As some of you may know I proposed to my girlfriend recently.

We have decided that we are not getting married though.

We are getting gay married.

I think this highlights exactly how stupid this entire debate/topic truly is.

When a homosexual eats, (s)he isn't "gay eating", it's just eating.  It's not about "gay marriage"; it's about marriage equality.

Speaking only for the USA (because remember, Americans don't care about the rest of the world) this should NEVER have been an issue here.  As American citizens we are "equal" and entitled to the same "inalienable" rights and the constitution (amendment 14) grants marriage as one of those rights.  That's ALL that needs to be said on this matter.  End of debate.

The opposition comes from people that follow out-dated ideology from the parts of old books they choose to pay attention to (while ignoring the other parts).

When applying common sense and logic to this situation we free thinking humans in 2013 can obviously see that those in opposition to marriage equality are going to look as foolish and ignorant as those who opposed abolishing slavery, or granting women the right to vote.  They are history's poster children for ignorance and bigotry.  We cannot expect these people to see this as they tend to ignore history (or science, logic, etc) and only adhere to an ideology/dogma that was laid down by iron-age (and murderous, bigoted and misogynistic) men that has been translated, re-translated, edited and pruned (to suit their needs) over the last few thousand years.

Marriage equality is a foregone conclusion and all this subject does is highlight just how little we've evolved as a species since we came out of the trees.

Sad really.

A fully functional design!
  • The navigation is easily identified
  • The header is clearly defined (stating who/what you are)
  • content area is obvious
Some critiques:
  • You have the over-all width set to 1024px (984px in the content area with left/right padding of 20px).  This will cause a problem for those running at 1024x768 resolution (which there are still a lot of people using!).  The vertical scrollbar will make the content width overflow on the sides and you'll get the horizontal scrollbar as well.
  • The color for your name in the header feels off to me (too dark).  Maybe if it were white and the '// game programmer' was a light shade of grey?
  • I've never been a fan of the placement of the name/logo (bottom-right corner) like that but it's popular with 'tech' type sites so while I might suggest playing with that placement I think, in the end, it's fine where it is!
  • The border-radius that you've used feels a tad too much!  Maybe cut that back to 3px or 4px?  I've just been getting a sense lately the really rounded designs are going 'out of vogue' (nod)
  • Also, on the border-radius; CSS3 is, sadly, still not widely adopted so you should probably use the vendor prefixes in your CSS (such as -webkit-, -moz-, etc) to get as much cross-browser compatibility as possible (with the box-shadow declarations as well)
  • The footer text (on my screens) is VERY small.  It's not a big deal though as most visitors don't even read what's in the footer!

Okay, I'm done!!

It's hard to give advice for logos without knowing what the logo is for!  Given the background imagery of the shape-thing is 1s and 0s I'm gathering the 'B' is for binary?  What is the 'L' for?  Is this a 'games company' logo?

The two things that stand out to me are the "BL" feels crammed in there and, not knowing the significance of the shape, I don't much care for the shape of the background thing (or the huge photoshop bevel)!

This was the first thing that popped into my head (but it's a big departure)

Also, if you need/want to keep the shape you have now; I'd move the text next to it (all we can see if a cut-off B and L) down a bit to align with the top/bottom of the shape's right most edge!

Hope it was helpful.

Can't leave a released game thread unlocked awaiting somebody's reply (no idea how long that might take) but Michael can easily reply/acknowledge either in a PM or in the completed games thread!

I have added the link to the completed game's thread in the original post as well!

Congrats on finishing!

Best Kickstarter video/pitch I've seen!  I threw some coins at it (nod).

I don't think it not being in USD was a huge factor in it not getting funded.  I've contributed to projects that weren't USD.  I could see how it could put some people off I suppose.

I think the problem was they didn't really have anything to show but mock-ups and promises.  Some big names in the industry can get away with this (on Kickstarter) but the "little guys" need to have something to show.  Even if it's just pre-alpha game play footage.  Something.

Quote from: AGA on Fri 24/05/2013 12:58:41An initialism is pronounced letter by letter (FBI, CIA, AGA), while an acronym is pronounced as one word (NASA, NATO).  Which seems to be what you're saying?  Don't see how this goes against what I said before!

Well AGA can be spoken phonetically, like "ah-guh" where-as FBI cannot be spoken phonetically (well you could say "Fibby" I suppose but that's silly).

So by what I think/thought the distinctions are; AGA would be an acronym.  Though I've always said it as an initialism, A-G-A rather than ah-guh.

Here is an article about the Difference Between Acronym and Initialism which seems to be what I was thinking, but if you look up Intialism on Dictionary.com the first definition seems to be the same as acronym.

I'm so confused.

Quote from: AGA on Fri 24/05/2013 00:33:27Mittens people have often pronounced it aga like the oven.  I do not approve!  It's an initialism, damnit.

I thought an "intialism" was something that couldn't be said phonetically?  Like IBM or AGS.  An "acronym" is something that can be phonetically spoken like NATO or LOL.

Have I been living under a falsehood all these years?  Say it isn't so!!

English is a fickle little bitch [of a language].  With all the variations and exceptions to the rules I don't know why we even bother with rules (GASP!! No rules?!?! (nod)).

So you read the rules, then decided to ignore them anyway?

When you have the second screenshot let me know and I'll unlock the thread.

I have always used the hard G because, in my head, I'm thinking "Graphical" for the G sound and since I'm phonetically speaking an acronym so I take into account the word the initial comes from.

I don't much care what the creator of the file format calls it because, until yesterday when I read about this on Reddit, I didn't even know the guy's name.

20+ years of me, and millions of others, calling it GIF (hard G) makes it a valid pronunciation IMO (as valid as JIF).

I have never had issue (aside from slight teasing to make myself feel superior) with those that do the soft G.  It's not like I don't know what they're referring to!

I love the concept of this site.  I had a similar idea a few years back (though my idea focused solely on a marketplace for AGS made games).  I still intend to do it someday... but no immediate plans.

Anyway...

While I think the concept/idea has merit there is one major issue I see standing in the way.  I am not trying to be rude, but constructive (I've been told I come across as arrogant when I offer this kind of advice so be forewarned).

The site design is completely non-functional.  It's VERY unclear how to use/navigate the site (I don't even see a navigation).   There are some icons that appear to be navigation but they don't actually do anything and are located in a 'cold' spot of the layout.  The layout is confusing and, over-all, you're unsure where to start or even what to do.  This will put a LOT of visitors off.  With something like this (where you want people to spend their money) one of the most important things is an easy to use website that is inviting and intuitive.

I would recommend taking a look at Twitter's Bootstrap front-end framework or even some of the pre-made templates that are available from WrapBootstrap if you want to keep it "in house" or, if there is money available, hire a professional designer to do the site design.  If you are serious about making a go with this project, which it seems you are, don't cut corners on the site design.  I've seen it so many times (near 20 years working in web development) where this kind of thing happens and a project fails almost before it begins!

I hope you find this helpful rather than arrogant.  I really like the idea and would love to see it become successful (anything that screws major greedy corporations makes me happy).  Good luck!

3 words.

Perspective.  Perspective.  Perspective.

Here are the perspective lines as you have the image rendered:

Here are proper perspective lines for this scene (using a single vanishing point):

Here is a very quick rendering of how the elements in the room would fit with the proper perspective:

There are a TON of tutorials on the web (Google is your friend) that you can read and in 10 minutes have a very good beginner's understanding of perspective and how to use it.

I hope it was helpful and good luck!

My problem with this project (and others like it) is that while all the stuff they do show looks nice enough, there's nothing actually showing the game itself.

Just mockups and fancy talk about all their grand ideas.  Nothing "in game" (actual game screens with menus and character(s) walking around).  They have a video specifically titled "gameplay details" that doesn't really show anything about gameplay. Don't get me wrong; I love grand ambition (we're all guilty of it at some point) but in order to fork over over my coins I need more than ambition.

To me this is just not **ahem** in production enough to make it worth layin' down my cheddar.  That's not to say I haven't backed projects with more or less the same amount of "nothing to show" but it's usually what puts me off from backing.  The concept is interesting and the pre-vis stuff they have is pretty so I might back it as the deadline draws nigh but I dunno.  I'd like to see more!

General Discussion / Re: Game Developer? Why?

For me it's that "something from nothing" feeling.  You have an idea for something (story, movie, game, website, etc) and you, from nothing, create something.

It's an amazing feeling of satisfaction watching it grow and evolve as you develop it.

Personally I don't care how many people download it.  If only 1 person plays/reads/views it I just hope that 1 person enjoys and appreciates it.

Oh, and for the chicks (nod)
