Messages - Darth Mandarb

Squinky - first let me say there's nothing I like more than to see somebody who's art I already admired [worshipped at the altar of], getting even better!  This image just rocks!  I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see an online RPG type thing with this "feel" ... excellent stuff!

When looking at this image in the thought of "what background" to put in ... the first thing that came to mind was blasted-out, razed, and demolish city-scape.  Then I said to myself, "but Darth ... it should be blurry to project a depth of field so as not to add too many more details to an image already flooded with detail!"

So I proceeded to do it ... to put a blasted-out, razed, and demolish city-scape in the background (and make it blurry).

Then I started to color:

I got a little carried away.

If the screenshots you provided aren't the final quality ... then you haven't met the forum rules.   If you aren't far enough along to have final graphics, then you should have waited before posting.  However, I'm not going to lock this thread for that ... what's done is done.

I will, however, lock the thread if you're screenshots remain "broken" links ... they are missing!  Please find a reliable host for the images (there are several threads throughout these forums for just that sort of thing ... do a search!)

I have edited all your posts into one ... please review the rules (in all boards) before posting!

Perhaps you could explain, to those of who don't know, exactly what "busking" is?  Contextually speaking and I can sort of gather an idea, but an explanation would help!

My Votes:

Best Idea - Neil Dnuma
Love the idea behind the image ... the footsteps approach and you can clearly tell what has happened.  It's not the way my brain thinks of appolcolypse, but still, a great image!

Best Design - Rel
Gotta agree with Steve on this one ... the skyline in the background is incredible!  Very Half Life 2 feeling.

Best Functionality - Floskfinger
Seems like the one with the clearest "areas" on it.  You can tell where to walk off (or where you'd come in) from.  Seems very functional as a background.

Best Technique - Neutron
This gets my vote cause I'm a sucker for iso!  And this is great work!

Hey LJUBI ... did you guys decide you only wanted to vote in two categories?  Why didn't you vote all?

I have spent hours dwelling on the right and wrong of capital punishment ...

Is the government's killing of Williams really any different than him killing his victims?

Yes it is.  Quite different.

He was put to death, by the government, for crimes he committed.

His victims were put to death because a psychotic thug (who was a piece of shit and didn't deserve to draw breath anyway) decided he would show just how tough he was by killing innocent people.

But he wrote some books!?!?!  He was redeemed!!?!?!

Give me a break.

If you intentionally murder somebody (like Williams did) then you should pay for it with your own life.  If you take the gift of life from somebody else, you don't deserve to have the gift yourself.  He earned his death.  I don't want to hear that there was some question of his quilt/innocence.  If, after 25 years of appeals and bullshit wrangling, they couldn't prove his innocence then I'm convinced of his guilt.

Stanley Williams committed multiple, cold-blooded, murders.

The government carried out justice.

There needs to be SERIOUS penalties for scumbags who commit murder.  If every person knows they can commit murder, spend 20 years in prison, make millions by claiming "redemption" and writing a few books ... I can't even imagine how many more murders there'd be.

I normally stay out of "heated" discussions like this ... but this one pisses me off too much, so I'm throwin' my hat in the ring:

I too believe in redemption ... if you steal a car, or beat somebody up.  This scumbag killed 4 people in cold blood just to prove that he was bad-ass.  He was the founder of a gang that is now responsible for the deaths of thousands.  He ran up that debt, and last night he paid it.

There should be no discussion here, by my way of thinking.  He should have been convicted, taken out behind the court-yard, and had a "short drop with a sudden stop" 25 years ago..  The real sadness here is that he had the time to write books.  He should have died long ago.  Instead we pay for him to live on Death Row and write books.

I don't deny that he might have been a "changed man" and no, I haven't read his books.  That's neither here nor there to me ... he killed 4 innocent people (that we know about) and he should (and did) die for it.

Rest in Peace?  Maybe ... if you can while burning in hell.

Quote from: Squinky on Tue 13/12/2005 20:44:48I just heard on the radio the other day that the Charlie brown christmas was somewhere around 40 years old....

Movies I consider holiday classics are that Christmas movie with Chevy Chase (?) national lampoons or something like that, and that one with the kid thats always being told he'll shoot his eye out....

Not somewhere around 40 :) A Charlie Brown Christmas celebrated its 40th anniversary this year!  It's definitely a holiday classic of mine!

Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story are also on my list.

As well as Scrooged (w/ Bill Murray).

I have a lot of things that remind me of Christmases of the past.

Cartoons, video games, smells, music ... it all takes me back.

Is this a cutscene graphic?

Is this even for a game I should probably ask first ;)

The reason I ask is because there's almost nowhere for the character to walk on this screen and the areas there are would be tricky to do because you'd have to have the mist surrounding the characters feet!

I think the render is quite nice though.

I believe that's a shadow ...

You've got a good start here, but there are some issues.

Unless there's another light-source behind the TV (if that's what that is?) the degree of shading on the back of it is a bit extreme.  It's too bright on the top to too dark on the bottom, you might consider evening that out.

Also, the line on the back of the TV (the brighter edge line) looks out of place ... should be darker rather than brigther.

The shadow (from the lamp) appears in the right place (basically) but where you have the light level changing on the carpet, the shadow stays the same ... thus making it look like a carpet.

The Table thing casts no shadow yet.

The lamp's light is VERY bright ... makes it look more like an interogation lamp than any interior lighting which'd be comfortable ... I hate to think the glare that'd put on the TV screen :)

Oh ... and BMPs are dumb.  There's no reason to use a BMP online :)

Edit - Nikolas and I seem to agree ;)

David Cross and Jeffery Tambor are comic gold!

I haven't really watched the show but my brother swears by it!  So I'm going to NetFlix it soon.

As for Pamela Anderson vs. Arrested Development ... Pamela has big tits.  That's all the people who decide what times to put what shows care about.  Her knockers will make people watch.  It's pathetic really.  Good, smart, and intelligently written shows get overshadowed by some floozy with big cans.

What a world!

It's good to hear that somebody else likes the show because my brother's tastes can run on the ... unique ... side!
