No real weight gain thankfully.

I knew, when starting the quit smoking process, that a lot of people replace the cigarettes with near constant snacking so I made a VERY conscious effort to avoid snacking.

The trick I used was turning the whole thing into a challenge.  I will not let smoking win!!  I even kept my last pack of smokes on my nightstand next to the bed (a bit sadistic I know).  Stared at it for weeks refusing to let it win.  By making it a challenge I put myself in competition mode.

And I hate to lose.

8 May 2004 ... my last cigarette.  Ever.  I have not smoked anything since then.  No cigars.  No weed.  Nothing.

How long did I smoke up to that point?  Over 10 years (about 16 on-and-off).

How did I quit?  I realized how stupid smoking is and I stopped.  Cold turkey.

Was it hard?  One of (if not the) hardest things I've ever done.

How did I pull it off?  Willpower.  Nothing else.

The first month was, I admit, sheer torture.  Constant cravings and withdrawals.  After a month it got easier.  After two months it became a personal challenge; I will not lose now!!!

Please stop smoking!!  In a month of not smoking you'll feel SO much better and be shocked at how much easier certain things are.  Even things you didn't realize you were having a hard time with (especially stairs).  I know a lot of people make all the excuses in the world (we've gotten into this on here before) but there really is no [acceptable] reason to smoke.  It's all willpower.  You know you should stop.  So just stop.  If you feel like the e-cigs are a good stop gap go for it.  But you're just substituting one vice for another and all it does is drag out the quitting process.  If you're still pretending to smoke it's a short step back to smoking.

Just my two units of currency!

Good luck!

A few years ago I had an idea to do an adventure game on Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors.  Never got much past the idea stage though.  Always loved that cartoon when I was a kid.

The idea sounds intriguing!  However I have to be evil moderator guy here...

The first screenshot doesn't appear to be "in game" (as the rules require).  The second seems more likely in-game but I see no GUI/characters/etc so I'm not sure?

Don't worry, I'm not going to lock it now (as I can tell you did read the rules) but please update the screenies to reflect how they look in game!  If you have any questions feel free to PM me anytime.

Thanks and good luck on the game!

I remember that workshop... very cool.

I don't think it should be a problem to separate them because, IMO, the workshop doesn't belong in the competitions section anyway.  It's more like a multi-tasking Critics Lounge thread to me (don't think there should be a winner to the thing as it seems more useful as a "class" rather than a competition).

Just my $0.02 cents USD currency.

I included that completed games link at the top of the first post (easier for people to find)!

Congrats on finishing!

Excellent-ness!  The saga continues!!!

Interesting question.

Personally I'd make this dynamic and something the player can select for themselves.  Like part of the "options" menu/configuration.  That way you can have both options catered the to the player's needs/wants.

My personal opinion; I'd find teleporting annoying.  I don't know there's something... zen... about waiting for the character to arrive where you clicked.  A patience in game-play.

The Rumpus Room / Re: Happy Birthday Thread!

Thanks guys!  Yes we Sith celebrate birthdays.  We go around choking people with our minds and locking threads.  It's all in good fun though!

Happy [belated] to Baron as well :)

Are these actually in game screenshots?

I don't see any GUIs or cursors (maybe something that might be a cursor (the little white dots thing)).

Also, if you want feedback on how people feel about this type of graphical-style please post in the Critics Lounge (or adventure related chat if you don't want critics on the style) as that kind of feedback doesn't belong in the production thread.

No worries!  Good luck with the production :)

General Discussion / Re: Diet weight loss
Fri 15/02/2013 18:13:55
Andail and MurrayL - I was exactly the same for so long.  When I graduated highschool I was 6'3" (1.91m) and was 145lbs (~66kg).  I ate ANYthing I wanted and just wouldn't gain any weight.  It wasn't until my late 20s that my metabolism caught up to me!

Now I maintain about 220lbs (~99kg) now (which I find to be a healthy weight for me at 6'4" now).

I agree with what Ghost said in that, "diets are individual to the person on them".  You have to find what works for you.  For me it's just a matter of portioning what I eat.  I pretty much eat whatever I feel like, I just don't over eat.  I never eat to the point that I feel full (this is the hardest part to adapt to).  I eat enough food to know that, 10 minutes after I stop eating, I won't be hungry anymore.  Granted I rarely eat fast food and my intake of fried food is limited to one "cheat" day per week but still... I never really feel I'm not eating the things I want to eat.

Yeah... that was a bit vague!

Inertia, in space, is much easier to arrest than it is on Earth (where gravity is boss).  So by firing retro/reverse thrust on a craft in space you could, technically, just halt it's movement nearly instantaneously.  Technically there'd still be "easing" but it would be so fast as to be, essentially, non-existent.  That's all I meant by "not necessary".  I saw a documentary on this a few years ago (tried to find it on youTube but couldn't) where it explained this better than I can!

Hollywood/Video Games have a long history of ignoring science/physics in the name of making their product more fun and/or easy to relate to for humans.  So movie/game space craft tend to mimic terrestrial flight characteristics because that's what we humans expect to see (and are used to seeing).  The reality of space "combat" would, most likely, be a vastly different experience!

I've always found these kind of space sims a little... I don't know, "wrong" feeling.  Even back to early ones like Wing Commander and X-Wing.

I mean now-a-days our state of the art fighter craft do not have to see the bad guy to take 'em out.  They just point and click on the radar screen (or HUD).  So it seems to me that futuristic space-sims should have similar (or more futuristic) tech.  Less cockpit view and more tactical view (like a command center).  This, however, doesn't lend itself to traditional (fun) game-play mechanics for a space sim!

I think what you've demoed here is off to a great start but I think it needs some tweaking.  I agree with Andail (and others) about the easing... that's essential (though I would argue that, given the physics of space flight, it's not really necessary it's just ... traditional) :)

My suggestions:
1) do not use the mouse to 'aim' while hovering left/right to adjust trajectory.  Put cross-hairs (some kind of retical) in the middle of the viewport.  Then use the keyboard or mouse to control the motion of the ship to line up the crosshairs on the target and then click to fire (maybe right clicking could switch weapons or something).
2) unless there's a specific reason (in game) to not have vertical movement I'd add that in.  A space ship that can only move left to right (horizontal) seems odd and not very effective as a fighter craft!

I look forward to seeing where you take this!  I've wanted (for years) to make an AGS space sim!

Yes!  By all means fill up those slots!  We still haven't been able to say 100% if we can make it so let those who know for sure have the available slots :)

She and I have no problem at all staying in a hotel and commuting to Mittens.  Given that we [most likely] can't stay the entire week (she wants to see several countries while we're over there) it's probably for the best anyway if we don't use up two beds!

I'm getting confused here...

m0ds are you working on this game?  Or did you just dig up a 7 month old thread?

arjon are you working on this game or did you just link to the facebook images?

secret fawful are you still out there somewhere?

Thanks for the clarity!  All around good-i-ness.

You know what is an absolute art form?

Trolling.

I would say, at this point, there's a solid 80% chance (and growing) that Tarah and I will be able to make it.

I'll omit the boring details but the odds are improving daily!

If the space fills up it's not a problem... she and I can get a hotel (and will probably have a car as well!).
