Messages - Darth Mandarb

#4161
In 1991 I read a book called, 'The Eye of the World' by Robert Jordan (I'm sure many of you are familiar with the Wheel of Time series?)

Well my favorite character (at that time) was Lan.Ã,  He rode a jet black stallion by name Mandarb (which means 'blade' in the Old Tongue).Ã,  I just thought it was a cool name.

I started using that name anywhere you had to enter a nickname.Ã,  The first place I REALLY remember using it was as my callsign in the game 'Wing Commander' way back early '90s.

A few years back I started posting on theForce.net's forums and I was so used to using Mandarb that I decided to mix it with something Star Warsian ... so DarthMandarb was born.

That's about the short and skinny of it ...

Yes, that's what I meant!

Sorry!  It's been awhile since I was actually in AGS using the program!

Josh, as usual, the new stuff looks great!

I am REALLY looking forward to this game.

BTW: I moved this into this board because it wasn't really an official 'Game in Production' thread.

You didn't comment on whether or not Sunny was an idiot (studid person) so I wrote it in decent English.Ã,  It can easily be dumbed up :)

Also, if she's an American she wouldn't use the word 'university' she'd say 'college'.Ã,  I didn't want to change that if she's not an American (though your description of her describes many American women I know)

Sunny,

Maybe you'll read this while I'm back at university next week, or maybe somebody will steal the letter before?

No problem if this happens, since I drew a map on the back that shows you what's up here in Swissland.

Lovely place, it has a beach and parties all night!Ã,  That means from evening to morning with boys and booze (free if you're sexy!!)

Sorry for the long letter, but I know you like to do the reading stuff!

Kisses
Gwenny

PS: I'm going to a place called, "Salzergwerk" tomorrow.Ã,  Wolfie says it's supposed to be more cool than the parties.
PS2: The hair stylists here suck!
PS3: Wolfie isn't a doggy, but a local stud.Ã,  I met him at the party.
PS4:Ã,  Can you wait for me at the airport?Ã,  I've got a lot of stuff!

My observations:
1) If somebody were to steal the letter (hence Sunny wouldn't get it) what difference would the map on the back make?
2) This isn't a very long letter ... I might suggest taking out the apology part.Ã,  Or moving all the PS's up into the body of the letter instead.

Why don't you resize a little.Ã,  That's rather large don't you think?

I think she looks pretty good, if a little like Jessica Rabbit (though that certainly isn't an insult!).

The left eye (her right) is too close to the hair (or the hair is too close to the eye) they bump up to eachother.Ã,  There needs to be some distance between the two.

Her neck looks a little on the thin side (though that doesn't really bother me)

There appears to be a third strap on the dress.Ã,  It goes right up next to her neck.Ã,  I would remove that part and just leave the two (lower) shoulder straps (unless that's intentionally that way!)

I would tone down the dark green outlines on the dig holes.Ã,  They really catch the eye IMO.  Also, as Strazer suggested, adding some dirt mounds (and tools) might add to the image as well.

The 'pointy' mountain doesn't really bother me but I think all the mountains should look more faded out (to convey distance).Ã,  The only reason I say that is because the taller trees on the very right of the image look a little washed out ... so the clarity of the mountains kind of throws my eyes off a little (though just a little)

Having said that I think the image is really good!  I dig the style.

About the character:
I definately say go with the shaded version.Ã,  Both are excellent, but the shaded version is better IMO.

About the backgrounds:
I must say I would suggest spending more time on coloring and shading because if these are just a couple of hours and you come up with something this good, I'd LOVE to see a game [by you] with a little more time spent on the backgrounds!

I'd be happy with a game that looks like this ... but I'd be overjoyed with a game fully detailed.

Just my thoughts.

Inside the GUI you created for your inventory put a 'blank' area above it.  In that blank area put a textfield.  When you want the player to describe the item, just put the text you want him (her) to say inside the textfield.

You can format the textfield to use the same font/color as the player's speech.

Would that work for you?

WOW!!

I have a couple old coins (earliest is 1904!)  That's quite a find!

If I might ask ... where did you find it?

As to the pricing?  I found this link ...
http://www.pcgs.com/prices/frame.chtml?type=date&filename=seated_dime
It doesn't really seem to give prices (though I didn't dig that deep!) thought it might be of use to you.

I'm am using this very method in a 'yet unannounced' project.

juncmodule wrote up the code and it's bloody brilliant!

I wanted to try it out (like Zelda) and had a method that I was using, but junc took it to the next level.

It uses the viewport options through scripting.

It's built into custom functions that you call in each room depending on which way you're able to walk off the screen.Ã,  So, if you can walk off the left side of the screen you call the function 'scroll_west' when the room loads.

You have to include the next background to the 'west' in that screens background (well, all the directions you can walk) so you can have backgrounds that are + shaped.Ã,  But it works great!

It doesn't confuse me (at least, I don't think so...)

I don't know though ... that kind of thing in games has always bothered me a little.Ã,  Because I don't know of too many people that actually get that animated when asking a question.Ã,  I might raise an eyebrow ... but rarely do I throw my hand skyward :)

I don't think it would be a bad idea to have what you suggest ... I'm merely saying I probably wouldn't use that particular animation.

Sorry guys ... I'll get that online as soon as is possible.

There's a few things going on (real world) right now that will be severly limiting my AGS time in the next 2 weeks or so.

If I have ANY time I'll get crackin' on this.  I promise.

Cosmo ... what a great idea for a character name.

Quote from: Edwinxie on Sat 11/09/2004 06:03:33Anyway, the positions open for helping the production of the game are:
Background Artist (EXTREMELY NEEDED)
Beta Testing (Position Unavailable)
Character Artist
Help with scripting (Just helping me with the scripting, not doing the scripting)
If these are the positions open for helping the production, why is Beta Testing listed as (Position Unavailable)?Ã,  ;)

I might suggest changing the career of Bob from Investigator ... it's a bit overdone.Ã,  Other than that alien kidnapping is always a fun topic.Ã,  (Read - been done quite a few times but still fun!)

No C&C on the background, but I'd suggest not making the status bar that color.Ã,  It's rather obnoxious looking.

Have you made serious progress on this game?Ã,  I'm guessing not since you're asking for background artists.

It sounds like you've got the plot thought out.Ã,  Is this going to be a short game?

As stated in the FORUM RULES (Please read over them):

===

* ONLY post a topic for your game if the game has been STARTED, you have a clear outline of the story, and you have two screenshots available to show us.

===

Please post an outline of your story (by editing your first post) soon, or this thread will be locked.Ã,  It would have been locked if not for the screenshots.

I like the idea of a Mario Adventure game.Ã,  All the art-work is basically there for you to use (rip) so you can focus more on game mechanics and story.

However, starting without a story/plot is a sure ticket to an incomplete game.Ã,  You REALLY (REALLY) need to take a break from the graphics and such and focus on the story.

"The prettiest game in the world is nothing without a good story."

I say low-res hand drawn too!Ã,  There's just something more ... magical? ... about it that way.

I would say go with hi-color in AGS, but design the background(s) using a max of 256 colors.Ã,  It's what I do and I like the effect.  You get a VGAish looking game without having to muck about with pallettes.

And I loved (loved loved!!!) the show!!Ã,  So do it right ;)

DAMN!!!

I thought we had it bad down here! We didn't see flooding like that!

Although it's so saturated down here that it's still flooding up when it rains ... though not that bad!

I dread what will happen if Ivan hits us now.  Though I'm still looking forward to it.

Quote from: jetlag on Thu 09/09/2004 20:27:05Wouldn't it be a good idea if the banner changed from time to time?
I believe that was the original idea ... I think we discussed (at one point) making it a rotating banner.

I was wondering if we should have a thread where people can submit a banner and if it's well received could be added into a 'banner collection'.

I even thought it would be cool that each person could make a banner for their AGS game (the whole banner for 1 game) and it would link right to their game in the game's section.Ã,

I think it looks pretty good.

The first thing that jumped right out at me was those 'girders' on the ceiling.Ã,  They look ... off?

The lighting seems pretty consistent.Ã,  Though there are a few areas that appear a little flat (as Gilbot pointed out).

Also there are a few areas that should probably have some shadows that don't (the floor areas by the bed and 'shower' thingee)Ã,

Under the 'shower' thingee hood those shadows should probably extend further down as the light sources are directly above it.

Also, under the hood there, the lighting effects on the wall details look backwards.

I'm only being so picky 'cause I like the image.Ã,  Keep up the good work!

The leaves on the shrub, and on the trees, need to also cover the branches a little.

The way it is now they don't look like leaves, they look like big green masses attached to the ends of the branches.

I like the character and I'm interested in the 'Yodel' option.
