should do the same.

I will not be reading this thread because even after having said what I just did it's inevitable that somebody will just spit something out that they shouldn't and I'm not having it ruined for me.

So ... common sense (a dying art) ... if in doubt, use the [ hide ] [ /hide ] tags (minus the spaces).

You know ... were I the owner of an ISP I would totally go along with Virgin (and all other idiots that think this is a good idea) and then when they put it in place I would not follow suit.  I would then make BILLIONS when all their customers leave them and come to me!

Guess it goes to show an ivy-league education doesn't necessarily equate to intelligence.  Dolts.

I hope they do it.

It will be a great way to teach them a lesson they clearly haven't learned.

I really don't get why corporations think they can get away with this kind of shit.

If they do this, people will simply find a new (perhaps better) way of getting online.  It's like the music labels fighting against mp3.  They will not win.  Take away one way of getting something, the people will find another way.  The internet will simply not be controlled in this fashion.  I'm surprised they're even considering it, but hey ... stupidity seems to be what humanity is [d]evolving to these days.

Critics' Lounge / Re: GUI - First Ever

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that BASTARD is the game's title/name?

As for the GUI ... it looks cool enough on a black/empty background.  I'd need to see it over an actual in-game background to make a stronger opinion on it's usefulness!  But it's a good start.

Quote from: Cluey on Fri 18/04/2008 13:57:26Angel Dust, you should try to keep conversation pertaining to the development to PM, otherwise this thread could get very long with just two people talking lol.

I've got you all trained so well ;)

Take heed to what Cluey said please!  It's great if you two hookup for this project ... but take the "team" part outside this thread and leave it for updates and the like.

Thanks.

We had a French exchange student one summer ...

I can now curse fluently in French.

I can call somebody a homosexual.

I can ask "what are you doing tonight?"

I can tell somebody to go f**k their mother.

I can ask a woman to f**k me.

So yeah ... all in all I think I'm going to be very successful when I'm in Paris this August.  I can't forsee a problem.  I just hope those lovely French women are ready for me!!  But don't worry ladies, unlike most stupid Americans I don't start wars and carry guns with me.

edit to correct spelling

The end of an era for sure ... now that it's all done with computers especially.

I will mourn the loss, but celebrate the life.  I hope I make it that long!

So long Ollie.

Quote from: Nacho on Mon 14/04/2008 13:16:23Nobody likes me...  :'(

I was waiting for you to mention me!

I like [just about] everbody on here ... however, if I had to pick just one it would be Señor Nacho.  We chat on MSN regularly and I've actually met him in person!  I can say, without hesitation, that he's my most favorite Spaniard in the world :)

Gotta agree with ProgZ on that (about animatronics).

I don't know who has had the opportunity to ride the new Pirates of the Caribbean at Disney World (in Orlando, FL) but they added in an animatronic Jack Sparrow.  The damn thing is so convincing and believable that I had to do a double-take to make sure it wasn't actually Johnny Depp.  So yeah, cg characters aren't always a good thing.
#2251
I think that CG is just like any other special-effect's tool for movies.

If a tool is used properly, it can work well and be really good.  If abused, it looks like shit.

This is no different with CG effects in my opinion.

There are examples where CG doesn't work and doesn't "fit" into the movie like in the Matrix sequel.  Then there are times when the CG is so perfectly blended with the movie that you don't even think of it as CG like in the new War of the Worlds.

I think what happens is that a lot of directors want to focus the attention on the CG and this is where the problem comes in.  War of the Worlds was a great example 'cause the special effects took a back-seat to the story/acting and thus worked very well and seemlessly blended.  An example of this is the toward the ending when the soldiers are firing rockets at the tri-pod ... you can barely see the tri-pod.  The focus is on the soldiers.

Just like any tool of a trade ... if used properly it produces great results, if not used properly ... well ... you get shit.

There were a lot of "shit" movies and/or special effects before the advent of CGI!

Personally I have always thought CJ was a KGB spy ... sure the KGB doesn't technically exist anymore, but neither do aliens.

i was just wondering if anybody here would be interested in or consider taking part in a monthly ags competition, (mags), for beginners only??

I don't really see much point in having a separate competition for beginners. There's nothing to stop you entering the normal MAGS contest, and whilst you probably wouldn't win to begin with, it would give you the practice you needed to improve and then be able to win later rounds of the contest.

I'm gonna have to go with CJ on this.  I find the best way to learn is to dive in head-first.  There's nothing like a dead-line to make me learn things faster and keep me focused on it!  That's just my two cents.

Also ...

Quote from: BOYD1981 on Sun 06/04/2008 13:35:03doesn't bi-monthly just mean twice a month?

And...

Not trying to be a smartarse here but you are spot on correct and silly of me not to notice it before, I don't know if there is a term for what Andorxor was referring to but it's obvious he meant once every 2 months.

Actually no, bi-monthly means every other month (6 times a year).

So says wikipedia so say we all :)

I didn't say his question was un-reasonable ... but it was answered and back-n-forth at this point (such as "thanks, blah blah blah") will just clutter up this thread (as does me having to explain this over and over again).

Not to mention that the question didn't need to be asked as the answer was already provided if he had read the thread entirely.  Either way, now it's definitively answered so no more on this subject!

Also, subspark, neither of those links work!
#2259
That is one of the rules for sure ... so is this one:

3. If you're not a moderator, don't pretend to be one. If a thread needs to be moved or locked, the moderators will deal with it.

Please take this line of questioning into PMs so as to not clutter up this thread.
