I have, in light of a suggestion by earlwood (who didn't like my character) begun work on a new style of character.

This is just the front view:

NOTE:  I am shifting the game into 640x480 mode to accomodate the larger (but vastly more detailed) characters.  Not to worry ... I'm still going to be using the Slave I I worked soooo much on!!

Let me know if you think this character style will work ...

How can I improve it?

Thanks for all your praise guys and thanks to those with the crits too!

With all of your advice this pic turned out awesome!

I'd go through this will all my backgrounds for the game but then you'd not want to play it 'cause you'd already have seen all the bgs!!

Beautiful man ... I thought we all had a lot going on emotionally that day but geeze man ... I can't even imagine another loss like that on that day.  That you, and your family, made it through is a testiment to your strength.

I had always hoped that, maybe, for our generation it would be, "Where were you when the Challenger exploded", I wish it were still only that.

I won't (As Andail) wished, get into politics.  Rather let's leave it as a tribute to the memory of that day.  I can't believe it was already two years ago.  The image is still so powerful in my head.  It feels like it was yesterday.

I was, at that time, living in Michigan.  I got to work and was called into the showroom where the TV was on.  "A plane hit the trade center!"  I was asked if I thought it was an accident.  I immediately suspected a terrorist attack because I know that planes just don't hit buildings anymore, not now-a-days.  Then right in front of my eyes the second plane comes flying in.  I saw it happen.  The feelings and emotions I felt aren't something I can properly put into words.

I spent that whole day glued to the TV in shock.  It's mostly a blur ...

I wrote about this in another thread awhile back.  The night after, on the 12th, my buddies and all met up at the pub.  It was karaoke night.  Nobody was singing.  The bar wasn't even playing music.  It was quiet in the pub.  Just the ocassional clang of a mug being set down.  Then a fellow got up to the mic and sang the national anthem.  Immediately everybody was on their feet, those wearing hats removed them.  Hands of civilians were over hearts and some military were saluting.  EVERYbody was singing along and EVERYbody had tears in their eyes.  It was one of the most emotional moments of my life and a real tribute to American society.  Sure we had grown aloof and distant to one another but that flame that is national pride and patriotism hadn't been snuffed out.

On the 14th (the first day they opened air-travel) my buddy and I flew to Florida.  We were in the airport for like 4 hours.  Now, normally, this would have been chaos.  But there wasn't one single person who complained.  Everybody was so polite to one another and treated everybody with respect.  There are those now, who after the fact, complain about the pumped-up security at places like airports.  But I will say only this about the subject; if sacrificing some small bit of my civil liberties is the price to pay to avoid having to see two buildings collapse and go through that again, I will gladly pay it.

While on the plane there was a man of middle eastern decent who kept getting up and walking up and down the isle.  I'll admit it was making me a little nervous.  He had his little kid with him, but I had seen the pictures of the 9/11 terrorists with their kids, so this didn't lessen my tension.  Everybody kept staring at him and giving him dirty looks and you could just see the questions in their eyes.  Finally I got up and said, "Look man, I'm sorry, but you've got to sit down and stay there.  You're making a LOT of people nervous".  He looked me dead in the eyes and said, "Imagine how I feel."  That single moment put it ALL in perspective for me.

I won't get into the rights and wrongs of racial profiling or any of that crap.  I will simply say that this statement just made me realize how impactful the event had been.  To everybody.

Welcome ShadowZ!

"You've taken your first step into a larger world"

Good luck with AGS!

Darth Mandarb's Advice:
When you get your first great idea for a game (and you will) don't immediately post the idea in the Games in Production thread.

I made this mistake ...

Wait until you have a lot of it done so that you can release periodic progress updates while still working on it.  Trust me on this ... I came runnin' in here posting all about my next GREAT game and it's still not done and that was about 5 or 6 months ago!!

I look forward to seeing what you're capable of!

It's all about perception I agree.  Although, I think an invasion of Iraq to remove a dictator differs quite a bit from crashing commercial airliners into buildings.

I hadn't heard about the connection between Hinkley and Bush ... what was the connection and where'd you hear about it?  I'm a historian and I would like to read about this!

QuoteMaybe I've just heard too many conspiracy theories.
Eh ... that's cool.  Conspiracy theories are fun :)

I love Yak's (subtle) tribute to Inspector Gadget!

I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring on this one:

A mobile phone 3000 years from now:

Why does it look like that you ask?

Let's look at that same phone again in the year 5003 ...

After the apocolypse.

I am not a huge fan of word game threads, however ...

Q: What is the difference between 'word game' threads and 'talk like a pirate day' threads?

A: Perception of what is fun.

YOke - the U.S. does have WMD 'coming out our ears' but we're not a terrorist run, third-world country either.  Nor are we a dictatorship.  Yes our foreign policy might come back to 'bite us in the ass' in the future but part of being a super power is the projection of power.  If we don't act now the alternatives are more assured than what might happen in the future because of that action.

rant
I agree that some of the discussion in this thread has degenerated to bickering.  I think (and this is in no way a jab at you DG) the wording of the subject is the cause.  This is a hot enough topic without the subject being worded insultingly.  With that subject it causes people's blood to be up before they even start reading.

I think a lot of the problems of this thread are representative of the entire forum.  I think it's a very similar situation the "Homestar Runner: Too Popular" thread by Jam Torkberg.  He states how 'veteran' fans resent the newer fans because they aren't original members of the club.

I think that happens a lot on these forums (especially in the GenGen).  I've heard some n00bs say some things that make a lot of sense but they're completely discredited because somebody (who has been here longer) disagrees with them.

I think these forums suffer (just a little) elitism from the older members.  I think some of them demand respect because they've been here longer.  But, as the old saying goes, "Respect is something you have to earn."

Boy are you gonna get it for this thread :)

I do that all the time .. though I was blessed with some native American blood in my veins so I can go a few days before it really becomes an issue!

There are times when I forget to eat even.  I start working on something and get so focused that I tend to shut off the world ...

Haha!  My old roommate is a HUGE conspiracy theorist and he's convinced that the U.S. gvt. created the SARs virus.

He thinks it was released in China (who were a hot spot a few months ago) so that the CDC could come sweeping in and save the day and then China is indebted to the U.S. and the crisis is averted.

Hahah!!

Everybody knows that SARs was created by Bill Gates.

** DM throws his hat into the ring

There are people in this world who do 'bad' or 'evil' things.  Those people NEED to be stopped.

Asking/Telling them to stop isn't going to do it.

The frickin' wussy world at large is far too PC minded and pacifistic.

QuoteThat is no excuse for the US Army to destroy a hospital or a school -- I expect better of them than that.
They wouldn't just blow up a hospital unless they were being attacked from within it.

And, in my opinion, if the 'hospital' is empty of people and is full of weapons (as most of them were), it ceases to be a hospital and becomes a weapons depot.

This whole problem would never have happened if the UN had done what it should have in the first place and supported this endeavor.  So, is the U.S. crawling back?  No, they're graciously allowing the UN to do it's job.  The UN should be humbly bowing and scraping their way into Iraq.

I should think 30 fighter jets (even in disrepair) could pose a pretty substantial threat to a neighboring country.  They could pose a bigger threat than say ... I don't know ... 3 commercial airliners??

hmmm ....

edit - dammit!!  I argued :)

Why do you care man?  You're a nihilist ... you're supposed to care about nothing!

"All we are saying .... is give peace a chance"

Max2003 - I usually create my own characters and do all the work myself.
This is Kafka's Coffee, which has some great tutorials on creating elements for your game.

However, if you're looking for characters that others have created that you can use there is a thing, I think called Instagame?  I'm not sure of the link, but somebody in here will know it.

There's also juncSource which has a collection of characters.

Hope that helps!

I agree with Rebel, and Bob, and Barcik.  Just as Andail agrees with DG, Butcher and Naranjas.

Neither side is right or wrong.  (Though each side feels strongly that they are right)

Andail said, "Thanks DG, Butcher and Naranjas and all those who try to clarify things...don't think it will help, though."  Which is a good statement because he agrees with them.

I could say, "Thanks Bob, Rebel, and Barcik" for the same thing.  It's all perspective depending on which side you take.

I don't see a resolution to this debate.

I'm not going to argue my views in this thread (Lord knows I did enough of that in the famous War Unleashed thread) ... I'm just going to enjoy reading everybody's rants!

Sorry man I forgot to mention that you need to remove the spaces ... which I don't think I needed to put in there.  Like this:

<html>
<head><title>Title of Page</title></head>
<body bgcolor="efefef">
<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=5,0,0,0" width="100%" height="100%">
<param name=movie value="URL OF FILE HERE">
<param name=quality value=high><param name="LOOP" value="false">
<embed src="URL OF FILE HERE" quality=high pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="100%" height="100%" loop="false">
</embed>
</body>
</html>

The HTML parser in browsers isn't recognizing those tags 'cause of the spaces!  Sorry, I didn't realize I could include html code directly in these forums so I added the spaces to 'trick' the system!  If that still doesn't work, let me know and you can e-mail me the swf file and I'll create the page for you and e-mail it back!

YakSpit - Sobchak is a hero of mine :)  One of my favorite movie characters of all time!!

Is there anybody in these forums who is either from Iraq (or was there during the war or now) or works in the US gvt. and was directly involved in war based decisions?

Everybody (myself included) is making assumptions about what is/has happening/happened over in Iraq (and in the US gvt.) that they have no way of knowing for sure about.

So some of us agree with what's going on and some don't.  Neither side can 100% prove their 'facts'.  It's good that we all feel so strongly in what we believe but in the end, none of knows for sure.

So I'm not going to argue this anymore.

Can't we all just get along?

Peace I'm out!
