Hey there!

Thanks a lot for the comments!

@Ionias: Masterpiece, huh? OK, I'll go for the extra shadows.Ã,  Ã, ;) By the way, I'm using Photoshop according to one of those Kafkas-Coffee-tutorials about indexed colors.

@MrColossal: I see... I guess fading the edges will be my next lesson. Thanks for that!

@Helm: Yeah, I know about the scaling. This is what gives me real headaches. At last, somebody recognizes the weirdness of that lamp, though.Ã,  ;) Oh, about framing a sports-car: Jerry Seinfeld does it! What a reference.

@Farlander: Yupp... Maybe I should have mentioned that I used that hotel room from FOA as a reference. I learned from it. I didn't copy it. At least I tried. Thanks for the encouragement.

@Aussie: Consistency is the most important thing in my eyes. I'll just see which improvements I can still make without losing control over my "style".

@all: God, I love this community. Talk about being helpful. Thanks!Ã,  ;D

May 16th? That's my birthday! Why, thank you very much indeed. I didn't even think you'd remember.  :D

Whatever, good luck with all that.

In that case the man would be Q's nephew, for the picture (it's not supposed to be a TV screen) is showing one of those Aston Martins James Bond is driving around in.

Anyway... copying pics into a BG like this sucks. I see that now.  :)

Ahoi.

Wow, I felt like phony when I thought: "Let's see if someone answered my post ... after like three seconds." Ã, ;) And here we go. Well, well, well... Thanks a lot!

As for the shadows: If you look at this crummy dark blob beneath the plant, you'll see my stand on shadows and 2D. Ã, ;) I agree that more "shadows" couldn't hurt.

The lighting: Yes... the room itself is a lot brighter. I just put an almost-black layer on top of the whole thing, made it transparent and brightened some areas. Maybe not the best choice.

As for Sophia and Allan: Hehe... the color of the walls is actually derived from that hotel room in FOA.

Strange... nobody said anything about that stupid lamp that I find oddly out of place and way too big. Ã, ;)

Anyways, thanks a dozen for the replies/advice! I'll be working on some changes.

Here's the version without that darkening layer on top:

Hey there!

I consider this my breakthrough.Ã,  :D After all those years I finally managed to come up with a technique to draw a room that pleases me. So, what do you think? I know, there could be more furniture. But what about the general style? Is it any good? Can I at last dare make my first game?

What a great day this is. See you around!

Hey there!

Wow, this is exactly the kind of inspiration and incentive I needed! Thanks a dozen for that, Sektor. Now, there's no stopping me. I hope ...  ;)

See you!

Hey there!

I just finished playing your game. Great job for a first-timer! I loved the movie-like atmosphere, what with the cutscenes and all. And, oh, that last guard's screeech on the floor was hilarious!Ã,  :D

Anyway, here's some things that disturbed me a little:

Spoiler

1. The rope over the wall. Not really a puzzle.

2. I know, that adventure game heroes are a shifty bunch, but... killing a guy just to get his fishing rod? Come on, that was too much.

3. The elevator incident. Unless Stan has a robotic arm with palms of steel (like that guy in I, ROBOT) his hand would have been crumbled to ashes after passing the 8th floor.
[close]

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed playing your game, and I will definetly play the next installments!

See you!

Hey Sektor!

Finally I got to play your game. And what can I say? Certainly nothing, that hasn't been said in this forum. It's great. Really great. Graphics, gameplay, puzzles, dialogues, story, sounds, atmosphere ... everything is just perfect.

Just wanted to say that.  :D

Dammit. I really am dumb ... Show things from the front. Draw from the foreground back. It seems so obvious ... now. D'oh ... Ã,  :)

Well, whatever. It's all your guys' fault, when I have no excuse left, to not work on my game now.  ;)

Thanks!

Reverse psychology, eh? That should work. I feel dumb.  :-\

Critics' Lounge / Scaling Problem
Tue 07/02/2006 22:08:55
Hey there!

I've been trying to draw my own backgrounds for quite a while now, and I guess I got the hang of the basics by now. But there is still one particular problem that is bending my mind into a pretzel: The mystery of scaling. Here's what I mean:

X marks the spot … erm, the vanishing point. Now, the room and the object themselves should be OK. The character seems fine, too â€" unless he walks a few steps down. Then the object “outscales” him by far. My problem is: I don't want to scale up my character-sprite. I don't recall Indy being scaled to that extend … or any other adventure-celebrity.

What am I doing wrong? Or I am I missing a certain issue regarding vanishing points and dimensions? Do I have too fool the player's vision by not scaling the objects in the foreground correctly? Or is it just a matter of limited walkable areas?

Help me! Help me, please! I'm desperate. This is the last obstacle in my way. When this problem is solved, I'll be able to finally make my first game. Bah, who am I kidding? I'll find another obstacle.Ã,  ;) Whatever, advice is very, very welcome!

And I hope, to be in the right forum. If not, sorry, and feel free to move it whereever.Ã,  :)

Thanks!

I'm german. 'nuff said.  ;D

No, actually this is what a friend's grandma heard, when I told her my real name. Obviously she got it all wrong.

The Rumpus Room / Re: Best ROCK song ever!

Best Rock-song ever? Some glittering bands are obviously missing in this list:

How about:

Bon Jovi - Raise your hands (As heard in SPACEBALLS)
Alice Cooper - Dirty Dreams
Poison - Unskinny Bop
Firehouse - Get In Touch
Mötley Crüe - Kickstart My Heart
Winger - No Man's Land
Slaughter - Spend My Life

I'm all out of breath ... gotta stop. So many cool songs out there ...  ;D

I say! The style looks great to me. But there is something not right with that submarine pic. I don't really know, what it is. Maybe the perspective? Maybe the black outlines are too thick and dark? I really don't know. Whatever ... great work. Really great!

I just hope, that this sub is a kind of a museum. Otherwise the security precautions would be a tad careless ... for a military thing.

Hey, this zombie really looks cool. Looks, like he got stuck under a lawnmover, which is a good thing ... for a zombie, that is.

And that pirate is totally cool, altogether. I would just put the waist a little higher. One or two pixels up, and everything's fine.  :)

And, oh, what about a sword or one of those pirate-guns dangling from his belt? That would be swell.

Hehe, nevermind. Just as we're speaking, I'm putting in the logo of my own super sophisticated, top-noctch game creation studio ... which has never even produced anything.  ;D
On second thought ... Maybe I should work on a game instead?

Yeah, I guess it really is a tad "default" ... good choice of words!  :)  Plus, it looks more like something, that would suit a hardrock-adventure-game-DJ-whatsoever better. What with the font and all ...

Hey there!

When I saw this post two days ago, I started doodling over it a bit, and somehow I came up with this. It's totally different, I know, and the content area is way too empty, but I thought, what the hell, I'll post it anyway. Maybe you can get something from it.

Anyway, I like the original design, too. A lighter orange maybe would work for me, instead of this retina-burning green and yellow.Ã,  ;)

See you around...

Yay! This makes me wanna dance. No really, this is pretty cool. The changes work great, and it would fit the scrolling end title just fine. Well, it would fit an introductory sequence, too. But I have to agree, that for a looped background theme, there is something not quite right. I couldn't tell, what it is, but I just came to compliment you on this, anyway.  :)

Holy cow, Seleceus, you did it. Great improvement on Jerry! Now, the only problem is, that he's constantly looking down (or up, if the pupils are changed). But I guess, that's the smallest problem. Thanks a lot!

As for the colour of their hair. I wanted to care about that later, when I had the basic bodies and all ... which should be sometime by tomorrow evening. I'm still away from my computer.  >:(

Anyways, thanks for everything. It's good to see, that some people are really interested in playing a game about nothing.  :D
