I don't mind all the grey colors ... there's just not enough contrast between the objects.

Adding shadows would, I think, help to seperate the bed and other objects from the floor.  With a "top down" perspective like this it's easy to lose which objects have "depth" if you don't have shadows.

Also, I think a Zelda style perspective on the walls would help pull this image together.

Here's a [ very ] quick paint-over to show what I mean:

- added perspective to the walls
- moved bed and desk stuff "up" the walls to add depth to them.
- added a door

There'd need to be some depth added to the steps as well but I didn't have time to do that!  I hope this helps!

Critics' Lounge / Re: Gradient or no gradient?

Quote from: Mr Flibble on Wed 30/11/2005 17:27:22The gradients behind the ladder and on the poster were good.

Eek!  Disagree I do!  I think it looks very distracting actually!

I found a few minutes to do a paint-over to illustrate what I meant.

- left wall (with ladder) - full bright red = yuck!  Changed to a different tone of red
- made patterned gradients instead (to cut down file size, you can use the full gradients if you wish!)
- fixed the shadow of the ladder (and added shadow to the trash bin)
- added a noise gradient to the sidewalk area

Unless there's a lightsource shining on the bottom of the buildings the lighter part of the gradient wouldn't start at the bottom.  It's more natural to start with the darker tone at the bottom.

Good luck!

I'd say go with the gradient ...

BUT

- Make it more subtle (less a color change from highest to lowest values)
- Make the darker color start at the bottom rather than the top

Ginny's back!!  Woohoo!

Welcome back!

I'm not sure what kind of update to give ... what's the last thing you remember ;)

Are those screenshots from the "intro" and not "in-game" as the rules state?

Also, they are differing resolutions ... what resolution is the game?

My friend and I one time downloaded a HUGE pack of fonts ... it was like 80MB of fonts and took over 24 hours.

Granted this was back in the day ... we were using a 33.6 modem (not 56K).  I can't remember any significant downloads on the old 56K modem.  Haven't used on in years.  Been fortunate to have broadband everywhere since 2001.

Your gradients are off ...

I did this pretty quickly, but it still illustrates what I mean:

- altered the gradients
- added some shadows
- added floorboard lines
- added baseboards
- added trim around the doors

See how the gradients all work together?  Rather than how you had it where it looked kind of like there was light coming from the corners?  It gives it a little more definition/contrast.

I'd also recommend adding more "stuff" to the room.  It feels very empty.

Hope it helps!

In the future don't start a new thread like this ... you should have PMed me to unlock the old one.

Secondly ... I should lock this one as well.  How long did you work on that second screenshot?  Must have taken you hours!

You should have waited.  But I suppose it does meet the requirements ... if just barely.

I just signed up!

I wouldn't have done it if you weren't such a long standing and well known member though!

Where is the donate money button?  I have 10,000 dollars I don't need just laying around.

My first thought was what ildu said.

They want your style, but with "character sheets" in the DaVinci layout so they can more easily model them.

This idea, by the way, gets me ALL kinds of excited!  Keep us posted 'cause I want to play the game!!

Quote from: DanClarke on Sat 26/11/2005 17:29:24Sorry Darth, i meant size as in number of screens/hours of play etc. Should have made it more clear, doh!

Ahhh!  No worries!

We have, as of now, planned on 10 Unique Locations (2-5 backgrounds each), with 29 Playable Scenes and 26 Cutscenes.  This is subject to change of course ;)

As far as hours of game play ... I'm not really sure.  Definitely a full-length game though.

Quote from: DanClarke on Fri 25/11/2005 22:37:04I played the tech demo and it all looks great, very solid game. I look forward to the actual game. Any idea of size?

Thanks!  Just wait till you play the actual game!  It'll blow the demo outta the water!

As for the file size we aren't really sure.  We've got fully animated cutscenes which aren't in place yet so it's hard to guess.  But I'm sure saying it'll be over 20-30MB isn't unreasonable!

We want to keep the DL size reasonable, (for our dial-up users!) but we don't want to sacrifice our vision just to keep the file size small.  And as mentioned before, you can get a copy of it on CD shipped to you as well!

Interesting discussion ... I don't believe it's the policy of most countries now-a-days to execute spies.  They'd probably just lock 'em in a prison cell with a big-screen TV and 3 squares a day.  (damn political correctness is destroying the world!!)

However, should that policy differ and I was ordered to kill a spy well ...  For me, personally, it'd depend on the nature of the war.

Was I in a foriegn country we had invaded for the wrong reasons and we shouldn't be there in the first place I would, most likely, refuse to kill a spy.

However ...

Were it an invasion of the USA, and my fellow Americans were being killed, and I was ordered to kill a spy I'd be more likely to pull the trigger.  I would get every piece of information from him I could before doing so AND make sure the other side wouldn't be willing to trade this spies life for one of our own they may be holding ...

But then again ... if this 'enemy' had killed anybody I know/love/whatever I'd make them suffer BADLY before pulling the trigger.

Quote from: Tracubetto on Wed 23/11/2005 16:19:19and if you want an italian translation for the tech demo, i'm available! (do you remenber me Darth?  ;D)

Of course I remember you!!

Quote from: i k a r i on Thu 24/11/2005 15:25:38Well if you need an spanish translation, I could help ;D

It's not something we've (the team) really discussed that much but I think it'd be awesome to have translations.  The trouble is, Nataly travels through 5 different language areas (English, Spanish, German, French, and Italian) so it might get downright confusing to translate!   But if you guys feel up to it I'm sure we'd all be interested :)

Thanks for the offers!

Small Update
I have decided to go a slightly different direction with the characters ... to try and make them fit better with the backgrounds.  I'll post an example as soon as I have it.

Aren't you the bad guy from The Stand and some other Stephen King books?

I'm not sure we should be talking to this guy ... he might be trying to convert us to his evil ways!!!

You should have waited to start this thread until you had the screenshots available.

If/When you do have them ready, send me a PM (including the screenshots) and I'll unlock this.

One time I awoke from a sleep and found myself unable to move ...

I was able to adjust the position of my eyes just enough to notice a small red colored figure standing on my chest.  I could actually feel the pressure of his little feet on my sternum.  The small man said nothing, made no noise ... but I could tell he was just staring at me.  (I could just barely make him out in my periphery).  I couldn't look right at him.

I closed my eyes and summoned every ounce of strength and will power I could and made myself move.  I jolted my eyes open and swatted across my chest and I hit ... air.  Nothing there.  The red man had gone.

A few years later I awoke to the same phenomenon and couldn't move ...

I was laying on my back, with my head turned to face the door ... our small cat (which we affectionately called Garbage Kitty 'cause my brother found her in a dumpster.  She walked on three legs 'cause her front left paw was mangled somehow ...) Anyway ... she (Garbage Kitty) was slowly approaching my bed ... stalking ...

She pounced on the bed and started tearing the flesh off my face with her one good clawed hand.  Hissing and spitting and scratching away.  I tried to scream but couldn't ... the pain was VERY real.  Once again I forced my eyes closed and plunged my mental bucket deep into the well of my will power and threw my eyes open and jumped out of bed ... once again ... nothing there and no scratches on my face.

I was convinced I had experienced some strange paranormal events here ... until, a few years later, I learned of a scientifically proven condition called "sleep induced paralysis" (or some such) where you are, physically, in a waken dream state ... your body is still asleep, but your mind is aware of being awake yet not fully outta the dream.

So ...

A few months later it happened again!

This time I awoke, unable to move, facing my window ... which was odd because it was open and I wouldn't have my window open in the middle of December winter in Michigan!  (for those who don't know ... that'd be like sleeping in a freezer)

A huge dragonfly flew in through the window and starting hovering over my face ... it had gigantic fangs and was buzzing and bobbing over me.  Its drool was dripping all over my face ... I sensed great peril without knowing why ... I knew I was in grave danger.  But at the same time I knew it was a dream because 1) the window was open 2) I couldn't move and 3) I had the scientific knowledge of "sleep induced paralysis"

So I dug down deep again and forced my body into motion and threw myself out of bed toward the window and swung around to confirm that the dragonfly was gone ... which of course it was.

Then I realized the cold December air was blowing across my body through the open window ...

Since nobody else has mentioned it ... This type of request is what the ACR Thread is for.

Quote from: Ace_Gamer on Tue 22/11/2005 10:54:47ok. i have a few backgrounds and rooms and wat ever. could make a demo i supose and release it.

not sure how to post screen shots btw

Check the Help Link in the navbar up top for the "how to" stuff and search the boards for places to post screenshots.  There are several options available.  Also, before you release the demo make sure you read the forum rules of the Games in Production board.

Best of luck!

But they do!!

Perhaps the image is just too dark?  I put a blue illumination over everything (except where the soft orange/white light is)
